Is a guy with one HR in the last 28 games a "slugger"?

Great point but perhaps all the more reason to trade him if what he really is is a gap hitting 1B/DH/OF.  Then again he did have how many home rums in the first few weeks of the season?  He's just slumping now most likely.  If the O's can sell him as a decent OF with home and gap power then he'll have more value.

The Rays had CJ  Cron at 1B last season. He hit 30 HR, OPS'd .816 and earned 2.0 rWAR. The Rays DFA'd Cron and the Twins claimed him off of waivers. They aren't giving up any prospects for Mancini.

Perhaps not the smartest move by the Rays.  But Mancini is a better player and more importantly this is a much different season for the Rays.  How many chances do they get to win the division?  But even if not the Rays, somebody should give up some decent players for a guy that has been one of the top hitters in the AL this season.

I'm not trying to pin you down to bring this up later, I'm curious.

I'm having a hard time guessing what is value actually is.

On one hand he's a bat only right handed hitter.  On the other hand he's been pretty productive in that role two of the last three seasons.

I think Mancini's value is greatest to a team like Tampa, who could use a top 1B/DH type, who is a contender yet could every well get taken over by New York or Boston, and who doesn't want to spend a lot of money.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to trade Mancini.  Relatively young, cheap, mashing.  Those are the types of players we've been whining that we don't have for years.

It's cavalier thinking that Mountcastle is going to produce in the majors and that we should just hand him a spot because..well, prospect status.

If Mountcastle fails to produce you would still have the prospects you traded Mancini for.  The point is a) will Mancini still be around by the time the O's can seriously contend again, and b) if he is still around will he still be this good or will he be too expensive?  Replacing a player like Mancini isn't easy, but it's easier than finding good pitching prospects or infielders to load up on.

    Too much team control left.

I see your point.  Most decent or even bad teams would normally think about trading a cheap player as good as Mancini unless they were really stacked with players.  But these Orioles are really, really, really bad.  I think even Dan and Andy would have their hands forced.

  6. 2 minutes ago, Can_of_corn said:

I don't think that it is the type of move that Dan or Andy would make if they found themselves in this situation.

    Was that clearer?

Yeah that's clearer, but I don't see why Dan or Andy would not trade Mancini in the same situation.  It's old man Angelos who likely wouldn't trade him.

Trade Mancini? He should be playing 1st. Davis should be in Texas fishing.

A contender like the Tampa Bay Rays could use a slugger at 1B.  What if you could trade Mancini to Tampa for two top prospects and three good ones?   A team like Tampa especially would highly value Mancini because he's cheap.  Depends who the guys are, but that's how the O's get better faster.

That is the type of move I wouldn't expect to see from Dan or Andy.

The Orioles under Dan had a shot at contending, so trading Mancini wouldn't have made sense.  Under Andy it maybe wouldn't have made sense either because those teams were closer to contending than this one.

I'm glad you started this thread. Need to see this sustained, but it definitely throws a kink into future plans based on where we were a couple of months ago.

It makes the Davis/Mancini/Mountcastle+ log jam a potential long term issue. This is actually a good problem to have if this production is truly a real sign of things to come.

The O's should at least consider trading Mancini.  His trade value may never be this high again, and by the time the O's might be contenders again he'll probably be expensive.

Walk the leadoff batter down one. Still play the shift against Davis. He still can't bunt. Swings and ball four and then strikes out. ZERO hits for the season. Why is he playing?

Yeah, trying to bunt might be an idea just to try something different.  I wonder if Chris Davis is the main reason Peter Angelos' health deteriorated.

Traded away this year, plus one future Orioles HoFer:

    Yankees:  Zach Britton

    Brewers:  Jonathan Schoop

    Dodgers:  Manny Machado

Braves:  Kevin Gausman, Brad Brach, Nick Markakis

So who are you guys pulling for?  I don't think the Yankees can win the WS but having Britton get a ring would take some of the sting out of it for me.  I'm hoping at least one of our former players can win a WS this year.  Anyone but Boston, really.

I'd really love to see Nick get a ring, I think that would be so f'ing cool so I'm pulling hard for the Braves.  I don't really care about Gausman and Brach but I hope they perform well in postseason action.

Someone must have mentioned this already but you forgot:

Red Sox: Steve Pearce, Eduardo Rodriguez

    Brewers: Josh Hader

    Braves: Darren O'Day

Glad the O's are  rid of Schoop and Machado.  The Schoop trade may be one of the worst in Brewers history.   I love Schoop but he's not proving to be a special player.  Machado is a great player but let him be a tool on some other team, some other team that'll probably regret signing him.

The Gausman trade, however, was a terrible one for the O's.  Another trade where the O's undervalue their young, controllable pitching.  I'm sick of seeing former Orioles pitch in the postseason for other teams.  Now it's Josh Hader.

  13. Nick Markakis is known for his ability to get on base.  He has a .380 OBP this year, and the worst OBP he ever had was .329.  On the other hand, the best OBP Adam Jones ever had was .335.  To top it off, Markakis leads the NL in hits, which is a pretty stunning achievement at any age.

Clearly, next to Markakis, Adam Jones is known for other things than getting on base; but I think in this case the higher OBP and the extraordinary number of hits probably leads to an older player get a better contract than the little bit younger player.

Jones' skill set may be perceived to be more in decline than it really is, while with Markakis this is clearly not the case.  It all depends on whether teams think Markakis discovered something in his swing and made an adjustment -- or whether he just had an unusually lucky season.

Anyone think that they would have tried to sign him if they didn't have the Davis contract?

Maybe, but should they considering their budget, what Manny will cost and the fact that they aren't close to competing?  Considering the O's are the worst team in the league this year (ok maybe second worst) why would Manny stay?

The only part that is truly painful is that Manny is officially gone. I absolutely loved watching him play for us. I’m a bit embarrassed to feel sentimental, but he was the most gifted player I have seen put on an Orioles uniform. He was the one guy who all others teams wished they had, an Oriole mentioned repeatedly at The Little League World Series when kids told the country who their favorite player was. We don’t get many of those and it may be a long time before we get another.

He was a pleasure to watch. He brought life to Camden Yards that had been missing and is now gone. He will be missed by this life long O’s fan.

The only kind of organization that can keep a player like Manny is a successful one.  As long as the Orioles have one or two years of success for every 4 or 5 years of losing then they'll most likely be forced to trade their very best players.

    We love Dodger Stadium.

Yeah, and I haven't been to a game there in a couple years.  I see the O's play the Angels in Anaheim every now and then.  Once I saw the O's against the Padres at Petco.  All nice stadiums, though Dodger games used to be sometimes kind of scary depending on where you sat.

Of course they can absorb the loss much better than a team like the Orioles could. But given that this is the type of injury that can potentially ruin a pitcher, it's awful news for an organization regardless of their current situation.

Yeah, it sounds like his injury is pretty unique.  Of course it's bad news.  I wasn't suggesting it isn't.  I live in L.A. and the Dodgers are kind of my second favorite team.

One of my friends is a life-long, die-hard Dodgers fan. He frets worse than any O's fan I've ever met. We're all the same.

I live in L.A.  Dodgers fans are feeling very good these days playing so well and with the Cubs, Cards and Giants having down years.  Now if they could just shake those pesky DBacks.  More than any year in recent memory this feels like their year, but it does feel like the year for Houston and Washington too.
