Current outfielders on the Norfolk roster:
Kjerstad: (1.156 OPS)
Daniel Johnson (.892)
Burdick ( .826 for the year)
And this doesn't include Stowers who we called up (but won't use yet) who had a .856.
Seems like we have options to reinforce the OF if we really want to.

Would like to see him get his walk rate down (he walked the bases loaded yesterday.......... has a career 4.2 BB / 9), but there's obviously still value in a guy who can get some K's and apparently allows pretty weak contact most of the time.
-
In the presser Hyde said that they thought the calf was good to go. So they activated him, then the next day he felt some discomfort again. Pretty odd / frustrating.
-
He just classified the knee issue as a bruise for Santander.
-
Hyde just commented on these things in the post game presser.
Apparently immediately after they activated Hays from the IL............he started feeling discomfort in his calf again. It is minor at the moment, and they are hoping he is good to go after the off day tomorrow. Hyde said Hays WOULD have started today if not for the calf flaring up. Sigh.
Santander banged his knee up a bit in the outfield. And apparently it was bothering him more after running the bases. So he took him out for O'Hearn.

Update. My algorithm on X just showed me a tweet with a "leaked" 2024 ravens schedule.
I can't vouch for it in any way. But it has us with 6 primetime games. (another Harbaugh bowl on Thanksgiving, which also happened in Jim's first year in San Fran).
I am slightly skeptical of the tweet ('tis why I'm not linking it here) but just thought it might be fun to stir the pot a bit until it drops for real.

So we have 4 guys that can play CF now?
That's kinda cool I guess.
-
We are likely to get another Thursday night game though right? I don't think this game counts as "Thursday Night Football."
Guess we won't have to speculate after Wednesday.

So anyone else dreading the season opener at Kansas City on Sep 5?
I wish I was more excited to see Lamar take on Mahomes again.
Maybe you guys can help me. The AFC Championship game was pretty close I guess........

What’s he doing playing for the Ironbirds?
Oops. Pretty big error on my part. I was looking at Ironbirds stats right before I checked Holliday. Fixed, thanks.

Update for last week.
In the Tides' last six games, Holliday hit .348 / .500 / .478
Overall he is hitting .264 / .435 / .396 since being demoted towards the end of April. More walks than K's.

I blame Jackson Holliday.
24 BB in 20 games so far in AAA. had 3 more today in game 21. He is ruining the data set!

I thought it was pretty egregious in the 12th inning when we were going for the game....Webb was pitching.
Nats had a runner on 2nd. I think 1 out.
Melanie inserted a comment like "What Webb really needs here is a double play ball."
ummmm. what.

I wish we had an elegant counting statistic to evaluate pitcher effectiveness that was better than wins. I don't really care about pitching wins--I mean, it's better to get them than not to--but I don't look at it at all to evaluate how good a pitcher is. Everyone knows what the problems with that statistic are.
At a minimum, we need a better "rule of thumb" for the HoF than 300 pitching wins, or we're going to have a hard time inducting starting pitchers.
QS isn't too bad.
It's certainly much better than "pitching wins."
Problem is that the game is evolving where fewer and fewer pitchers are going 6. But it's still relevant and the good ones can still do it.

I'm a bit more interested to hear if Roy thinks we don't have any shot tonight against the Nats.
But I'm not sure I want to see him answer on here. He probably should start another thread to be sure.

Ugggh! He didn’t ask who would do well. He asked who would be the best closer.
Based on the evidence of all the pitchers so far he is who I voted for.
I understand the question, thanks.

Means has yet to walk a batter! and is striking out over 10 per 9. Seems like he would do well.
-
I plan on bumping this thread about 1x per week to track how Holliday is progressing back in AAA.
Hopefully he will impress quickly and force his way back up here.
In his last week at AAA (6 games) he hit .227 / .433 / .364. No homers, 8 BB : 8 K.
Glad to see the BB:K ratio is getting back to where we expect it to be for him. Guess that's progress.

Yeah if someone offers us something valuable for McKenna I'm definitely listening. Sims has a WHIP over 1.6 though so idk if that is the particular reliever I would target......

Thanks Roy for continuing to do what you do.

I’ve been calling them frauds for 5 years and they’re my pick to finish last in the AL East.
I hope Tampa (and boston for that matter) make it a very close and competitive race.

Who did the scorer give the W too?
I'd vote Webb.
Looks like Akin got the win.

Cowser with the hat trick.

Kinda feel for this guy. 813 PA in AAA now at 23 years old. Hitting well but not enough to make you go wow I guess.
I hope someone throws him a nice party when he gets to 1,000 this year.

The saga of the sore calf continues. Poor Hays.
