Right now Chase DeLauter looks like a stud, but if we pick him Good God will we be loaded with LH outfield prospects. I know the conventional wisdom is to always go for the best player and worry about where to play them later, but is there a limit to that philosophy and if so where is it?

He would have to be a clear cut above the other options with more positional flexibility for me, but Elias doesn't seem to worry about that. As always, though, if he's an All Star - it doesn't matter.

My cat Nikki passed away today. Our family is devastated. She was 17 years old. Please, if you have a pet or pets, give them extra love and attention tonight.

I keep some photos of her on this site: https://sokanpets.org

I need escapism from this horrible, empty feeling. An Orioles win to get them over .500 would be a (small) salve.

Oh yeah! And in a few hours, I'll take my mom to Mercy Hospital in Baltimore to have spine surgery. It's low risk and she's expected to make a full recovery in 2-4 weeks. I'm more worried about her (and my) emotional wellbeing after we lost our treasured furry friend.

    Let's go, O's! :(

I'm sorry to hear this. My condolences on your cat (our family has one that's 12 who looks similar) and best of luck with to your mom with surgery. Hope they get some wins for you in the coming days to help take your mind off things.

I question weighing such a small sample size of data as heavily as they seemed to.

Certainly interesting that they seem to really buy into their projections for '20. This year is obviously an anomaly and given how much tends to change regarding prospect rankings between one year and the next it's impossible to say what they "should" have valued more.

I'm fairly confident that if the full season played out the top 10 rankings from BA and other sources would have differed a good bit from where they ended up. It's possible Kjerstad would have still be ranked around 8-10th, but he could also have made a Bleday-like jump. Not saying he's the most likely candidate to improve his stock -- the same could be said for many of the other top prospects.

I'll blame it on your sleep deprivation.

Seriously, largest pool, second pick, finishing fourth isn't impressive.

It might not be "impressive", but it is noteworthy given the amount of doom and gloom permeating around here during the draft. We certainly should be towards the top given where we started.

Don't we have Gunnar Henderson as the shortstop we're grooming for the big leagues?  Did we just use round 1A draft pick to fill a minor league roster for the next 12 years?

Not everyone expects Gunnar to stick at SS. There's also no rule that you can only have 1 SS prospect in the minors. If they can stick at that position -- they can likely play anywhere.

The problem with this theory is that Kjerstad wasn't the next guy on the board for anyone.  He was the fifteenth.  So if Boras is being impossible with Martin, you take Lacy or Meyer or Hancock.  Or someone. Not a corner outfielder with K rate issues projected for the middle of the first round.

I would bet every dollar I have that Kjerstad was closer to 2 on the Orioles board than 15th.

To play Devil's advocate, maybe the money for the International market came out of the draft?

That is certainly possible. I hope that it isn't the case. I will be very disappointed if we don't spend all (or very close to all) of our draft allotment. Still doesn't make the original claim any less ridiculous when we gave Adley a record breaking signing bonus a year ago. Here's hoping we snag some premium over-slot talent and that our two picks today end up winners. At the end of the day all any of us want is a winning club to cheer for.

Okay, now I’m pissed. I gave the Orioles the benefit of the doubt with the Hierstad pick by assuming that they’ll pick an overslot high school player later in the first round. That turned out to be a bunch of baloney. This is Orioles ownership being cheap period. I’m starting to believe the Angelos sons are worse than Peter. At least PA ponied up money to sign draft picks like Wieters.

Did we not spend money on Adley? Some of the takes on this board are ridiculous.
