He's had two save opportunities this year, he's got 1 save. Sure he's the best option, I agree, so we can stop using data and just feelings. Cano for closer, 2024.

He’s not terribly far off from where Britton was is K/9 over his 3 good years here, or Mariano Rivera’s career average. Sure it would be great if K/9 were in the teens somewhere, but he does get a good number of ground balls.

FTR, I don’t love Cano there either, I’d be interested to see Suarez closing.

Whether you want to call it "breathtaking stupidity" or just a normal level of stupidity... the point was, it was stupid, and he needs to be criticized for it. This is nothing new for Hyde -- he is always making dumb in-game decisions, the worst of which are ones like these: burning our best relievers for no reason, or warming guys up repeatedly and then not bringing them into the game (Buck was good at avoiding this and made a point about it).

This will have a cumulative effect throughout the season, and Elias isn't going to be able to bail him out this time by using the Norfolk shuttle to keep our bullpen fresh like last year. Most everyone is out of options.

I get that people don't want to hear these things after a win but they need to be said.

You can make a bad decision that isn’t stupid. And either way, it’s not objectively a bad decision. It was a move that won the game, using a guy that hadn’t pitched in 4 days (Cano), had pitched once in 4 days (Coulombe) and hadn’t pitched in 5 days (Kimbrel). Not like it’s a group that pitched every game in the last series.

Im sure the goal today would be to not use  Coulombe and then only use Kimbrel once more this series. Remember Monday is an off day.

The pressure now turns to Means. With the way Irvin is pitching there is absolutely no way that you can remove him from the rotation right now. He has earned his place for a while.

I think this kind of “competition” actually can bring out the best in everyone because guys know they have to bring their best if they want to stay starting.

Plus you need depth due to the high likelihood of injuries. Can never have too much starting pitching.

I believe Means is starting today. Was swapped in for Suarez.

Back to Nick, he’s one of my 5-6 favorite Orioles of all time, even though you wouldn’t put him in the 5-6 best.  Just tremendously steady and reliable.  And, he came along during a really dark period for the Orioles as well as their minor league system.  I used to refer to him as “the Boy Who Lived” because he was the only decent player our farm system produced over a 7-8 year period.

I’ll never forget that shot of him on the field after the O’s clinched the AL East, taking in the scene with a tear in his eye.  That’s more memorable to me than any of the great things he did on the field.

I will make every effort to be at his induction ceremony, even though I know his acceptance speech is likely to be forgettable.  Because I’ll never forget his importance to the franchise.

His Speech Above Expectation (SAE) value could be off the charts though. Who knows, maybe he’s been holding it all in for this.

Just hope he doesn’t pull a BJ Surhoff and show up in a t shirt.

Our attendance would go up if they started lowering concession prices and bleacher seats. Let fans spend 20-30$ to get a ticket, beer and hot dog.

They do let you bring in food. I go to enough games on a membership plan that it’s not worth buying inside and I always bring a big hoagie or something.

Honestly, I think a Big Boogs is worth the price.  I compare stadium food to what I would get at a restaurant, and at a high-end smokehouse, I’d spend close to $20 for a BBQ sandwich.  Granted……for that same price at home with my meat slicer, I can probably get enough to last me a months worth of work lunches, but again, I rate stadium prices different.

I’m hesitant to suggest this, but Deddle’s Doughnuts behind 78/80 is worth the price.  $10 for the small box, $18 for the large, and you can get the doughnuts with a choice of glaze, topping and sauce.  For a gourmet doughnut, I’d put them up with anyone.

The new chicken place at the city Eutaw Street entrance is pretty good this year too and worth the price.  I do want to try the smash burger and the pupusaria soon

****Forgive me on the prices, I do get the STH discount so I might be quoting my prices.

I just think the Boogs sandwiches are bad. I used to enjoy them so I’m not sure if I’ve started going to better pit beef places or if they’ve gotten worse.
That said, I typically judge a BBQ place by the quality of their sides, Boog’s beans are an insult to baked beans, especially at that price.

  7. Love the 6:30 start during the week, love the ~4PM on Saturdays.

Weekdays I really enjoy listening to the first few innings making/cleaning up from dinner, bathing the kids etc. Can follow the game well enough and then sitting down to watch the remainder of the game is a little more of a treat.

If a player can’t run or has a concussion is little different than upper back tightness.

In football you can come out and go back in. This isn’t football.

I don’t understand your distinction. Kimbrel clearly had an issue, they came out to check on him. He wasn’t right his previous appearance.

The coach has to decide if someone is ok.

The funny this is that weightlifter guy knows who he is. DB thinks he’s bringing value.

It’s on Kimbrel to tell him he can’t go. Hyde can’t tell him he is hurt.

There’s a great Mike Tomlin video about it being the coaches responsibility to determine this. The player is almost always going to tell you they’re fine.

PS it’s ok to hate the Steelers and respect them

Again, I didn't say it HAD to be a trade.  That said, that certainly COULD have been the way to do so, especially when we have Stowers and Norby who are never going to play for the Os.  Not to mention the other depth we have, if needed.  But we also could have opened the checkbook a bit and signed some of the decent middle relief type pitchers who were available instead of just standing pat on the Webbs of the world and picking up the scraps from other teams.  Or sign another starter and keep Irvin/Wells/whoever in the bullpen.  But we didn't, and we are paying for it now.

How would a middle reliever have helped today?

Perez is out. Two starters are out. You don’t win the World Series in April.

Short sighted?  The bullpen has been our main weakness all year.  Not just today.  Today is just magnified because we are blowing a lead to the 2nd worst team in baseball.  But the bullpen needs a ton of help, and not just at the closer position.  So no, I don't think it's either shallow or short sighted.  We simply didn't do enough in the offseason to shore up the bullpen.  Period.

Read my above post. Needing bullpen help is different than trading for it.

  13. 1 minute ago, pdiddy said:

It was pretty obvious that they needed another arm during the offseason. Nothing short sighted about that.

Fine, they needed another arm. You recommend trading a major league caliber infielder (assuming that is the surplus) for a reliever which has the most YOY volatility in the sport? Is that the idea?

  14. Just now, forphase1 said:

Man we miss Bautista.  This is all on Elias though, bullpen should have been more shored off in the offseason by trading more of the blocked talent or signing more/better guys.

This is a pretty shallow and short sighted take

  15. Thought it a little weird that the “players of the game” at the stadium were Adley and Mountcastle. Irvin was a shoo in and how often will he get the honor and a quick interview for the fans?

I’d still despise him.  He is my least favorite Oriole of all time. He’s got the opportunity to do the most amazing thing that most of us would want to do and every time he gets a chance to do it he doesn’t have his head in the game and he doesn’t seem to care. No team wants him, but the Orioles keep holding onto him. And i’m judging his character not just his play because his play is obviously horrible.

He’s your least favorite of all time? Do you remember Pedro Severino?

He's one of the best of the Joe Buck clones, if you enjoy that straight laced, paint by numbers broadcasting.

I enjoy my broadcasters who bring something extra to the broadcast, Harry Carey, Jimmy Piersall, Bill  White Phil Rizzuto,Gary Thorne.

There’s an element of Joe Buck to him, sure, but I don’t think that’s entirely fair, especially as a negative. He’s a much goofier guy, and in that respect less polished. I’ve never felt like I know who Buck is, but Kevin I’ve got a pretty good idea.

This is fake news.   Before today's game, at the time this was posted, Judge's last 5 games were:

    0 for 4
    1 for 5
    1 for 3
    0 for 4
    1 for 4

    That's 3 for 20, not 1 for 20.   He did have 12 Ks.

He went 0 for 4 with 2 Ks today.  So now 3 for 24, with 14 Ks.

Not that it matters but I have him at 2-21 with 12K’s prior to 4/21 at 11AM when the tweet was tweeted.

Yankees can’t love the knowledge that their 6’7” $360M man has a toe that is going to require constant maintenance and treatment the rest of his career. Sure wish he had been on a different team and I could root for him.
