Orioles might have found their future leadoff or second hitter in the lineup for the next 5 to 6 years. Only way to know is by playing Vavra everyday with the occasional off day for rest.

If he can stay healthy, I agree.

He could be a 10-20 HR guy with great OBP. That plays well in the 2 hole.

Then again it’s nowa postseason system where it’s no longer about admitting the very best teams, but only turning away the bad teams. Which I guess is exactly what MLB wanted.

I'll take it. More teams vying for the playoffs is better for baseball.

Big market teams can still assemble an elite roster, but anything can happen in a short series.

Is there an echo in the room?

Even in this small sample size Vavra shows so much more value than Odor.  Vavra's defense at 2B has to be absolutley terrible to justify Odor playing over him (which I doubt is the case).

They may be trying to avoid injury with Vavra.

I don't understand why we're entertaining trading prospects right now.  This is a roughly .500 team with multiple highly valuable players still in the minors.  It's very easy to get into a situation where the player you trade for is not only much more expensive and under team control for less time, but also not as good as the players you sent away.  Also, the Orioles are still very much longshots to even get to the 2022 playoffs.

Don't lose focus on the goal.  The goal isn't a '22 lottery ticket.  It's being contenders for a long time to come.

I would not mind the Orioles trying to bolster the MLB roster to try and sneak into the playoffs. But, there's really no reason to dig deep into the prospect pool to make it happen.

It will be interesting to see what kind of help Matt Harvey can give to the rotation once he is recalled.

  5. Is there a Bud Norris type out there (ok starting pitcher having a decent year on a crappy club) that wouldn't cost a ton?  Or a Joe Saunders type?

It can't derail the rebuild, but reinforcing this club could be the right move, especially if some more callups happen (Westburg, Vavra, etc).

The O's can hang this year. A chance to make the playoffs shouldn't be ignored.

I have seen Vavra twice in minor league games and both times he struck me as a guy who just has a next level skill with the bat.  He knows what he wants to do and understands how to do it.  Tremendous contact skills.

Vavra would be a great option if he wasn't so fragile.

I think Nestor Aparicio needs to do “Free the Birds 2”. Or maybe it’s “Free Lou”.  Not sure.  Was anyone else at the game in 2006 and did you partake in the events???

No, because most of us here think Nestor is a clown. (Or at least did at the time, maybe things have changed in 16 years).

    Two questions:

Is Mussina the greatest Oriole not to have his number retired?

For those who vote no on this, if Mussina had signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers instead of the Yankees, would your answer be different?

    1. Yes.

    2. No.

Regardless of where he chose to seek employment afterwards, nobody can deny his greatness in Baltimore.

Mussina's number should have been retired, but he shouldn't get a statue.  The old mantra for not retiring Mussina's number was that he wasn't in the Hall of Fame.  If the Hall of Fame put an Oriole on his plaque, the O's would come up with a new reason not to retire his number.  There was a lot of hard feelings and pettiness both ways.  Shouldn't a player get to chose his own cap, within reason?  Wade Boggs supposedly wanted to go into the Hall of Fame with a Yankee cap is out of bounds, IMO.

Didn't he want to go in with a Devil Rays cap?

  10. It's really hard to predict the roster for 2 seasons from now.

I don't think Vavra stays healthy enough to make a meaningful impact in Baltimore, but I hope I'm wrong.

Cowser, Henderson, Stowers will probably be a part of it.

Hays, Rutsch, Mountcastle will probably be a part of it, too.

But, who knows: other guys may step up, some prospects may flame out.  Trades happen. Free agents can be signed. So many variables.

I think the Orioles will be in a position to contend in 2024, I just don't know how the roster will look at this juncture.

Murray also did not leave as a free agent, he was traded away by a stupid Front office and basically chased away by a ridiculous press.

Easily one of the worst things that the Orioles ever did.

If the O's kept Murray, The 1989 squad would have probably made the playoffs.

The O's would not have traded for Glenn Davis.

The Orioles of the 90's would have had Pete Harnisch, Curt Schilling, and Mike Mussina heading into the '92-'97 stretch, which would have been a damn good rotation.  Having an outfield with Steve Finley alongside Brady Anderson would have been icing on the cake.

I can definitely see one of those Orioles squads winning the World Series.

Trading Murray was easily one of the stupidest moves, which led to a cascade of stupider moves and missed opportunities.

I'm fairly certain my thoughts on this have been expressed.

Saying that, as others have pointed out, everyone who's had their number retired by the Orioles are in the HoF, won either a Cy Young, MVP, or Rookie of the year AND won a World Series as an Oriole.

None of them also left the team for the Yankees via Free Agency. Mu$$ina still remains the only player to be drafted, developed and star for the Orioles who left the team for the Yankees in his prime.

Yes, I know all of the Angelos drama and yes I know dealing with Angelos was a horrible experience for almost everyone, but at the end of the day, the day he signed with the Yankees he gave up his chance to leave a legacy in baseball.

He choose to be a 3rd or 4th starter and another hired gun for an organization that has been known for hired guns since free agency started in 1977. His own brother at the time said that Mussina did not enjoy the pressure of being a number one pitcher. Had he stayed (Angelos eventually offere him the same money as the Yankees) he would have been up there with Palmer as the greatest Orioles pitcher ever. That would have been a legacy.

He chose otherwise which is his right, but at no point should the Orioles give him that legacy back. The fact that he choose to go in without an Orioles cap (which made total sense honestly and I'm glad that he didn't) cemented this fact.

I can't see any case for retiring the number of a player not wearing an Orioles cap on the HoF.

That's interesting that Angelos offered a match of the Yankees offer.

I'm ok with Mussina having not taken a discount to leave, but contract parity makes the fact that he left sting even more.

It would have been interesting to see what the 2004 squad could have done with Moose.  They were in the top 10 in runs scored. They probably would have also needed to add a mid-rotation starter that year to really make it work, but that squad wasn't terrible by any means.

    Mussina - Lopez - ??? - Bedard - Ponson/Cabrera

I doubt it would have been enough to get past the Red Sox and get the wild card spot.  98 wins is not a walk in the park.

I agree with this, but GR is going to be on a strict innings limit, and I'm assuming Hall would be, too.

So they can help this year, but probably only so much.  I'm assuming G-Rod would be shut down after he reaches a certain innings limit, minors or majors.  Hall, too.

I wonder if they limit things on the front-end or back-end?

I think it would be wise to use guys like G Rod and hall on a 3-4 innings limit in the early going, and as the season goes on: stretch them further.  On the weird off-chance that the Orioles are hanging in contention, it would be nice to have them available later in the season.  And if the O's are fully out of it before too long, they can continue on that schedule.

A look at some of the current MLB rankings for the Os:

    • K rate: 25th
    • BB rate: 14th
    • ERA: 17th
    • FIP: 21st
    • xFIP: 22nd
    • WAR: 8th
    • WPA: 12th
    • HR rate: 11th
    • Hard hit%: 13th
    • Barrel%: 16th
    • Exit velocity: 22nd
    • xwOBA: 29th
    • whiff%: 7th
    • weak contact%: 12th

Definitely a mixed bag here.  On one hand, the K rate sucks.  OTOH, the whiff% would indicate that the K rate should get better.  The BB rate has been very good and what we are getting from Tyler Wells is a big help there.  The HR rate will go up but can they keep other stats the same or get better?

K Rate is important, but some pitchers can get away with a lower K-rate.  It depends on their pitching style.  Jeremy Guthrie got away with a low K-rate for years, and was very effective because he was able to induce weak contact.

This Orioles pitching staff seems to be fairly good at doing that, as well.

I understand the importance of K-rate. It's one thing a pitcher can control, and one stat that is a plainly objective measure of a pitchers skill. However, not all pitchers are strikeout pitchers, and if they can be crafty, they can be effective.

These stats say to me: Orioles pitchers generally don't have overpowering stuff, but they will throw strikes and pitch to contact. They've been able to control homerun damage thus far, which is encouraging.

As the weather warms and things get more humid, it will be interesting to see how these metrics change.
