  1. OK folks, first month in the books and I had the itch to take a peek at stats through May 2 of the last two years respectively.   Well it’s startling!

    2023 Mateo:

    76AB 6HR 18 RBI 10SB 6BB 14K .338/384/.636/1.020

    2024 Cowser:

    83AB 6HR 18RBI 3SB 9BB 33K .277/.351/.578/.929

And of course as Jim Palmer responded to Kevin Brown “he (Cowser) needs to hit the cutoff man!”.   When Hays returns do the cow costumes start showing up at Goodwill?  I guess there is talk of a “cow pasture” section at the May 13 Toronto game.  Will Cowser be above .250 in 10 days?   I appreciate Cowser as a player and seems like an excellent teammate and person but I’m afraid the hype maybe getting in front of the train.  (inadvertent reference to cow catcher on a train).

  2. With Elias and Rubenstein across the negotiating table Boras will know he is up against experts in talent evaluation and financial risk evaluation respectively.  This won’t be Buck circumventing Dan to convince Peter to pay his “big hairy guy” Chris Davis.  Parameters will be established and plan B’s will be in place to implement should Elias and Rubenstein choose to walk away from the table.  That being said discussions with Henderson should be the priority play with the Rutschman discussions happening concurrently but at a slower roll.   I don’t think you want Rutschman finding out that Henderson has been approached by the O’s first.

Westburg shouldn’t be, where are you seeing that?

Yeah, that’s why I used the term “apparently”,  on the broadcast the other day (can’t remember if it was radio or tv) the quote was Westburg “is still considered a rookie”.  I was surprised myself.

He'd be in the running for unanimous MVP.  Mike Trout in 2012 is the only rookie to ever have gotten to 10 rWAR, and he didn't win the MVP only becuase a bunch of writers got all weak-kneed about Cabrera's triple crown. 2nd in all time rookie WAR is Dick Allen's 8.8 in '64, followed by Judge's 8.0 in '17.

Fred Lynn won the MVP and ROY in '75 with a 7.4-win season.

So since Westburg is apparently still ROY eligible, Cowser and Westburg may project to be the best rookie combination since Fred Lynn and Jim Rice in 1975?

  5. Two nights after the walkoff HR, the successful sacrifice bunt moving Mountcastle to 3rd and Mullins to 2nd was clutch.  All the while Kevin Brown was commenting how few times in MLB and Milb he’s been asked to sacrifice!

  6. What is really crazy is that Fuji will cost $7.035M to the Mets since they are in luxury tax territory!   That’s crazy.   Are there no Spenser Watkins, Thomas Eshelman or Caesar Valdez types available to them?

Burnes has confirmed he is testing the market unless he gets totally blown away. I don't think it's likely we extend him. But that's ok!

I realize what Burnes said last summer but my statement speaks more to the future relationships established between our ownership, our front office and his agent.

FWIW: Burnes already updated his X profile to Orioles as employer and Baltimore as his location.  Means nothing but feels good.

Some comments from Roch this morning:

"Hello everyone. I'm loving this comment total! Let's break the internet. Or at least disqus, which only requires one hard keystroke.
I just put in for a week's vacation. Returning next Friday. Bold, I know. Just need to get away. Not from you all, of course. You know what I'm talking about. But I'll share some news in the comments as it comes, even if I'm not writing an article. Like if they finally announce spring training invites or minor league staffs."

"I always said it would have to happen organically, or whatever. Wasn't just gonna take the day off for no reason. Boy, did I have a reason. It'll all be in the book one day. Or the podcast if I move on :-)"

    "Just staying home and decompressing."

So there is definitely more behind-the-scenes drama going on than what we are seeing openly.

I introduced myself to Roch at Sarasota back in 2011 after he came off an on field post game presser with Buck.  He was friendly and actually seemed to recognize the screen name I used over there at the time.  I didn’t survive his move to the Discus server.   Then the guys with the whole “First” thing kinda felt like going into McDonalds at 7AM and realizing you’ve sat down in some old guys’ regular spot.  Kind of stopped following as time passed.
I think it was coming out of COVID that the O’s/MASN were being cheap and didn’t set him up to go to Sarasota so he took it upon himself to make his own arrangements to at least get down there for a period of time.  Basically shamed the organization to let him go down there to cover the whole camp.
Wouldn’t surprise me if JA told accounting to stop paying bills until some aspects of the sale were finalized and Roch was being jerked around on spring training yet again.

  9. Since non-Orioles have already been brought into the thread, I distinctly remember sportswriters and announcers complimenting Baltimore native Al Kaline when I was a lad.   I see that Brooks thought highly of him as well.   From Kaline’s HOF biography is a quote from Brooks….
“There have been a lot of great defensive players.  The fella who could do everything is Al Kaline.  He was just the epitome of what a great outfielder is all about - great speed, catches the ball and throws the ball well.”

    From the Athletic:

“Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer has filed a civil suit against a former friend in Superior Court in Orange County, Calif., alleging that he lost nearly $1 million in a fraudulent business scheme.”

Sorry for Jim, but reading this first paragraph I was afraid Doug DeCinces would be the next name dropped.  Thankfully not so.

  11. So Frankie Montas just got 15-16M for one year from the Reds.  He pitched MLB inning in 2023 after having “labrum cleanup” surgery last February.  Basically broke down in 2022 and the Yankees got his crash landing after the trade deadline.

Wow, Means FA will most likely be out of our price range should he be fairly productive this coming season.

There are some objective data behind their assessment. Here is their assessment of likely WAR given " projected playing time, NOT the current status of a team's roster." If you go to the link below you can see their individual WAR predictions.

    https://www.fangraphs.com/depthcharts.aspx?position=ALL&teamid=2

Team        Position Player WAR    Pitching WAR   Total WAR

    Braves 34.0 19.4 53.4
    Dodgers 30.6 20.0 50.6
    Astros 31.1 16.3 47.3
    Yankees 32.5 14.7 47.2
    Blue Jays 27.0 16.3 43.3
    Rays 28.0 15.0 43.0
    Phillies 21.9 20.8 42.7
    Cardinals 26.0 15.9 41.9
    Twins 24.2 17.5 41.7
    Orioles 27.2 12.7 39.9
    Mariners 23.1 16.3 39.4
    Rangers 26.4 12.9 39.3

    Thanks for the link!

Well they certainly expect Holliday to arrive to the tune of 546 plate appearances, but regression from Hays & Santander while basically projecting Cowser as a washout and Means only throwing 135 innings is certainly concerning.

  13. Great family Thanksgiving activity!  Dad still can hammer.  Oh and they referred to the indoor sport court as within “the Holliday compound”…. Jackson won’t be signing any 8/80 extension.

  14. Here’s the link at Diamondbacks’ site which answers a number of FAQ’s that have been popping up in this thread.  https://www.mlb.com/dbacks/tickets/packs/ballpark-season-pass
It’s highly dependent upon the purchaser being “ App savvy”.   Availability is limited but certainly seems like a great holiday season sales tool.   Can even coordinate with others who have bought the package to “sit with friends” at individual games.   Here’s the thing, until just before each individual series starts you will not know where the seats you will be offered are located.   You may be offered “upgrade options” however.  I would imagine those upgrades will be dynamically priced for highly popular games.   I for one don’t see the traditional season ticket holder with seats they are accustomed to switching to something like this.   You want your good familiar seat for the big games not random assignments that you need to act upon prior to each series.   It is a great promotion concept though.

  15. At this point I would trade Cowser because if you traded Urias for a middle reliever,  I’m confident Westburg could fill Urias’ role.  That also allows you to start Ortiz everyday at your position of choice to see what he brings.

  16. Britt isn’t selling me a subscription by using the headline “ Zack Britton, former Yankee, Oriole All-Star reliever, retires“.  Would expect that from Buster but Britt? 😡

Seven + yrs with O’s 4 + yrs with NYY.
