Wasted opportunity...hope we dat regret that....Need to score there...

If a lead-off walk scores 51% of the time, imagine a lead-off triple is 75%+.

Do we know that more strikes are called balls versus balls that are called strikes.  I think you would need to know that before concluding that the robó ump is better for hitters.  In ML games I see plenty of pitches on the line or inside the box that are called balls.

I think it’s safe to assume that the closer the ball is to the strike zone the higher % of strikes will be called.

But the game will have the ability to adjust the strike zone to adjust the offense.  If scoring is up too much, they widen the strike zone a couple of inches.

If it is a true representation of what the strike zone is actually supposed to be (in three dimensions) then I expect someone to break out a Rich Hill style curve ball that clips the strike zone but is basically unhittable.

I can see a future where guys can just clip the front end of the zone with a breaking ball that ends up in the dirt.

I agree.  The game would respond.  It would have to.  But in the interim it would be a very favorable run scoring environment.

I'm sort of convinced that after watching the game last night with the fully automated strike zone that offense is going to go up. Really close pitches were called balls so pitchers really have to try to keep the ball in the zone and bad stuff tends to happen when you have to stay in the zone and can't try to finesse close pitches.

This is a fantastic point and one I had not thought of before.  Good post.

Not really.  Rhodes, Fabian, Beavers.   Demoting McKenna to AA seems cold.  Might as well just release him.  Burdick provides the same service if the Orioles need it plus Burdick has options.

I think it’s time to cut bait.  I was not surprised no one claimed him. He could be a AAA depth piece for a middle-tier team.  I don’t see room for him in Norfolk.

I would like you to repeat that for people in the back! ;)

As the guy who has been a huge proponent of using statcast metrics over all others, glad to see them come around. While statcast data still can be refined, it was subjective in that it is literally based on the position of the player, how hard the ball is hit, and how far they have to throw among other factors.

So true.  With the ability to track all the movement in space that takes place on the field (ball, bat, player) traditional tallying stats just aren’t as accurate in the way of predicting future perforce or describing a players ability.  Eventually it starts to paint a picture but it takes a long time and is super noisy with so many independent variable involved in the outcomes.

Some may use WAR as gospel to too far an extent.

Others see people using WAR as a summary, and assume those people are using it as gospel.

I think people only use it as gospel when it backs up their argument.  When it doesn’t, they poke holes in it.

Now they need to move an OF unless they are going to play Kjerstad primarily at 1B.   Stowers, Norby, Burdick, McKenna, and Daniel Johnson.  Billy Cook was sent back down to Bowie.

Is there room for McKenna in Bowie?

That Homer keeps getting posted and I will never tire of hearing that announcers call of it. LOL

After he said “and that’s a home run” it sounded like he had spicy food and his stomach turned and only had 30 seconds to get to the bathroom.

  10. The first game against KC Urias barreled 2 balls to deep right center that would have been a HR in July.  If those balls go out, he’s tied for team lead in HR with a gaudy OPS and we aren’t having this conversation.

Maybe, but maybe because it’s the first 6 games, we  never had a group of hitters putting up video numbers at any point.   That was a great lineup too but the current numbers JUMP at you.

Interestingly their 21 R 23H record braking night last year was…..against Charlotte. lol

But my point is/was - this isn’t anything out of the blue or norm.  They’ve raked for years with the talent hoarded in AAA.

No, not like this they didn't.  At least not all at once.

Again it will obviously level out a bit but these numbers so far are silly.

By 4/29 last year they had already had (2) 20+ run games and a 17 run game.   On 4/29 they broke the then franchise hit record.

Folks forget they had Westburg, Ortiz, Cowser, Stowers, Norby & Prieto.  They were a juggernaut.  The line-up was just as potent.

Nice defensive play by Holliday tonight at 2B.

He made a few nice plays.  He also made a couple blunders (missed a throw for a CS & was caught off-guard in wrong position a couple times).  He’s going to need to show consistency in the field.

I'm taking these early Norfolk numbers with a bit of a grain of salt because clearly something isn't normal there, but.... talk about beating the door down.

This is nothing new.  They did all last year as well.

    Visual evidence...definitely looked longer.

One down 9th inning and Coby Mayo is the batter and there's a home run.

  16. OMG the bomb Mayo just hit was insane.  106.6 EV @ 27 degrees.  Statcast said 408, but that thing went way further.
