Read Astroball last night.  I don't know that it makes me think that they were actually all that good at drafting. I mean biggest successes were drafting #1 or #2.  And they failed there as well.   Also seems they made mistakes on a lot of players they already had:

Keuchel:  Tried to trade him multiple times but no other team wanted him.   Worked on adding slider on his own.  Made himself better.  At first was against all the shifts but then he started moving players around himself depending on what he was throwing.

JD Martinez: Worked with someone in the off-season on his swing. Totally re-did his swing.  Then did really well in Winter Ball told the coaches and management about this and they didn't give him a chance in Spring Training only giving him 18 at bats and then told him they would be going forward with guys like Hoes instead and released him.  Their system said a guy his age would never improve.

Altuve:  Seems like Altuve they did help. But they weren't that high on him.

Biggest thing was Beltran. How he would watch videos of opposing pitchers over and over again until he could detect what they were throwing.  Then would give the information to his teammates.  Makes me wonder if someone like Bundy was showing his pitches.

If the Britton deal went through they most likely wouldn't have traded for Verlander.  So we did them a favor there.

Big thing the book taught me is that players who are great spend a lot of time on their own working constantly to improve themselves.  Watching Video and looking for weaknesses in their opponents.   Perhaps intelligence and competitiveness and ability to gel with teammates is underrated.  Correa had over 1200 SAT.

On Brady Aiken the team only offered 3.1 million as that was the minimum they could offer and still get another pick next year if the guy didn't sign.  Also the owner was the one who put the bid in for 5 million.

Big Data really doesn't seem to help that much when drafting high school players.

If I’m Manny or even AJ, I might have some words with Davis.

That would be good if they did. But what is worse--and quite probable--is that nothing is said, but rather they hold it in. That is the kind of thing that makes for a bad environment.

Why?  It's a sunk cost.  You have to pay it anyway.  You might as well have someone on the field who can actually play the game.

Sooner or later they will have to do it for the "morale" of the whole team. But you probably have to play him to ever hope to get a buy out. Now why Buck continues to insist on him being in the heart of the lineup, I have no idea. IF you asked Buck about last night he would probably say something like, "Look at what Manny did, that proves that I made the right move with Davis hitting behind him."

And honestly we should be holding Davis responsible for Mancini's negative WAR because Davis is the one forcing Trey out of position in LF.  Just disgraceful.

And Buck continuing to insist on not only playing Davis but batting him in the heart of the order is an abomination.  It's an absolute travesty and makes a mockery of the game of baseball.

I agree. But Christ needs to have the worst season in history in order to encourage him to take a buy out. BUT Buck does not need to bat him 4th.

Maybe they had someone better.  We have Vielma.  A .498 OPS in AAA.  I have no idea why we didn't sign Flaherty and I have no idea why forum members were against signing him.

The issue is not necessarily not resigning Flash, but having absolutely no other depth. Clearly we should have had a lefty bat with a good glove ready in case Beckham stunk.

    I’m bullish on Mancini.

Still think his approach lends more to a high BA/decent OBP and moderate power output. Nothing wrong with .290, .350 and 20 HR though.

We need more hitters like that and less all or nothing guys.

Yes, I only wish we knew he could hit before we signed Davis. I mean, Trey showed no signs in the minors that he could hit. This has been totally unexpected.

I'll forever be befuddled that 1: many (at least some that will still admit) that they are surprised at how bad he is , and 2: that the O's offered this contract simply because:

    1. He hit .196 in 2014

    2. He had ADHD issues and used a stimulant to control those while also being addicted to chewing tobacco, how did that not raise red flags with the medical department, or do they just screen pitchers?

Exactly, and clearly he is not right mentally or physiologically. The issue is not a physical one, but internal. Whoever is responsible for this contract should not be employed next year.

I just don't understand what in the world has happened.  He was never great, but he's turned into an automatic out at a still relatively young age.

I'm hearing he may have tore his ACL breaking the bat last night...

The time to deal with it is now. Continuing to "hope" he figures it out is demoralizing to the team. You cannot look at any part of his game and say... yeah.... that's something we can work with.

Being a good GM/Manager means making the tough call. As I mentioned before... you need to talk to him, send him down and get back to basics...but to continue this any longer is an error of epic proportions. Especially if it means by keeping him that you make a decision to lose someone who is producing....

I totally agree. You can't let one guy's issues destroy an entire season. If they handle it properly, it could not only help Chris, but the entire team. It will demoralize the team if it continues. This will have to be an organizational decision, not merely a managerial or GM one. One can only wonder what type of trouble this is causing in Chris' personal life as well.

Don't worry. It's only 4 more years (after this one).

He'll get better than this for stretches...but this is going to be brutal to watch.

I'm not so sure about this. In one at bat he watched three meatballs right down the middle. Then in his last at bat, he was bent on bunting. But you could read his body language. He is mentally lost. Something is going on in his mind. It is crazy. Can you DL for mental "injuries"?

A month from now people will be reading way too much into early results and that will be with an additional month of data.

Yeah really. The O's will be 15 games under 500 and people will talk about how it was bc of an awful April schedule.
