  1. Was watching some YouTube WS compilations from 69-71.  I was taken by surprise as to how much sloppy fielding there was for the O's and their opponents. Several balls to the outfield were muffed when trying to glove the ball, or take it out of the glove. Happened more times in each WS condensed games I watched then I have seen it happen the entire 2023 season. And really can't ever remember it happening more often in my lifetime.

Well when I compare how much he contributed to how much I thought he would contribute maybe he deserves consideration.  Did any Oriole have more big hits than Frazier?  I know his glove was another not so valuable thing.

But the few times he he made a remarkable (for him perhaps) defensive play were critical moments.

The interesting thing about Gibson is that he was credited with 15 wins, but the team was “only” 19-13 when he started.  The other starters:

    Bradish (12 wins): 19-10

    Kremer (12 wins): 23-8

    Rodriguez (7 wins): 14-9

    Wells (7 wins): 11-9

    Irvin (1 win): 8-4

    Flaherty (1 win): 3-4

    Means (1 win): 2-1

The other “starter loss” went to Akin in a bullpen game.

That seals it then, Kremer for MVO. 😁

Voted Adley too, only because the O's dont have another Catcher that provides the offense he brings. The O's have depth at SS and 3B even though Gunnar's still had a great year.

I also voted Adley, but primarily because I think he is the leader (the glue) of the club. All production has a contribution from him in it somewhere. Leading by example etc.

A ton of options.  We're not heavily dependent on a handful of guys.

Adley is the bedrock.  So much of the team is built on his foundation (OBP, XBH, pitching, defense, relational skills...).  Can't go wrong picking Adley.

Gunnar's brilliance had been building all season.  He's been as advertised.  And better defensively.  Can't go wrong here either.

Grayson's development has been very important for the second half.  Not quite the threshold for the year, but maybe the playoffs.

A ton of offensive role players who have had big/key moments (Santander, O'Hearn, Mullins, Mountcastle, Hays, Hicks, Frazier) and crucial depth/match-ups.  Pitching has had a few big moments from Cano, Wells, Gibson, and Kremer too.

Bautista was the final nail for the 1-run wins.  There's a strong case to be made that he's the best at his position across the league.  Maybe I'm misremembering, but I don't think any of our other players have as strong of a case (some in the conversation).

But I went with Bradish.  He's been a consistent TOR all season.  Top 3 in ERA is as valuable as it can get.

This! There are  likely around 8 players who without their contributions, accounts for +/- 5 games in the standings.

This is a great point actually. We were 1-5 against the Tigers in 2014 before the playoffs. Would be interesting to see data on this.

I remember one year the phillies played the dodgers for the NLDS and LA had like a 12-1 record against them in the regular season. Philly disposed of them.

Losing sole possession of the division lead (at home on a night when one of your most celebrated players of the last 30 years is retiring) is not a good thing no matter how it’s spun.

The Rays are eating the O’s lunch.

The Rays are a better team than we are. Always have been. Just haven't always played like it.

I just learned from my roommate that NFL ticket costs $400/year.  Sad that MLB can't come up with a similar product, while the NFL rakes in billions.  Only 2.5 million people would have to sign up for a billion in revenue.  Most teams, w/ the O's being prime examples can't see past the end of their nose.

As others have pointed out, it's the RSNs which are stopping in market streaming, not MLB.

I signed up for this (NFL+)  a few hours before the Thursday night game. When the game started the stream wouldn't load, then I found out NFL doesn't even provide phone support for this product. I had to search through the help to find possible solutions and then decided screw this.. I asked for a refund the same night. Amazing the rich NFL can't provide phone support for their own product. MLB has it all over the NFL in this area. BTW I still watch the games (free) using what's available on the internet.

Does the Ump Scorecard site reflect the % of times managers win their challenges, expressing a missed call?

A quick Google search found several references and all of them expressed more than half of calls are overturned by replay. Here is an article from last year.

    https://apnews.com/article/mlb-sports-baseball-new-york-mets-6a15037c46e08d216299871f7093a42d#:~:text=Including crew chief reviews there,was 1 minute%2C 31 seconds.

How does the umpires union support their existence with such an awful record?

Not surprising that the analysis concludes that Colorado benefitted from Bellino's calls.  There was one big call that went the O's way that isn't well-captured by this methodology, though--the ball called on the first pitch to Mullins in the 8th.  It was an obvious strike, and the bad call rattled the Colorado pitcher, who then walked Mullins on 4 pitches and threw a cookie to O'Hearn on the first pitch.

It seems like Blach understood Bellino's strike zone and took advantage of it much better than the O's pitchers did yesterday.

I'm wondering how long it will be before someone tells Palmer to tone it down.

When I was in CT, I got blacked out of all MLBTV games against NYY and BOS. With the schedule at the time, that meant I missed 38 games a season. I tried all sorts of VPN apps on my Fire Stick, but none of them consistently worked. The only thing that worked every time was the VPN that Norton 360 included in their software suite. Had to watch those games on my laptop but it was a workaround.

In my new married life, I live in MA so I don't get blacked out of NYY games, and we have NESN in our cable package.

There are other ways to watch the games... when you are forced to look outside the required norm.. there are options

I cut the cord last year and have been watching O’s games via my MLB.TV subscription with a VPN (I have Express VPN) as needed since then.  I haven’t had any issues watching games up until the first game of the Astros series a couple weeks ago, and ever since then, I have been unable to get the games, regardless of home/away or with the VPN turned on or off.  I have tried troubleshooting with Express VPN and everything is working fine, so I reached out to MLB.TV customer service and they said that the O’s games are blacked out in my zip code (I live in Baltimore County) and even a VPN would not solve the problem.

I’m curious if any of you have been having the same issue that I have, should you be using the same MLB.TV/VPN system?  I’m really pissed because not only am I no longer able to watch the games (of course it had to happen in an amazing season like this), but I’m wasting money on the MLB.TV subscription and the VPN, which is the sole reason why I purchased both in the first place after deciding to cut the cord.  Does anyone have any recommendations on how to combat this issue?

I use a different product and don't have issues if I connect to IP's that are not proxied, they are direct. On my system they appear differently in the icon for the various sites.

The O’s have a .701 OPS vs. NL teams and are averaging 4.18 runs per game.  They have done considerably better vs. AL teams.  You can find this on the BB-ref team batting splits page.  Scroll down and click on “Show Opponent” and then “interleague play” is shown at the top.

While it’s true that the O’s have not hit very well against NL teams, i think it’s one of those fluky things that happen in a baseball season.  It’s not like NL teams have magical powers.  The AL as a whole averages 4.50 runs/game against the NL.

Thank you! One of the items I think has kept the O's at the top is the BA with runners in scoring position (couldn't see that stat there). Even if this was considerably lower it still underscores your point that it isn't some NL magic.. just is what it is.  But a team BA of .240 is definitely under-performing.

When Cole Irvin gives you 5.2 and only gives up 4 runs, you gotta win that game. This would be a very bad time to go into a slump. Someone has to step up besides Gunnar and O'Hearn. Gut check time.

It's my feeling we don't have very good offensive numbers against the NL and while I tried to find our Interleague hitting stats as a team to back that up  it seems almost purposeful that stat sites either don't keep this information or don't want you to know it.

So, being me, I had to test this a little.  I looked at every team that finished under .400 from 2013-22, except for the shortened 2020 season.  There were 26 such teams.  I compared how they did in the first 108 games (2/3 of the season) with the final 54 (1/3).

Of the 26 teams, 17 did worse in the final third than they’d done in the previous two thirds, 7 teams did better, 2 did exactly the same.  On average, the teams were 2.1 games worse than “expected” based on the record at the two-thirds mark.  That’s a drop in winning percentage of about .040 in the final third.

So, I’d say the effect exists, but it’s not huge.

The worst discrepancy was the 2017 Tigers, who were 51-57 at the two-thirds mark, but went 13-40 the rest in the way, 12.5 games worse than “expected.”  The biggest gainer was the 2018 Royals, who were 34-74 at the two-thirds mark, but went 24-30 in the final third, allowing the Orioles to fall below them and get the first pick in the draft.

You'd probably have to dig deeper and see if the 17 teams that did worse were more active in moving players than the other 9 before drawing a conclusion.

Timeline wise I have to think Hyde this afternoon saying "tough to see him get news" overtakes any teammate hopeful "he felt better after the game" kind of quote from last night.

The news could have been that he's being shut down.. which wouldn't play either way...

I just wanted to put down some markers for where our bullpen stood prior to Bautista’s injury (including last night for this purpose).

The pen had a 3.55 ERA and had thrown 3.56 innings per game. The team had 67 save opportunities and saved 41, a 61% rate.  Bautista had 33 saves in 39 chances.  The pen had an outstanding 35-16 record.

We’ll see how it goes from here.

It would be nice to know how those stats compare with the top 5 teams in pitching..

  18. Seeing a lot of gloom and doom here... did everyone miss this comment in Roch's post on MASN or has there been an update?

A teammate said later that Bautista felt much better after the game. The pain in the elbow/biceps area was momentary, just on the one pitch, but alarming.

A shutdown period was expected at the least.

  19. I agree with Angelos' sentiments (perhaps reading between the lines) that the O's cannot compete with the open market to sign a long term deal with any Free Agent player, ours included. However, I think his comments were unnecessary, have no purpose,  and perhaps are damaging to the team morale.  If we are going to keep anyone, it will need to be the Tampa model, sign the player years ahead of free agency.  If he is saying we can't do that, he isn't clear in his meaning, then certainly he is a liar.  In the end, as long as they own the team, what we can afford will always be decided by them, not any market comparisons.  Having success with a cheap team will only solidify their position.
