I was ectatic when they traded for him in 96 or 97. Wow, I can't remember which year it was. I'm getting old haha.
They trade for him to get the 500 HR mark in Baltimore. I remember the nice banner on the warehouse.

Davis is white. If you never sat along the first-base line in Memorial Stadium you have no idea what Eddie had to put up with. Plenty of racist O's fans gave Frank a hard time, too, when he became manager (one couple I know refused to use their season tickets the entire time Frank was the manager). Racist behavior wasn't exclusive to Baltimore, I'm sure. But you just can't compare how Davis and Eddie are treated by fans without bringing up the obvious factor of skin color.
I never sat along the first-base line in Memorial Stadium but I was an Ed Murray fan and I never heard he was a "bad guy." I don't believe that Oriole fans of the 80's and 90's (except for a few nuts) would treat a player differently because of race.

An incredibly unnatural motion. It's a testament to the human body that it can even withstand it for any length of time.

He’s good, but he’s not $300M good.
Can Peter mortgage OPACY to sign him? -

Yeah, my ideal lineup at this point would be:
1. Nick Markakis RF
2. Steve Pearce LF
3. Nelson Cruz DH
4. Adam Jones CF
5. Manny Machado 3B
6. Chris Davis 1B
7. JJ Hardy SS
8. Jonathan Schoop 2B
9. Nick Hundley C
I keep Davis sixth just to break up the long parade of righties.
What a lineup. Sigh.

Oh Yeah.

The last time Brach blew a save on Friday night this team went into a tailspin.

I confess I was sure the Sox were going to choke again today, after yesterday's tease. They had bases loaded in the eight and the ninth and it came down to a two-out blooper by Abreu.

After a month and a half of putrid baseball, the Orioles are only 4 games out of first place. That's all you need to know about the 2017 AL East.
Someone may win this division with 85 wins.

Well, it seems that things are looking up a bit since the last time this thread was active.

You think Manny belongs with that group. I don't
Jury is still out. He has a lot of maturing to do, that's for sure.

Read The Book. Second and fourth tend to come up more often with runners on base. http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2009/3/17/795946/optimizing-your-lineup-by
That was a strange piece. I had never heard that your number-3 hitter is an afterthought as the writer says. It makes not sense, the #3 hitter is in the middle of all the action. I can buy the idea of batting your best hitter second only if you place a high-OBP hitter batting ninth, as a few teams do. Then you have essentially two lead-off hitters ahead of your #2 hitter. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense to me.

Pretty decent company.
I guess you have to hit a lot of bombs to be allowed to have that many sombreros. But still, no Bonds, Aaron, or Ruth (or Mays, Mantle, Murray, etc.) on that list.

I see, but that apparently has not registered with most MLB managers. Bonds batted third during his 70-HR season.

No your best two hitters bat second and 4th. Manny seemed to be more disciplined batting second.
I had also heard that your best hitter hits 3rd or 4th. Never 2nd.

Manny with the golden sombrero today. MLB career leaders in this stat:

Here is where Showalter is lacking again. There's no way Machado should be hitting third right now. He is pressing. Shifting him down in the lineup would allow him to relax a little. But Showalter won't do it. Remember when Jones was in a season-long slump one year and he refused to take him out of the cleanup spot?

Doesn't matter if Manny is hitting .300 or .185, Manny is going to hit Free Agency no matter what his numbers are.

I am not saying they are dumb. It's risk management. If the Orioles make a meaningful offer, do they pass it up and risk getting less one a half years from now? What if his numbers do not improve? What if he has knee problems again? The Orioles would be taking a risk too of course.
-
This would be the absolute perfect time to negotiate an extension. He might not like to negotiate right now, he might even be offended, but his value has taken a hit. If the Orioles make a meaningful offer, it might be hard for his camp to take the risk and pass up.

It was not too long ago that a 4-run Oriole lead in the eighth was game over.

The human element allows the MLB to manage the game by controlling the size of the strike zone to suite current perceptions about the game. E.g they want he umpires to stop calling the low strike so they can continue to raise the offensive numbers. Chicks still dig the long ball. Ca Ching!
I think we have a winner.

Davis's problem is not physical, he's no injured or old. It's completely mental. Recall Chuck Knoblauch, who suddenly lost the ability of playing second base (he couldn't throw to first)? This is the same kind of problem that Davis is facing as a hitter. Working with a good psychologist might fix it.
