Is this true? Wow. I did not know this and was too young to really be following the minor leagues in the '90s.

Position players like Billy Ripken, Craig Worthington, Larry Sheets, and maybe David Segui and Jeffery Hammonds could be considered every day players for awhile in that time frame.

  2. FWIW, Burnes to Orioles came up in the MLBTR chat.  Ortiz alone got a response that Steve Adams didn't think so, but Matt Arnold may feel differently.

The package proposed from Jim Bowden is way too high IMHO.

Is Joey ortiz enough for Corbin burnes?

I don't think so, but maybe Matt Arnold feels differently. In general though, if the offer you're constructing for a top-tier trade target like Burnes consists of someone (or someoneS) who feel  largely superfluous to the current big league product, it's probably light.

That's not a knock on Ortiz -- more so just a comment on the depth the O's generally have in the infield.

Correct.  But this could be part of the negotiations.  MLB would love to have an owner's group that could dissolve the MASN agreement.

I should have said would instead of could

He can’t simply move the Nats to Monumental.  MASN has the rights to broadcast the Nats in perpetuity.   The litigation only relates to what the fair market value of the rights fees were in 2012-16.   It’s got nothing to do with MASN’s exclusive rights to broadcast the games.  Now if MASN wanted to sell the rights, that would be a different story.  But it’s not something Leonsis could do unilaterally if he owned the Nats.

192 innings.    He’s not great but he wasn’t bad and he provided what they wanted and needed.    On a staff where the top 3 is probably Bradish, GRod, and Means,  he still slots in along with Kremer for a stable 4-5.    This would allow Irvin to be a long man and keep Wells and Hall in the pen.   It also requires no prospects and a short term financial commitment.   I know everyone wants that #1 or #2 starter but I don’t see it happening.   We would still be going into next season with a stronger rotation than 2022 considering GRod being over his growing pains and Means being available from the start.   This still allows for an in season acquisition (not that I would get my hopes up).

If it is another one-year deal at $10M (or a little more), I'd do it.  I think we'll be risk averse as to long-term deals, especially for pitchers.

  6. Obviously not in the big-name, multi-year realm, but how about Jose Quintana as a one-year deal trade option?  The Mets are not going to compete in 2024 and this is his last year at one year, $13M.  He seemed to be healthy upon his return.  If we're going for an injury risk-type (like Maeda) one year deal, Quintana is a lefty starter.  This may be reasonable.  Would a nominal trade of Tate for Quintana make sense?

BTW, if they lose does anyone want to buy a complete set of Topps regular issues Orioles teams? From 1954 to the Present. Also, have 99% of Donruss and Fleer. Plus too many autographed balls and cards to mention. If they can't win one stinking playoff game in a 100 win season I don't want this stuff anymore.

BTW, I still have my Millennium Falcon (not your Dukes of Hazard version, but the original, unaltered one) and the box.  But the box is little beat up from numerous moves.  We're all rooting for the O's to win the next few hours, days, and weeks.  Take care.  On the off chance, we don't win and you sell, I'm interested.

The five in one day reminds me of the limit of passing players through waivers a few years ago.  If this is a limit, I don't know why another 5 weren't processed the next day.  The Zimmermann and McKenna issues are probably due to the 10-day rule unless someone else goes on the IL.  More importantly, we'll be down to a 26 roster for the next series.  Let's go O's.

This was what I meant by the 5 recalls in one day.  Take care.  Let's go, O's.

  10. Cowser still has less than 45 days of service time.  So, he keeps his rookie status intact.  Convenient timing.

Hopefully, Holliday comes up on Aug 31 and helps the O's to the WS and keeps his rookie status into next year.  Then, the O's rookies will go 1 and 2 in the ROY voting in 2024 to rack up the extra draft picks after Henderson wins ROY this year.

My main takeaway from this whole situation is that the organization is not in a stable place.  The on field product has distracted for over a year now and has been a joy to watch.  But there is no way a stable org can have something like this go down + have dozens of national talking heads jump all over it and come out unscathed.   The entire thing makes me feel sick to my stomach and has me questioning why I spend so much time supporting this POS franchise.

Seldom poster; but I agree with you (and many others).  FWIW, I'm an old Baltimore Colts Marching Band alum that lived through that. In the past, Johnny Unitas was always there to light the Christmas tree in Woodlawn.  In the late sixties, all of the seventies, most of the eighties and early nineteens, my family lived off Windsor Mill Road and my parents always commented on the way to Memorial Park as we passed Tucker Lane that Jim Palmer lived there when they moved there in late 1965 into 1966.  Gene Brabender and Harvey Haddix were there also in that time frame (and  a few others that I don't remember).  I didn't adopt the Ravens when they assumed the old Colts stats.  The long-term lease needs to be signed as soon as possible.  I want that resolved now.  As much as I like Kevin Brown, this is secondary as to the Orioles as a whole.  Take care, Eric

The rule is 45 pre-September days or 130 at-bats to maintain rookie eligibility. There aren't that many days until September and I doubt he would get 130 at-bats even if he were up here tomorrow.

It was changed a couple of years ago to 45 non-IL days during the regular season.

    Rookie Eligibility

    Definition

A player shall be considered a rookie unless he has exceeded any of the following thresholds in a previous season (or seasons):

    • 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues.
    • 45 total days on an active Major League roster during the Championship Season (excluding time on the Injured List).

A player must have rookie eligibility to be considered for any MLB rookie awards -- such as the American League or National League Rookie of the Year Award -- or appear on any MLB Pipeline prospect lists.

Hope he gets that extra $100K for World Series MVP.  Lol.  But I think it's a reasonable pick up that does not cost too much.  We still have the second lowest payroll.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisco/news/oakland-as-ink-3-25m-deal-with-japanese-pitcher-shintaro-fujinami/

Fujinami would earn $100,000 for MVP, $75,000 for finishing second in the voting and $50,000 for third, and he can earn similar bonuses for Cy Young Award balloting. He would get $50,000 for making the All-Star Game, $100,000 for World Series MVP or Silver Slugger, and $50,000 for Gold Glove or League Championship Series MVP.

He will be a free agent at the end of the contract.
