Today, he mentioned that the closer (Ecreg) was off drugs and alcohol and four years sober. Ok, happy for him, but do we need to hear about this in the 9th inning of a one-run game? We were all pretty deflated after Kimbrel blew it and I didn't care at all at that point about this guys' personal demons being exorcised. We were on the brink of losing but it was still a close, competitive game at that point. This may have been on MASN though that Ecreg's sobriety "had" to be discussed.

So is Brown just supposed to not speak when you’re feeling down about the O’s? Guy still has a job to do a game to discuss.

I was thinking of this on Friday as well. Elias needs to make a move before the Yankees do. Five months of a very shaky back end of the bullpen would be very detrimental to my health!

Not many teams are ready to start flipping assets in April. Even the “bad” teams are still figuring out what they’ve got.

I said this in the other thread but the O's are probably going to need to think outside the box here and have someone else pitch the 9th in a save situation every 1 out of 3 times to give Kimbrel a break.  He is never going to last a full year pitching this much.

DL Hall would have been a great guy for that but obviously that is a no go.   Cano I really don't trust in a 9th inning situation.

This was a reason I was surprised they got rid of Fuji after the season.  At least he threw near 100.  It seemed a shame that they gave up on him.

What about a Suarez?  I have a feeling he could do very well in that role.

Fuji has opened the season in Syracuse with 11 walks, 3 wild pitches and 8 earned in 5.1 innings. He has also hit two batters. I do not know if that one is salvageable.

These guys don’t accomplish what they have without being hyper competitive and driven.

If anything, Kimbrel just maintained what the overwhelming majority of athletes would maintain - that he feels fine. Guys do it all the time, in every sport. They honestly usually even believe it.

It’s on the staff of a team - be it coaches or medical guys - to identify that hey, maybe this guy is not, in fact, fine. I don’t think anyone involved today was making selfish decisions. Kimbrel thought he was a little off - as players sometimes are - and that he could get back into the groove, and his manager believed him.

Amazing how the pitchforks come out after a bad loss

Just imagine if they lose again, tomorrow. There’ll be people here unironically saying that we need to sell, and fire Hyde and Elias. Worst time of the year here is *any* time we play the Yankees.

Their motivation is that they are going to waste all of his arbitration years with a horrible team. If they trade him now, as I mentioned in another thread, they can get a lot of solid prospects who are several years away and who would be ready in time for a good team

Or they could wait 2-3 years and trade him for prospects who are nearly ready/surer bets. Why trade for A-Ball players now?

  7. Just now, eddie83 said:

I would deal him in a heartbeat for quality position players. Everyday kids like him get hurt.

So you’d be dealing a guy with 6 years of control for, at best, another guy with 6 years of control.

I’m not saying they wouldn’t trade him, I’m saying they’ve no real motivation - meaning you’d have to grossly overpay.

I don't see the similarity to Joe Buck at all.

I think when people say that it’s less about his calls and more about his voice and inflection? I think?

What's the story on Miller? Is he healthy enough to have a season like Bautista last year? Because if he's healthy and capable, I'm hopping in the bandwagon of Board Members here at the Hangout who wanted to try to trade for him. Depending on how expensive of a trade price Oakland is asking.

Oakland has 6 full years of control on this guy. What is their motivation?

I’m not gonna go into the numbers I’m gonna go into who they can’t put into left field right now. You basically need a centerfielder for a left and center. We have power hitters in the minors, not athletic outfielders. Cowser can play left. But where are all those other power hitters gonna play? Our best players are outfielders in a minors I think he’s regretting moving that wall back we don’t even have any good left handed pitchers to take advantage of it. I really feel moving that wall back was a dumb decision. What right handed power hitter in free agency would ever come here. But yeah, all we draft is left-handers.

Well if you offer them the right deal, any of them.

But if you're looking at a right-handed hitter that's probably going to sign a one-year, "prove it," deal... he's very unlikely to choose the Orioles, from a sheer park effect standpoint. That's about it, only person you've boxed out.

Would you also can someone who had a bad week to week and a half at work productivity-wise, despite their historic metrics over the last year being high?  Because this is literally the baseball equivalent of that.

I'm just hoping that whatever business we're talking about, it warrants the level of stress that the poster is attributing to it.

You sound like the type of person who doesn't care about the quality of their work and feels that failure is an acceptable status quo.

Not the type of person I'd ever hire in the real world.

Take a breather, champ. They play 162 games for a reason, and you're going to lose 50-60 of them even if you're one of the best teams in baseball. They certainly aren't happy when they lose, but these are professionals that have lost many, many times before in their athletic careers. And they'll lose many, many more. They'll deal with it and be back at it on Tuesday, trying to win ballgames the same as they do every time they go out.

There was more than enough evidence that just getting Kimbrel wasn't enough to fortify the Orioles bullpen in advance of this season. The pitching staff has been my biggest concern with the Bautista out and the uncertain status of Means and Bradish.

Truthfully, the bullpen is the team's greatest actual weakness. Yes, the bats are cold, but that'll come 'round.

But there are multiple guys in the bullpen right now that probably shouldn't be pitching in high-leverage situations for a defending division champ.

5-4. They are already at an inflection point in the season. You don't want to fall to .500 if you have Playoff & World Series aspirations.

I am disappointed with today's game, as well, but inferring that they're at a gut check moment heading into Game 10 at 5-4 is preposterous.

Yeah, he is really high strung and thinks he can do anything.   It’s a pro and a con at times.  On that throw it was definitely a con.  Wouldn’t have gotten him even if on target.

Should have put it in his pocket, for sure. Rough ending.

That said, the bullpen has been a mess, too.

  16. 10 minutes ago, CaptainRedbeard said:

Mariners certainly in the market for 3B now. If they don’t already have something lined up for Donaldson or Candelario, they very well could be a suitor for Westburg or Ortiz.

Considering how weak the FA market is for infielders, I’d be surprised if they moved Suarez without already having the replacement plan in place.

While Suarez has never replicated quite what he did in Cincy, he's been a big part of the M's the last two years. 150 games and 162 games played, respectively. It's a safe bet they've already got a replacement in mind, be it in FA or via trade.

How many teams have two #1 for the next 5 years like GRod and Bradish?

Neither of these players has established themselves as a No. 1 at this point in time. Both will very much be rotation pieces in 2024 and beyond, but neither has shown anything yet that suggests the organization should stand pat on starting pitching.

I say we have a problem. We need a 40 HR, .900 OPS, intimidating bat in the middle of the lineup - not just a bunch of streaky low .800’s OPS guys.

There were 10 guys in the league that posted a .900 OPS or better in 2023. Only four of them hit 40 homers. One of those guys was Marcell Ozuna, who basically rose from the grave after looking pretty much done. The other three were Ohtani, Matt Olson and Ronald Acuna.

So if you’re saying it’s sign Ohtani or the O’s are doomed, we’re in tough shape.

Further, the Braves made it just as far as the O’s despite having three of the four guys that meet your standards.

Yeah, wouldn't want to over-credit a team that 1) made the playoffs, 2) were well-prepared for the playoffs and 3) played great in the playoffs.

The teams that won the regular season should get all of the awards.

That just seems backwards to me that they don't want to over-credit the people who won what is everyone's goal to win.

If you win in the playoffs are get the team championship trophy, that’s what they’re for. These individual awards are supposed to be decided by the incredibly long campaign that leads to October.

  20. 1 hour ago, LookinUp said:

It's kind of crazy to think that Texas could legitimately contend for each of those awards. When Jung got injured, he was ahead of Gunnar for ROY. Of course, Gunnar came on really strong for the remainder of the year. Bochy is a wizard in the dugout. Perhaps the best in the sport right now. And their front office brought this team together with several splashy moves, supplemented with some really good young guys.

Remember that these are voted upon before the playoffs, so as not to over-credit anyone for getting hot in the tournament.

Looking at the regular season, Bochy and the Texas FO were not nearly as deserving as Hyde and Elias.

Jung... well, we'll never know if he'd have hung on to his lead for ROY.

Wonder if the Cardinals are glad they traded Adolis Garcia for cash considerations.

Even the Rangers have designated Garcia for assignment before. He just went through waivers and came back. Some guys are true surprises.
