This research has been done a few times, I'm pretty sure with consistent results. Here's one example:

    https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/four-strikes-and-youre-out/

While I strongly favor the goal of improving the accuracy of ball/strike calls through the use of technology, I think I understand why some oppose that. I have some reservations myself because I'm not sure how the system would operate or what home-plate umpiring would look like.

What I can't understand at all opposition to having MLB develop and apply that technology, showing us how it would work, and trying it out in fall league or other non-MLB games.

Thanks for posting that link. At the end of the day, if the umps simply called the balls and strikes properly with no relation to the count, I think there would be a lot less chatter for technology aided strike zones as long as horrible umps like Angel Hernandez etc were actually demoted, removed from the game etc. That's obviously asking for a lot and about a 0 percent chance Hernandez and other awful umps leave the game.

  2. Poor umpiring had a direct effect on 2 O's games this past week. Tuesday August 8th against Anaheim, the O's were down 3-2 to the Angels with Rickard up to bat with a 3-0 count. The next pitch was so far inside all Palmer could say was "wow!" when the home plate ump called it a strike. Next pitch pop up to end the game. Jones was due up next and we will never know what could have happened. Can't find the article right now but umps are known to call more strikes on 3-0 counts even when it's not close.

Yesterday against the A's, Trumbo struck out looking in the 3rd inning I believe, O's had runners 2nd and 3rd, it was a 3-2 pitch about half a foot outside, once again not even close to a strike. Thanks to Jim Wolf the O's don't get a bases loaded opportunity.

In the bottom of the 4th, Hellickson has Chapman at 0-2, next pitch gets plenty of the outside portion of the strike zone yet called a ball. Of course, Chapman would go on to homer that at bat with this at bat being a game changer.

Right now, every game is crucial for the O's. I can't stand poor umpiring, either do something about the zone or get better umps than Jim Wolf.

Gary is MLB's closest thing to Gus Johnson

Gary gets fooled by routine flies quite often too.

If I was throwing back a few during a broadcast I would probably be mistaking a lot of deep flies for home runs. Been a huge fan of Thorne going back to when he did baseball on espn and hockey for ABC. Not even a hockey fan but would catch some of the playoff games he broadcasted for the entertainment factor. He would take the game up a few more notches.

Regarding Ben McDonald he's awesome. He does work with espn for college baseball and I wish he would get promoted to the Sunday night baseball crew. Bump Aaron Boone out and put in McDonald. Boone has to be the most boring commentator I've ever heard in my life. Much worse than FP.

The Yankees are 0-7-1 over their last 8 series ........ their worst 8-series stretch since the 1991 season.

They have not won 2 games in a row a month, since June 11-12.

I have no scientific proof to back me up, but I'm nearly 100 percent certain the world is a better place when the yanks lose.

As fans, we can choose to tune the team out for a game or two if we're that disgusted (although I won't be doing that.)

The players have no choice ..... they have to get right back on the field tomorrow, and put what happened tonight out of their minds.

I'll be rooting for the O's tomorrow as usual, everyone have a good night.

That one stung ........ a lot.

Of course it had to be Hechavarria who came through with the RBI single to tie the game as well. Between stung and a lot, I filled in those blanks with a few curse words at the sports bar and I usually try to avoid cursing in general but that was definitely a rough L.

McNamee, haven't heard that name for a while. Only matter of time Cousin Yuri makes a public appearance.

    (SEPTEMBER 16th)

    Orioles win.

    Yankees lose.

Although the Orioles are chasing the Red Sox, who are 2 games ahead of them in the AL East, tonight's combination of "Orioles Win, Yankees Lose" pushes the Highlanders further back behind them, and decreases the Yankees' chances of making the post-season at all.

Starting with the Dodgers recently, their schedule turned up a serious notch.

  9. Dropping the third game to the Rays stings. Bundy was left in the game too long, Jones didn't get to a ball he probably should have caught, the pitching wasn't good, and no pinch hitter for Joseph with lead off runner on and no outs. Joseph would end up laying down a sacrifice bunt and the O's didn't score.

  10. How good would this guy look in our rotation right now?

    3.58 ERA 1.19 WHIP .251 BAA 7.7 K/9 IP in 118 innings in a hitter's park (Miller Field).

I don't care what the guy's fastball clocks in at. He misses bats. Looks like a solid # 3 MLB starter to me.

It was a horrible trade, I still don't get it, I'm glad the O's are still in first.

  11. We all appreciate Jones but my goodness, he just gave his at bat away against Robertson. Such a horrible at bat even for his swinging standards.

  12. Weak hitting Minnesota Twins team too.

The twins were either 2nd or 3rd in all of MLB in runs in the month of July I believe.

They continued that by putting up a 12 spot on the Indians yesterday.

  13. Yet again, I have to read in the paper, another child yet inside a hot car and is now dead.

It got so bad, that I know of a couple of electronic devices that will alert your smartphone when you so many feet away from your car, and something is in the car seat.

    Another unforutne and unnecessary event.

Regarding adults leaving their children in cars. Pulled up to a Aldie to pick up some chips and snacks. There was a couple of squad cars in the lot. Didn't know what was going on first then it became clear there was a kid in the car and they were about to bust the door open. One cop stayed by the door as the kid signaled he was okay while the other cop ran into the store with the speaker to make big announcement on whose car and where is the parent. A mother rolled out a bit shocked with a full cart of groceries. The officer started scolding the lady and of course soon after they got the kid out the car. Unreal people do this. They may have arrested the mother can't remember exactly.

In regards to baseball, hey one thread on Davis being awful at hitting isn't good enough, we need 4 more. Are you not aware Ubaldo starts tonight? Guess what, here is another 3 threads on the topic. Did you not here about all the sawx road games, well let me tell you again 2 more times. Ugh

  14. Between the O's trading for him and the Rockies trading a cost controlled outfielder for a reliever in order to clear space for him I don't understand teams fascination for Parra.

The Brewers definitely fleeced the O's. Doesn't feel good being on the wrong side of a trade.

  15. Drivers!!!!!!!!!!!

Put the frickin phone down and drive!

    End of Rant!

My big beef is with the extensions/FA contracts that he has handed out to aging veterans

    1. Hardy

    2. O'day

    3. Davis

    4. Ubaldo

    5. Gallardo

and the lack of extending the young core before they are a year away from FA

    1. Tillman

    2. Schoop

    3. Manny

and the loss of prospects (and a Cy Young) to rentals that didn't make a difference

    1. Arietta

    2. Strop

    3. Hader

    4. 1st round comp pick

    5. Tarpley

    6. Brault

    7.

Yes, and also, there are about 10 threads on how the offense sucks right now. What's wrong with 1.

  16. o

    (vs. ANGELS, 7/09)

Entered the game with runners on 1st and 3rd with nobody out, and the Orioles trailing by a score of 2-1.

After walking the first batter that he faced, Givens got 3 outs without ceding any additional runs.

He pitched an additional shutout inning in the 7th to keep his team close.

They wouldn't have won the game today without Givens. He gets my player of the game vote.
