That (and the other two fine Electric 6 songs on that record) are on my workout iPod as we speak. Danger!!!!!!
-
Just the comment that (even now) I can still play Purple Haze. Great jam.
Well, duh. Showed a friend Voodoo Chile the other day. Some things never leave your fingers.
-
Purple Haze- Jimi Hendrix great song.
Oh, great - now we get 20 more pages of scOtt posts!

All Girl Summer Fun Band. Greatest band name I've heard in ages. And they sound exactly like you'd think they would.
-
Drek, I searched for the Detroit Cobras version and couldn't find it, but did find this vintage Flirtations video
Here you go, eMusic subscribers.
-
Do you know that Flirtations song, Drek? It's brilliant.
I did not. Quality tune. Heard the Detroit Cobras version?

Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark - Dazzle Ships
With or without irony? Not a judgement, btw; just curious. There's certain acts one can listen to with or without. T Rex is my personal favorite for that one.

This release has some of the same tracks as above. Far and away the best version of "Respect" ever recorded.
I believe they're actually different shows. Live in Europe is a fine record, no doubt.
Oh, and I think I need the Walk Hard soundtrack.

Otis Redding. This archival release. Only made it through the London show (which is supposed to be the lesser concert) and the version of Try a Little Tenderness may just be the greatest thing I've ever heard. Ever start tearing up from a piece of music? Yeah, that. They just keep calling him back onstage, and the music builds and builds, and at some point Sam and Dave start singing too...wow.
Motown? Feh.

"On And On And On"
I was at a party and this fella said to me
"Something bad is happening, I'm sure you do agree
People care for nothing, no respect for human rights
Evil times are coming, we are in for darker nights"
I said, "Who are you to talk about impending doom?"
He got kinda wary as he looked around the room
He said, "I'm a minister, a big shot in the state"
I said, "I just can't believe it, boy I think it's great
Brother can you tell me what is right and what is wrong?"
He said, "Keep on rocking baby, 'til the night is gone"
On and on and on
Keep on rocking baby
'Til the night is gone
On and on and on
'Til the night is gone
On and on and on
Keep on rocking baby
'Til the night is gone
On and on and on
'Til the night is gone
Over in the corner I could see this other guy
He was kinda flirty, he was giving me the eye
So I took advantage of the fact that I'm a star
Shook my hair and took a casual stroll up to the bar
And as sure as hell this guy was coming up to me
He said, "Who am I and who are you and who are we?
What's our situation, do we have some time for us?"
I said I was not exactly waiting for the bus
He said, "If you're going somewhere can I come along?"
I said, "Keep on rocking baby, 'til the night is gone"
On and on and on
Keep on rocking baby
'Til the night is gone
On and on and on
'Til the night is gone
On and on and on
Keep on rocking baby
'Til the night is gone
On and on and on
'Til the night is gone
[Extra Video Verse]
Standing up is scary if you think you're gonna fall
Like a Humpty Dumpty, 'fraid of falling off the wall
I say if you ever want to know what's going on
Gotta keep on rockin baby till the night is gone
The wonder and glory of ABBA.

The soothing, comforting mediocrity of Paul Weller's solo work.

Is what I'm talkin' 'bout! Sista shoutin' down THE MAN!
And NO! NOT scOtt only posts here! This is a free forum. I have some crazy good links, but anyone can post here. Malike has. Anyone else want to? Anything is very welcome! Cool live set. Something we all haven't seen. Post something cool!
The OH is a forum; this here is scOtt's thread. Post at your peril.
-
haha scott is this like 25 pages worth of posts by only you?
Sorry, only scOtt posts allowed here.
Listening to Nina Simone right now, btw.
-
AC/DC radio on XM. Yeah, they're probably gonna be bad on the new tour. And I doubt the record will even be The Razor's Edge, let alone Back in Black. But I love em more every year.

Is that the place with the fancy bread?
No, it's the supercontinent!!!

Hey, between Neutral Milk Hotel and The Hold Steady, I'm slowly breaking out of my Taking Back Sunday, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance tastes. Not that I dislike them now. But I'm opening up to new music. It's an enlightening experience.
You're not going to get me to dislike Coheed and Cambria, Thursday, or Muse, though. How dare you even consider it.
Are you sure? Outside of Muse, that's really a lot of crappy bands. And remember, I grew up in the 80's. I know from crappy bands.
-
You missed an opportunity to take a shot at me. Are you feeling okay?
Honestly, when I get more time, I want to delve into a lot of these bands that you all mention in such high esteem. Maybe I'll start a suggestion thread when I'm ready.
Ah, you sounded so happy about your new musical discovery, I couldn't smack you around. Maybe another time.
-
For me, for fear of embarassing myself with some of my musical preferences, the CD that probably comes the closest to that was Full Collapse by Thursday. I loved the first song on the CD, but loathed the rest of the album. Slowly, I started to focus more on the music being played and came around to some of the (admittedly heavy-handed and disjointed) lyrics. It's one of my favorite CDs, even if it too quickly gets thrown into the catch-all "emo" genre. Understanding (In A Car Crash) still reigns as my favorite song. If that's an indictment of my musical taste, so be it.
There are other albums that definitely fall into this category... and bands as well. You all saw how much work it was for me to actually hold an appreciation for The Hold Steady. I like them plenty now, and have most of their albums I downloaded in my rotation.
You know, it took me a while to get into the New Pornographers, as I was expecting something harder to get into. They are, of course, wonderfully hooky and welcoming. So I had to try easier.
And we got him into the Hold Steady! Yay, The Internet.

Nothing wrong with that. 8.7 is a great score. Time, and room for growth, are what separate 8.7s from 10.0s.
A lot of art that is labeled "classic" on release ends up being simply the effluvium of a cultural moment, with little staying power. It takes time to really recognize greatness.
Have you also experienced the phenomena of disliking (or outright hating) a record at first, only for it to eventually weasel it's way onto your favorites? That was my experience with Queen 2. God, I love that record.
-
Wow. That did exactly what music journalism is supposed to do - it made me want to hear the record.
Some of the song titles really make me wanna kick something though. And this is coming from someone who owns everything by The Idle Race.
-
Umm... ask Jim.
S'ok. I answered my own question.
The Elephant 6 Recording Company (or simply Elephant 6) is a collective of American musicians who spawned some of the most notable independent bands of the 1990s, including The Apples in Stereo, The Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Of Montreal.[1]I do like me some Apples in Stereo.
-
I just stumbled upon Neutral Milk Hotel, and have been listening to In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. I dunno if anyone else is into them, or how I missed them at all, but I'm enthralled right now.
Is that part of the whole Elephant 6 scene?
-
I will crush you.
... Are we really going to hijack this thread, too? *sighs* Alright then. Let's go.
Ah, maybe we should discontinue that.
-
No no, it's definitely you. I'm telling.
Now, JD. Don't you remember how these games go? They always end in tears. Yours, buddy. Always yours.
Short rants.
