Under this scenario, I'd imagine Hays would man CF, with Diaz in RF and Santander in LF.

I guess the real question is, does it matter where they play if they can cover for a league average CF in the corners some?  And does some magical WAR number (oWAR and dWAR) make their deficiencies look better in one spot over the other.

Like say today, you played Mancini in CF, knowing he was below average, but had above average COF, does his ability to hit at an elite CF level balance the dWAR number given you may plus dWAR numbers in COF?

  2. I considered starting a thread, but wanted to ask this question.  Assuming all of Hays/Santander/Diaz become big leaguers of quality, who would play where?  All three seem to be fringe CF, maybe debatably league average, but all seem to have above average bats for CF, and potentially average to below average bats for RF/LF.  Does it matter in the long run or since one is next to the other, an above average fielding LF/RF could potentially make up for a average/below average CF.

  3. Anyone see what Corban Joseph is doing at AAA and now he's getting his cup of coffee in the bigs?  May have been a fun asset, even though old, to keep this squad together here for minimum salary.

As part of Saturday's trade, Baltimore received a pair of 17-year-old prospects and agreed to send Boston $1,777,839 to cover all but $1,577,000 of the $3,354,839 Cashner was due from his $8 million salary this year.

Baltimore already was responsible for $500,000 in performance bonuses Cashner had earned: $250,000 each for 10 and 15 starts. The Orioles agreed to reimburse Boston for the $625,000 bonus Cashner would earn for making 20 starts, the $250,000 each he would earn for 110 and 120 innings, $275,000 for 130 innings, $350,000 for 140 innings and $750,000 for 150 innings.

Was this previously reported that the O's will be paying the $2.5 million in bonuses to Cashner?  So the Red Sox are only paying him $1.6 mil for the remainder of the season. I think the fact that we got true lottery tickets and not even a top 20/30 guy in the Sox org is interesting given that we're giving up the money as well

  5. The talk is that at 3rd base, you move in an X, back left/back right/forward left/forward right.  At SS, you have to move more laterally, and make longer runs for a ball, rather than reactionary movements.  So a fuller frame, while maybe able to react the same, you may not be as "fast" once you fill out that is needed for the SS postion

I am not in sync with Elias these days.   And he is smarter so take this with the smallest grain of salt.

    1) I think Broxton is a platoon CF playing vs lefties.  He has hit them in the past.   He will replace Wilkerson for defense late in games.  He is a good pinch runner.  Wilkerson is hitting as the O's CF vs righties.  But does not hit lefties well.

Yea but remember when Broxton was being talked about like this after his rookie season:

Crazy high exit velocities, plays center like Cain, hits like Chris Carter (lots of hard hits lots of Ks), oh yea, and he can run.  The tools are there, though he's now older.  Let's see what plays.  No harm in this one.

Not crazy, but against the rules.

Kinda, and maybe to start the game.  But what if you had Davis play 1B, and Mancini (just picking a name) DH.  Then moved Manicini to first, therefore forefitting the DH.  Davis only has to field the first half inning, and then he comes out.  There's always a loophole.
