  1. I think he might be breathing through his eyelids like the lava lizards of the Galapagos Islands. See, there are some lizards that have a parietal eye behind their heads so they can see backwards.

I think that's what is happening. It's the only thing that can explain it.

    1. So?  He has more than Manny did when he moved to Third.  He has a higher percentage of games there than Mateo has in CF.
    2. I don't recall any issues.  He did fumble one in Norfolk.
    3. The O's braintrust have put Mateo and O'Hearn in the outfield so far this season.  Is that valuing defense quite highly?
    4. Sure
    5. We can both name lots of highly regarded prospects that were in the majors as teenagers, and the folks promoting them were professional player development experts.
    6. Yea I would, particularly if the O's don't win the AL East.

    I figured you'd respond.

    1. Manny's is a poor comparison. Different management group. Completely different situation.

    2. Just because you didn't see any lapses doesn't mean their weren't any (see #5, you are not a professional and you do not have access to detailed info the O's player development folks have)

    3. Mateo and O'hearn are not highly regarded prospects who defensive prowess in the coming years is likely to effect the franchise.

    4. Thanks for the acknowledgement.

    5. Not sure what your point is here. Every prospect is different and every team has different criteria and assessment methods. Were the O's wrong to keep Gunnar down in 2022?

    6. Your choice. If he won the award in 2025 playing 2B I would say that validates the argument to keep him down.

  3. There are a number of inconvenient truths for the argument that ME is playing the service time game.

    1) Holliday does not have a large amount of time playing 2B which appears to be his likely position on the O's.

    2) Holliday was not particularly stellar defensively at 2B during spring training.

    3) The O's braintrust has gone on record stating that they value defense quite highly.

    4) Holliday barely had a cup of coffee in AAA in 2023. And ME has been consistently careful about "rushing" prospects through AAA.

    5) Holliday is 20 years old. Who on this board, with the possible exception of @Tony-OH, is a professional player development expert?

    6) Would any of us really be upset if he stayed down in AAA long enough to maintain his rookie status in 2025?

  4. @btdart20, lots of factors at play the last several days. Ragans and Detmers are quality LHP that any team would love to have. Sandoval ain't no slouch either. Also early in the season and not the best hitting weather in Baltimore. I think this is an epiphenomenon and not likely a trend. But worth watching, nonetheless.

Burnes has that *dawg* in him.  It was fun to watch him battle.  Excited for the next “Corbin Burnes day.”

Despite yesterday’s low strikeouts, his stuff was solid in terms of movement/spin and still got 13 swings & misses (btw more than his debut vs Angels of 12 and same number as Ragan’s last night)

But I thought he/McCann were getting too predictable in terms of pitch locations, and not as varied in quadrants.  Against, KC it seemed nearly everything to righties was low/away whereas against LAA he went up in the zone more with cutter and didnt try to spike the curveball below the zone all the time.  Here are the baseball-savant illustrators from these two games.

I wasn't at the game but watch both on TV. His stuff was much better against the Angels. My suspicion is that his FB was not there last night like it was against the Angels. You gotta dance with the girl you got.

As I said, this is a little bat sh!t crazy.

In a somewhat rhetorical manner, what is more batsh!t crazy? Stating your convictions with enthusiasm, or trying to convince someone who is batsh!t crazy that they are batsh!t crazy?

    I prefer King Theoden:

    Churchill, perhaps?

"We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I can say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalog of human crime. That is our policy."

  8. It's from Julius Caesar by Shakespeare. It's from a speech by Marc Antony and comes when Julius Caesar lies dead, having been assassinated by a group of conspiratorial senators in 44 BC. So perhaps there is some irony here given recent events with Orioles leadership.

    The full speech is:

O, pardon me, thou bleeding piece of earth,
That I am meek and gentle with these butchers!
Thou art the ruins of the noblest man
That ever lived in the tide of times.
Woe to the hand that shed this costly blood!
Over thy wounds now do I prophesy—
Which, like dumb mouths, do open their ruby lips
To beg the voice and utterance of my tongue—
A curse shall light upon the limbs of men.
Domestic fury and fierce civil strife
Shall cumber all the parts of Italy.
Blood and destruction shall be so in use,
    And dreadful objects so familiar,
That mothers shall but smile when they behold
Their infants quartered with the hands of war,
All pity choked with custom of fell deeds,
And Caesar’s spirit, ranging for revenge,
With Ate by his side come hot from hell,
Shall in these confines with a monarch’s voice
Cry “Havoc!” and let slip the dogs of war,
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.

Antony was part of the Second Triumvirate that hunted down Caesar's assassins and eventually ruled Rome as a dictatorship.

I hope that gives a bit of context.

  9. I'm pretty certain Adley would not be the first of our young players I would extend. It is unlikely that Elias operates like Alex Anthopoulos and signs all his young players to team friendly extensions that lock up the stellar talent his farm system is producing through their prime years. Unfortunate as that seems, unless Rubenstein is willing spend at a level not seen in Baltimore since the Albert Bell/Miguel Tejada days, I think you can hope for one or maybe two players extended. If that's the case, give me Gunnar and Jackson.

I'll take the demerit for being lazy and not checking.  That said, it's happened 8 times ever in the 75 years of the award.  I hope we can agree that 8 times out of 150 awards makes it pretty rare.

If I am doing the math correctly, that's about 5.3% or slightly more than 1:20. I'm not sure that qualifies as rare.

  11. There is huge pressure on Burnes to be El Jefe. He's in his last year before FA. He's the clear and absolute #1 on a playoff caliber team. He's supported by a bullpen with a number of significant ?s. He got a lot on his shoulders. I wish him health.

Let's see where Montgomery goes. Maybe he was waiting for Snell to set his market. He honestly makes sense for every one of the AL East teams, IMO. Boy I'd love to get him on the Snell deal but less AAV.

2/$56 with an opt out after 2024? He doesn't cost a draft pick.

Here is a question I have wondered for a while;  why don't Pitchers learn to throw an Eephus pitch?  It was effective for Laven Hernandez and Zack Grenke. It's now real hard on the arm.  It throws batters off at the plate.

If you combine the Eephus pitch with a high end fastball, it seems to me that this would be highly effective.  Just throw it a handful of times each game, giving the opposition hitters something else to think about

I think the effectiveness of a FB/CU combination is much more than just a significant difference in velocity. Most scouts will tell you that they are very interested in a number of issues with the execution of a CU. Does the release point mirror the fastball (tunneling)? Does the pitch have movement? Is the movement significantly different or opposite the predominant movement of the FB? There are a bunch more I could come up with.

The eephus is a novelty pitch because it is very slow. But it typically is not known for great movement. It is rather obvious when it is thrown (ie not tunneled). And it is not very easy to throw for a strike. If you play golf it's the difference in difficulty between chipping and hitting a perfect lob shot.

I hope that answers your question.
