  1. Can you describe what happened? In any event, 2 for 4 with a double today, on an 8 game hitting streak and hitting .373/.466/.412. Currently 7th in MLB in OBP and 11th in BA.
  2. And I didn't think you were suggesting you wanted to see him struggle. I just thought you were suggesting that Urrutia could do as well as Markakis considering his .028 ISO. Chalk it up to me being slow on the uptake.
  3. I didn't think it was so obvious that you were jesting, since Nick has been oft-criticized the last few years for his declining power, and not without justification. My man crush is not so strong that I can't see that his declining power is an issue.
  4. I think you'll accept an .028 ISO from a guy with a .479 OBP. Nick's lack of XBH does bear watching, but I doubt Atlanta is complaining about his performance so far.
  5. Well, I have the power of suggestion, anyway....
  6. I think it's time to remove the words "neck surgery" from the thread title. From here on out this thread will just be following how well he plays. Nick seems to be playing his usual game early in the season. After last night's great performance he's hitting .353 with a .436 OBP. He's only had one extra base hit all season, however. That's low even by Nick's 2013-14 standards, and bears watching.
  7. I'd say Nick was in our top three in 2012 (.834 OPS). Not the last two years. He was a little better in 2014 than some people give him credit for. I did like to have Nick up there in situations when making contact was extremely important and strikeouts were a particularly bad outcome, such as runner on 3B, less than two outs. I always felt confident Nick would have a good at bat in those situations. Overall, you really can't argue that he was even close to as good as Pearce, Cruz or Jones last year. It's time to move on. I'm rooting for Nick to have a good season, and for his sake, I hope the Braves are better than expected. It could be a long year for them.
  8. Two RBI for Nick in his Braves debut today.
  9. Nick had an 11-pitch at bat, then two hits, against the Orioles last night. Saved his best for his old team.
  10. Hard to know if he's hitting in bad luck, or just not hitting the ball with authority. He has only struck out twice. In any event, he's healthy enough to be out there.
  11. Markakis played his first game in the field today -- and threw a runner out at home plate. I promise, I'm not going to document every game he plays this spring. But his first game this spring, and now his first game in the field, seemed notable enough to mention. I probably won't post here again until the Braves determine whether Markakis will be on the roster for Opening Day -- which seems pretty likely at this point.
  12. This amused me: http://www.ajc.com/news/sports/baseball/markakis-goes-2-for-3-in-long-awaited-braves-sprin/nkc73/
  13. I wouldn't draw that conclusion based on one spring training game. But 2 for 3 beats 0 for 3, and Nick's track record is that it takes a lot to keep him off the field.
  14. Agreed, that's where it belongs now.
  15. And went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored. Nice to see.
  16. Nick finished the day 2 for 3. I'm glad to see that he's back on the field and making good contact with the baseball. I wish I could say the same for Matt Wieters.
  17. I think the Braves are even bigger underdogs than the Orioles in the eyes of the oddsmakers and projectionists. But that's why they play the games.
  18. Seems unlikely they'd have him travel if he wasn't starting.
  19. No idea. But they're certainly talking as if Opening Day is realistic.
  20. Markakis took batting practice yesterday.
  21. Nick is expected to be cleared for full baseball activities in two days or so, and the Braves are still hoping he'll be ready for Opening Day. http://tomahawktake.com/2015/03/18/nick-markakis-returning-to-atlanta-braves-in-2-3-days/
  22. Nick is throwing and hitting off a tee, and expects to start playing spring training games in about two weeks. http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/03/07/nick-markakis-is-making-progress-from-neck-surgery/ http://m.braves.mlb.com/news/article/111629492/braves-nick-markakis-markakis-two-weeks-away-from-playing-in-grapefruit-league-games

  24. There was a "sour period" that began when Eddie was on the DL (for the first time in his career) in 1986, and ran through when he was traded after the 1988 season. The short version is, Eddie was unfairly criticized by the owner and some fans turned on him, and he began to sulk. Most fans were still in his corner, but those who weren't were quite vocal. It was a bad situation and the Orioles really needed to trade Eddie to resolve it. I think it is fair to say it was partially Eddie's fault. But time healed that wound and when he returned to the team in mid-1996 and played a key role in helping the Orioles to make the playoffs for the first time in 13 years, all was forgiven.
