  1. Neither of them are going to approach their career averages. At all. So my point is that sometimes when you have a good year, you just have a good year. Same if you're having a bad year.

Snider is .006 away from his career BA, and is actually OBPing better than his career numbers. How is that not approaching his career numbers? You don't think he could muster a .710 OPS for the rest of the year?

Just because a guy is having a great year doesn't mean the entire year will be great. He could still have a good line at the end of the year while not living up to the .880 OPS he's had so far.

  2. Greinke's scoreless streak ended today at 45.2 IP.

And I was there to see it end. Great pitching today from DeGrom and Greinke, but of course it came down to the bullpen.

  3. If the term was offensive then why would they have issued them to begin with?

Because white people of the past weren't terrible concerned with what other races considered offensive?

Fighting Irish was originally derogatory and that is a team name.

Well then let's get rid of it. If a significant group of Irish Americans starts a campaign to get rid of it then why not? Why is a sports team name so important?

  4. This is spot in, so far as I can tell. The bar (from a trademark standard) is whether the term is "disparaging". It wouldn't (and shouldn't) matter if a member of the aggrieved group owned the team or business.

I don't think it should matter either, but I'm saying that's why there generally isn't a ton of outrage at the use of "redneck"... most of the people using that word on television probably identify with it.

Also, there's the pesky fact (that I know won't go over well with some of you) that whites in America have never been subjugated the way blacks or Native Americans have. Those slurs have more power because of it.

  5. Why does it have to be racial all of a sudden?

Are you one of those guys that don't mind ethnic slurs?

There are a ton of "reality" shows in the last few years with Hillbilly and Redneck in the title. Probably Cracker as well.

And every show with the term "Redneck" in the title is generally embraced by the very people considered "rednecks" and produced by other white people. You ever hear the song "Redneck Woman"?

If this team was owned and operated by Native Americans, maybe this wouldn't be as big of a deal.

  6. Shouldn't you be trying to enlighten your friends? If you are OK with them possibly offending any Irish in earshot you should be OK with the idea of Native Americans getting offended.

I'm not OK with it but I can't change everyone. This isn't a person - it's a team that represents the capital of the United States.

As for Cable, all those shows are trademarked right?

I can't think of a show with a derogatory title, but enlighten me if you can. I'm not being sarcastic either - what TV shows contain a racial slur in the title?

If you are going down this path you need to go ALL THE WAY. Be consistent.

This coming from the guy who wouldn't call a Native American a "Redskin" to his face. If you think it's a perfectly acceptable term, be consistent.

  7. It is still an archaic pejorative term that has been "cleansed" by being used in a positive instead of a negative context.

And I find it hard to believe you don't have any friends or relatives that use the term.

Or terms like "Hillbilly" and "redneck" which are of course pejorative but all over cable television.

I'm sure I do have friends and relatives that use that term. I'm OK with the fact that some of my friends and relatives are ignorant. That's reality.

Also my standard for NFL team name isn't based on what they are allowed to say on cable television. It's a team that represents the capital of our country and I find a race based pejorative to be inappropriate. Whether or not you think it's "archaic" doesn't mean much to me... it's a racially charged term, regardless. I wouldn't be cool with a team called the Rednecks or the Paddys, either.

Also, I guess I'm missing all of the "positive" uses of "redskin" outside of football.

  8. We are talking about a name for a Football team. Your point is meaningless.

So if there was a team called the Miami Wetbacks, that would be cool right? It's just a football team, not a reference to race, right?

When you hear the term Redskins you think about the football team. Not Indians per say.

Maybe that would make sense if the logo wasn't an actual picture of a Native American.

You seem to be easily offended

And you seem happily ignorant. Congrats.

  9. Sure, if we were discussing the football team.. I don't see what the big deal is.. Are you an Indian?

No, I'm not talking about the football team. Would you call a Native American a redskin to his face? I'm talking about in reference to his race.

I can call a white guy "white" and I can call a black guy "black" but somehow I doubt you would call a Native American a "redskin."

And my race is irrelevant - I don't need to be black to be offended by the N word.

  10. Yes, why is that a bad idea? Because securing our borders, the economy and foreign affairs don't tug at emotional heart strings and are therefore unexciting? Those things should be the priority rather than this.

We can take care of multiple things at once. Believe it or not, this patent case isn't taking anything away from national defense. Should the court turn down cases because all of our other more important problems aren't solved yet? That's nonsense.
