  1. With or without irony? Not a judgement, btw; just curious. There's certain acts one can listen to with or without. T Rex is my personal favorite for that one.
Without. It was a total commercial failure since maybe half the album is musique concrète sound collages. Plus it's a concept album about the Cold War which seems like an odd concept for 1983. Someone on AMG compared it to Kid A.
  2. Stumbled upon this incredible video tonight! I don't even remember where I saw this before, on TV probably. Only once. Never since. I have been thinking about it for YEARS. Trying on my own to make my voice do this. Without the slightest hint of success I might add.

What it is, is making your vocal chords resonate at an harmonic pitch. They are chords after all, similar to strings on a guitar. If you just touch a guitar string at certain intervals, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 etc., of the total length, it plays a "harmonic", a different higher pitched tone. It divides how the string vibrates by that interval. At the 12th fret on a guitar (halfway) it divides the vibration by two. At the 7th fret it divides it by three. Other places by four, five, etc.

The best part is you can change the length of your vocals chords! At will, with muscle-memory... which would be some acid-fueled dream on a guitar!

ALL of the sound you hear, in this video, is the two... TWO strings on his instrument, and this guy singing!

Have you looked at this yet?

These guys are probably the best known group of this style.
