But in Hyde's defense -- who should he have brought there in instead?  I guess maybe Baker but in only a one run game in Yankee Stadium he's certainly not ideal either.  A lot of relievers have been used lately.  Elias needs to construct a better bullpen next season and beyond.

If you're pulling Burnes, who was DEALING, you don't care about winning the game. If you don't care about winning the game, you bring in whoever needs to throw.

  2. I've been fired up every day since my divorce hearing on 11/12/19. The third best day of my life.

In all seriousness, life is good. Remember the 15 straight losing seasons?

They're not perfect, but today is a new day and yesterday doesn't matter. Westburg, Urias, et. al. have returned, our BP is stronger and we have our best 3 SP set to go this series. We're 6-4 versus them this year, including taking 2/3 last time we were in NY.

Pick your heads up a little bit.

Will they win the WS? No, I don't think so. But guess what??! They've got a chance!

I was at the game Sunday, and I'll be tuned in to every inning of the last 6 games.

    LFG.

We’ve lost our last 4 home playoff games dating back to the 2014 ALCS so I get some of the scar tissue. But having attended ALDS game 2 in both 2012 and 2014, those wins were absolutely magical and I’ll never forget them. The games can be expensive but if you can afford to get in the door, just bring your own food/drink and take it in from the pregame ceremonies to the last out. The experience is priceless.

I was at 3 of those 4 losses and I absolutely agree!!! I was also able to go to Games 1 and 2 of the 2014 ALDS which were both pure magic. Game 1 of the 2012 ALDS was also disappointing in person (long rain delay and then JJ blew the 9th), but I'll never forget that game after all the years of losing.

Good or bad - I'm all in regardless.

I got the email to renew my flex plan, but when I clicked on the plan details for 2025, you get a lot less for the same tier and even less for higher tiers.

I didn't not renew because of that and the overall deposit increase.

I guess I'll stick to seat geek and buy my food outside the stadium for 2025.

I renewed, however, I almost didn't for the same reasons you mentioned. I'll check it out for 2025 and reassess. I like OD and playoff games plus the flexibility, and my daughters and I have had a blast going to games this year, so I renewed more for them than I did the perks - which are definitely fewer.

??  That's what people mean when they say age matters. Not just based on a SSS snapshot of 1 year either.

It's not that Basallo's superhuman for 2024.  It's contextualizing what his 2024 stats mean when you account for some type of developmental curve based on age.  The odds may prove wrong for any specific data point (i.e. Basallo), but historic norms of development mean something too.

You were putting the burden of truth on those defending historic norms.  In reality, those who don't buy the norms should prove their point.  When that's not done, people pick nits...

Whatever man....lol. Big difference (at least to me) between broadly saying "age matters" and breaking it down like he did. Apples and cannon balls.

Basallo is currently ranked 69th in OPS at AA, which includes stats from people that are no longer at that level (including those that were demoted, promoted, etc.).

Average age of players above Basallo: 24

He's the youngest. But here's the breakdown of those above him (minimum 50 PA):

    • 20: 3
    • 21: 9
    • 22: 10
    • 23: 10
    • 24: 11
    • 25: 15
    • 26: 7
    • 27: 1
    • 28: 2

OPS by age group for everybody that qualifies in PA (at least 50): (ref: https://milbtracker.com/hitter-stats?levels[0]=AA&sort=ops&sort_direction=desc&org=&timeframe=2024&min_walk_percentage=0&max_strike_out_percentage=100&paginate=50&page=1)

    AGE OPS

    18 0.544
    19 0.800
    20 0.747
    21 0.734
    22 0.701
    23 0.677
    24 0.664
    25 0.682
    26 0.682
    27 0.620
    28 0.686
    29 0.652
    30 0.588
    31 0.676

    Breakdown by age:

    AGE COUNT PERCENTAGE
    18 1 0.22%
    19 1 0.22%
    20 7 1.56%
    21 31 6.92%
    22 55 12.28%
    23 83 18.53%
    24 86 19.20%
    25 88 19.64%
    26 51 11.38%
    27 21 4.69%
    28 7 1.56%
    29 11 2.46%
    30 3 0.67%
    31 3 0.67%

I mean, 90% of the league is aged 21-27 with 60% of the league being aged 23-25.

Basallo is putting up a comparable OPS to the upper echelon of hitters overall. And is OPSing better than *every age group* on average!

The kid is special. At age 20, Gunnar put up an 826 OPS across A, A+, AA. At age 18, Basallo put up a 953 OPS across A, A+, AA.

Wow! Now that's a fine break down! Much appreciated!!

I don’t actually think you want him to do good. I think you care more about him not being as good as everybody else in the world thinks he is and you being right. I’m sure the other 31 teams would love you to be in charge of the Orioles.

I want them ALL to do well. I have no ill will towards any Oriole or prospect. Lifelong fan and current plan holder. I want EVERYTHING to work out in our favor.

I know little to nothing about Basallo except for what I read online and what I can glean from his stats, which is obviously not the whole story/picture. Hence the original post full of questions about him.

Sorry you seem bothered by it all, but do you have any thoughts to share on Basallo? Or any responses to any of the 6 questions I asked in the original post? Or did you just get it all of your chest with that single, insightful comment?

Basallo is the youngest player in the Eastern League. He's 14th in OPS in the league and the guys ahead of him are 2 to 6 years older than he is. There's nothing special there. Nope.

If you are going to take the time to create graphics, why not take the time to check your claims?

The guys ahead of him are NOT 2-6 years older. Most of them are, sure, but not all of them. Took less than a minute to check.

Right, why not just do the prudent thing and look at the larger sample sizes? See the upward trend? It's pretty nice.

    Ugh. I DID. lol.

The only reason I even looked at 2 weeks in the first place was because another poster took issue with me referencing his 2024 stat line.

So many of you want to argue simply for the sake of arguing....gets pretty nutty.

So if we're being honest he had one bad week, right? The last 7 days are included in the last two weeks.

Fair enough. I simply looked at the most recent two weeks or 14 games I think (which aside from 1 game are quite underwhelming). I didn't look beyond that. Hopefully he heats back up. Two weeks is already a small enough sample size. I'm sure I could find another mediocre week but I don't really care to go tit for tat with endless cherry picking.

I don't get why Basallo is such a dividing player sometimes in terms of opinions.  I guess Mayo and Holliday are in AAA and Basallo is viewed as more of a long term toy that Elias is hoarding???  And if we don't trade Basallo, then we must not want to do enough to win a WS???

Is this what people are thinking?

I'm thinking we have 3 top 5-7 prospects in all of baseball, and that we have plenty to land us a Game 2/3 SP, and two high leverage relievers.

It seems to me that some are anti rental.  So the expectations are that Elias must not only when a WS this year, but then also have the starting rotation sorted out for 2025+ right now in this offseason.

The Royal Straight Flush.  Seams realistic.

I don't think anyone here disagrees.

    The last two weeks. Mmm

Don't get too excited, or confused. Obviously a sss, of course. Not saying it's the end all be all as a measurement, but he used cold weather as an excuse. So now, recently, in HOT June...after dozens of games to warm up, he's not doing any better. That's all.

  13. 32 minutes ago, sportsfan8703 said:

You have to consider how cold and rainy it was in April when looking at Basallo's numbers.  Heck, look at the O's MLB team numbers compared to May and June.  Terrible conditions in the mid atlantic in April.

So did you miss the post where I looked at the last 2 weeks? He's hitting .235 with 1 HR.

I'm literally giving you the guys that he shares a RC+ with from AA at age 19.  Read into what you will.  His numbers are comparable to Acuna, Soto, Holliday, and Caminero.

And I literally just compared/posted ACTUAL stats of all the guys you mentioned. Sorry I just don't blindly buy into the list. How dare I question anything.

We can stop the thread now guys....because RC+ says so! Basallo = Soto!

You aren’t taking into account what the offense is like in that league in any given year, how they compare to their peers, etc…again, you are just dismissing evidence.

We get it. You are willing to sell lower on him vs basically most of the fans, team and most around the game. That’s fine.

The rest of us have our reasons, which have been laid out to you but you don’t find them terribly compelling.

    Cool. So just go away.

But, if you're gonna hang around (call me crazy, but I bet you can't leave) do me a favor and stop putting words into my mouth.

I hear what you are saying and respect the perspective. But how much of this board have you read?

Surely you will (unfortunately) get shouted down by daring to suggest that here.

Most posters on this board consider that unthinkable and would rather retain all/every valued prospect no matter the cost/ramifications/consequences.

Lol. Yeah I know, hence the "don't kill me" comment.

I'm not sure if it's been posted or not but his RC+ at 19 in AA is up there with names like Soto, Acuna, Holliday, Camineiro.

I think we have arguably 3 of the top 5-7 prospects in baseball with Holliday, Mayo, and Basallo.

Soto played 8 games in AA and was in the majors at 19. Not sure that's a decent comp.

Acuna only spent 57 games in AA and his numbers were better. Not insanely better, but .326/.895 compared to .281/.800. Definitely better.

Camineiro's numbers were also significantly better. 20 hr's in 81 games. .309/.921. He was also in MLB at 19.

Holliday was only there for 36 games. .338/.928.

I think lists like that are part of the problem with ranking/comparing players. To me, looking at their AA numbers, Basallo does not quite belong to be mentioned in that group. But it's subjective I suppose.

When you consider that he was signed as a 16 year old with what I'm guessing would have been limited training and compare that to where he is now...I really would be hesitant to trade him.

Imagine where he would be if he had the resources that a lot of the young draftees from the States had. There's a lot of talent in the top 10, but he will be moving up the list as the season goes on.

I think that goes both ways though. He was playing pro ball under pro instruction at 16 when the US guys were playing HS varsity and still years away from pro instruction. The travel ball system in the US is extremely flawed. The kids live to play baseball in other countries and they DO have baseball resources available...how else could he have been on a MLB teams radar at 15 years old?

  19. Just now, Sports Guy said:

You are poo pooing everything people are saying. You are acting like his age doesn’t matter. It’s the whole basis for the discussion…his age along with his production.

If you go in the other Basallo thread(s) you will see the charts that have been posted about guys with his wRC+ at his age in the minors.  There aren’t many names on the list and many of them are elite stars.

What he is doing (ok he’s in a slump right now..everyone had them) and what he has done is not normal.

Ugh. No I'm not. Literally the last response I just made to someone else was "fair enough"

I'm simply asking for more substance than "he's 19 and in AA"

And "not normal" isn't saying much. Slightly above average could be considered not normal. He's doing very well for his age, but let's not act like he's putting up superhuman numbers.

  20. 20 minutes ago, Sports Guy said:

There is a lot wrong with what you are saying but you need to consider that he missed most of ST and April was essentially his ST, so it has hurt his overall numbers but he has been on a tear since then.

Sheesh. I literally posted his actual 2024 stats. If you're going to make a claim, back it up. What exactly was wrong? You've posted nothing but opinions in every response.

As I said in the OP, "But why exactly?"

So again, what exactly was wrong?

"but he has been on a tear since then"

    He's 12-51 in the last 14-15 games with a single dinger. That's a whopping .235.

    Where's the tear?

  21. 10 minutes ago, Sports Guy said:

Why use player ages?  Because those are his peers. Those are guys that are physically and mentally more mature. To dominate them at a far younger age is something you rarely see. Again, we have seen the lists on here of his stats at age 19 and how they compare to all time and current great players.

    Age is huge in this.

And yes, those guys were there at young ages too…and they are all special elite level talents. That’s what Elias has built.

He's in AA at a young age and doing well, but he's not dominating. He's just not.

  22. 10 minutes ago, Otter said:

He's not just a "little young" for AA, he's very young for AA and especially for the fact he made it to AA last year.  He has great offensive numbers, elite power, and still has much more offensive upside.  In addition, he has a great arm and most scouting reports think he can stick at a premium position.  This makes him an elite prospect.  Whether or not he's untouchable....well, the only opinion that matters in that respect is Elias'...

Personally, I'd have to get back a #2 or #3 starter with more than one year team control to trade him.

    "He has great offensive numbers"

Does he? He's at .281/.800 OPS right now with 11 home runs and a whopping 24xbh's. That's not great. How is that elite power? Elite potential maybe, but his actual numbers this year are not elite or great.
