The two players I can think of who were somewhat  analogous were Nelson Cruz and David Ortiz.  Cruz got a four year deal that went through his age 37 season, but even though that contract was extremely successful, never got another contract that guaranteed multiple years.   Instead he got a one-year contract with a team option that was exercised, then two one-year contracts.   Ortiz at 36, after a .953 OPS season, still settled on a one-year deal.  Then, after a 1.026 OPS season, the Sox gave him a two-year deal.  When that was up, he was given a one-year deal with options.

Based on those players, I don’t see Abreu getting a three year deal through age 38.   But like I said, you never know.

What if? What if we had offered Cruz 7/100m when he was a free agent?

Ok. You have to explain why no Rizzo. Power hitting LH with GG defense at 1B. O's need a MoO bat. With Wallitimore a LH power bat is much preferred.

    With regard to Stripling:

    Stripling: ERA+ = 3.57, xFIP= 3.67, BABIP=.269, K/9 = 7.4, IP= 134.1, Age= will play all of 2023 at 33

    Burnes: ERA+ = 3.05 , xFIP= 2.85, BABIP= .292, K/9 = 11.7, IP= 202, Age= 28

How do you consider these two pitchers interchangeable? Burnes >>>>Stripling

No Rizzo because I believe he’s going to start breaking down. We need the LH power bat but a younger pre arb guy.

I don’t think the pitchers are interchangeable just cost to acquire. Burns is going to cost and Stripling is just cash.

Sign Martin Perez to a 4/$80M with a 5th year based on IP at $16M

Sign Anthony Rizzo to a 3/$70M

Trade Westburg/ Santander/DL Hall to Milwaukee for Corbin Burnes

I like a lot of this! Perez for 3 years and 2 option.

    No Rizzo

The trade for Burns works but we could just sign a guy like Stripling, then we could use our assets for another bat.

  4. At first I didn’t care if Judge got to 62. Now I hope he’s stuck on 61 for the season.

The crying by Yankees fans about how we didn’t groove one so Judge can have the record #%^%#. I’m counting down, 2 games left, I hope Texas walks him 8 times.

There is no 'intent to cheat' if it's not against the rules.  Athletes forever have been taking supplements of one kind or another to try to get an edge.  As long as it's legal and not against the rules then no problem.

When did steroids get banned? 2004-2005?

One thing I haven't really thought through or looked into is why homers seem more spread out among players now.  How is it that MLB had 2019 where the most homers per PA of all time happened, but one guy in the NL and nobody in the AL hit 50 homers?

You can speculate about steroids, but throughout history people have hit 50+ homers in seasons where there weren't half as many homers as today.  Jimmie Foxx, Hank Greenberg, Ruth, Foster, Mays, Hack Wilson, Mantle, Maris... but in the years where we saw the most homers ever by quite a ways Stanton, Judge, and Alonso were the only ones to clear 50 and Stanton is the only one to approach 60.

It has always been the ball. Steroids had nothing to do with hitting.

Change the ball and hits die, change the ball and they fly out the stadium.

It is a good point about the plate discipline. The question is, does that continue going forward or is this a one year thing?

I think it’s very likely his peak value is right now. His OPS appears to be headed in the direction of somewhere around 800.  He has a chance at 35 homers and 90+ RBIs.

That’s a very good year in a season where offense is down.

But his defense is also subpar and he doesn’t provide value on the bases either.

And, of course, the biggest asterisk next to his season is that he has been healthy. That never happens for him and its a tough thing to rely on.

This is also his age 27 season, so seeing him peak at the age when players historically peak isn’t exactly surprising.

The question is, what can you get for him? You don’t move him just to move him but you certainly do shop him.

What about Judge? Here’s a year when he finally stayed healthy and he’s putting up crazy numbers. But he’s 31 going into free agency, Santander’s 4 years younger.

I thought at first , he’s the one they trade, now I’m not so sure. At worst he’s a competent DH. At best he’s a borderline AS.
