Nothing from that game made me regret the trade.

It's been clear to me for awhile that DL Hall's best opportunity to shine and thrive in MLB is as a high leverage reliever.  Seems like he really doesn't want to go that route......and that's a shame.  I think Elias handled this situation pretty flawlessly.

Take away that home run and you still don't have a quality start. You still have a ton of traffic on the bases. You still don't have clean innings.

I would certainly never imply that my dream is that Irvin spends all of 2024 in the rotation.  He is definitely the weakest link right now.  But it's also true that the ump made it harder for him last night than necessary.

I know that you are not saying this as a definitive, but when I see people say Irvin is unlucky, my response is how? I know not everyone consumes the games the same say and some follow through, gamecast, boxscores, other type of statcast sources of info. But to those who watch him pitch, I struggle to see a reasonable conclusion drawn for his lack of success that can be explained as "unlucky".

From what my non-trained eye can detect, he simply does not possess the talent/stuff profile to be a very good starting pitching on a contending team. The velo being very low 90's, without a plus change, and he does not have good command. There are some ABs routinely where he just totally loses the strike zone.

I respect that he tried to redefine his pitch arsenal/repertoire in the offseason (as I always respect pros who continue to work on their craft). But he's just not that good. And the more times he goes through the lineup, it usually doesn't go well. He struggles to have clean innings and the bases are usually littered with traffic.

I respect that he had a short stretch last year of effective/decent starts. But IMO he is not a guy that I would want or believe should be starting on a playoff caliber team. Thankfully, he is only a "fill-in for now for us" and hopefully he will be gone soon. Maybe to the bullpen? But even that looks iffy because Akin is already occupying the role that he would have some use in.

One way he was unlucky last night was he struck out a guy (should have been the 3rd out of the inning) but the umpire blew the call and awarded a BB.   Next guy hit a 2 run homer.

You're right. He wore it after his dad.

    Actually....

Cal Sr returned to the team from 1989 to 1992 as the 3rd base coach.

I assume he wore #7 then?    So he would still be the last one.

  5. DeCosta had a presser on the draft today.  Said a bunch of stuff.

There is a 'strong chance' we take a RB.   Not that shocking.

Said there is a very deep pool of OL talent.

Any predictions for what we do with the 30th pick?

  6. Career .885 OPS vs RHP.   (580 PA)

Career .582 OPS vs LHP.   (213 PA)

That is a pretty striking differential.   Not saying he can't improve against lefties eventually and I'm NOT saying he should be a platoon player.

But idk...........maybe............just maybe.............. he shouldn't be leading off vs LHP right now?

    scouting report on the Pirates?

They are 6-1.  They beat up on the Nats and the Marlins.  Not sure how meaningful that sample size is.   Marlins are the last team in MLB with not a single win.

Jared Jones might be a problem (their SP that we are facing this afternoon).  He had 10 K's in his first start against the aforementioned pitiful Marlins.

Overall PIT is 6th in MLB in team OPS.   14th in team ERA.

The O's are his seventh team, why would he be nervous?

8th actually.  Wow.  I had no idea he had moved around so much.   Future Immaculate Grid legend.

    Actually.......................

Frazier is about to enter our building.   Currently hitting .333 with Kansas City.  ;)

  10. *pushes glasses up*

well technically the season started on March 20th.  ;)

I'm with you in general though that March does seem too early.  I don't want the WS creeping into November either though.  Probably the easiest answer would be to reduce the number of games in the regular season.............but is there any chance the owners would go for that?    Seems pretty unlikely to me.
