  1. Palmer and Ben are #1.  I don't get the KB ire but I do think he is somewhat generic but good which works when Palmer and/or Ben are on.  I don't know how many agree but Thorne/Palmer is still one of my favorites - incredibly entertaining to the point that my wife would listen (only while doing other things).

Also, I remember when Melanie (radio) received pretty bad reviews here towards the beginning of the season and I was one of them.  I have listened recently and believe she has improved.  That is a tough job but I assume she has made a total effort to grow.

  2. Every Orioles fan should read this, especially those that are younger.  1969 was the first year I was old enough to remember an O's WS.  We emulated every Oriole in different ways, including a friend who wasn't the best hitter - he was Mark Belanger.  I tried Palmer's leg kick (an experiment that didn't last too long - bit longer than Luis Tiant's wind-up :)Cueller's screwball (albeit right handed). But, who didn't want to play like Brooks.  We used to play a "ground ball" game that was continuous infield for hours - that was fun for us.

Roy, I was anticipating your tribute as it always provides the human aspect and what a great man/person Brooks is.  Getting older is what it is. Some will say 86 is "ok". But, some small part of his legacy is in the pure joy he brought to young kids who wanted to play ball his way.

  3. Having one of my first baseball heroes pass is sad.  I "met" him once when I was about 10.  He signed an autograph and asked me if I played.  Larger than life with a heart that matched.  I know @Roy Firestone will bless us all with his thoughtful tributes and insight from one who knew Brooks and will eloquently make us both appreciate and miss Brooks.

My dad is from Rochester and that’s how me and my brothers started following the Orioles. The ‘70 series against the Reds is etched in my memory. In those days there World Series was played at day time and pops let me miss school to watch a game. He wrote a note for me to take to the nuns the next day explaining I needed to experience the great American cultural pastime of baseball. Needless to say, they weren’t having any.

My first was the 1969 series and watching on the auditorium stage.  I loved the day games

There are LOTS of O’s fans still around Rochester. My wife is from there and we visit 3-4 times a year. I always wear my O’s gear and ALWAYS have older folks tell me they’re O’s fans and want to talk baseball.

Yes... I try to get home as much as possible (not often any longer) but I am seeing a lot of Yankees (ughhhh) there now... Probably a combination of O's ditching and bandwagon maybe.

Let me first apologize to those not old enough to have experienced the following experiences from the 70's, since these might only apply to those of us who are 50+......did anyone else on here enjoy these??

    1. The Oriole bird comic drawings on the front page of the Sunpaper the morning after every game, capturing the result of the game and either showing the cartoon Bird beating up the other team, or getting somehow destroyed by them depending on the outcome of the previous day's game.

    2. The line scores on the front page of sports section the morning after a west coast game, where the first 4 or 5 innings were in Sunpaper print font, and the last few innings and game totals were literally written in before the paper was printed.

    3. The weekly Sporting News Magazine filled with box scores from the entire week.  I'm an accountant. in real life.....and back then, I lived for that stuff.

    4. The Baseball crossword puzzles in the Baseball Digest......

Anyone remember those days??  Any others people would like to add???

Growing up in Rochester I didn't get the Sun but followed the O's, my favorite team, having seen many of the team coming through the Rochester Red Wings.  Of course, back then, there was that annual O's visit that you could not miss.

I forgot the West Coast games.  They rarely made it to the paper at all. I was annoyed with only the first few innings being in there but never remember it being some big tragic situation as I could imagine a few minutes would be these days, but I digress.

Baseball probably helped me more with math than many classes. My skills from spending hours with stats still serve me well decades later.

    Thanks for sharing!

I wouldn’t do that, but if one of our starters struggles in the next two games, I would absolutely throw Flaherty out there and let him finish the game, even if it takes him 200 pitches.

When  I first read this I thought "nah, you're just being ridiculous" but my next thought was... hmmm 🤔 that may be a stroke of genius

  8. Yes on Jones and Roberts.  But they were for 6 and 4 years respectively and not under JA's reign.  We are talking much longer with an owner who, IMO, does everything possible to please Dad.  In a weird way, I saw some Angelos in the show "Succession."  What bothers me is the "It's going to be tough" BS starting. It appeared to me that he was being proactive and setting up later excuses.

I believe he should ask his intelligent baseball people to tell him what an extension would look like, the risks, etc., and start a discussion with decent numbers.  If it doesn't work ok you can plan accordingly but just cut the excuses now.  People complain about Boras.  Well, if he just sat back, and listened to what JA says it would be malpractice not to discuss options with his client that have a larger chance of happening.  Yes, a few years down the road but would you trust JA?

I kind of don’t either but either Ortiz or Westburg basically have to be dealt. There is a real question as to which one is the better player long term.

I think making one a part time player for us is short changing their value, so trading them to bring back a high level guy (whether it be Robert or a pitcher) is a better way to go.

    I'd go for a pitcher

Not an apologist here.  His performance hasn't been good but I don't know how anyone can make any informed statements about his attitude and it being a cancer on the team.  There haven't been any reports about that.

guilty here... interviews and other arbitrary things for feeling that way. Sometimes, emotions take the place of common sense.

I liked the Flaherty trade.  I was wrong.   I don’t know that there is room for him to stay on the club.

I don't think you were wrong to like it - luckily it was not more than a minor move. I do agree that there just may not be room for him.

I'll be honest, I wasn't thrilled with Flaherty being the only pitcher acquired but the facts are the facts.

We do not know what the Orioles offered or who they went after, and I'm certainly not taking up for Angelos because for all I know he would not let Elias take on the contracts of Scherzer, Verlander or Montgomery even if the prospects were agreed upon.

We also don't know how the young rotation will hold up in the playoffs. So if I had my druthers, I would feel better with the Orioles having any of them instead of Flaherty in starting rotation right now.

But saying all of that, the Orioles have been better than every one of the team that were mentioned and while all three of those guys have out performed Flaherty so far, the records of the teams are what they are since the trad deadline.

Now I will admit, when the playoff starts, that's when we'll know whether Elias' conservative approach (whether his decision or Angelos') at the trade deadline worked or not.

My most emotional based on no facts or knowledge opinion his interviews, regardless of the outcome, are a downer.  I mean, he is in his late 20's so maybe he is a cantankerous old man but it is almost like there is not much inspiration left.  That is the most ridiculous thought I could write... right?

I really have no issue going with young guys.  It will make it more exciting, stressful and (hopefully not) upsetting.

  13. It will be fascinating to see how this winter plays out.  Yes, I agree that there is too much young talent for the number of positions in the infield. I am one who thinks the outfield is in pretty darn good shape and you never have enough pitching.  There is definite movable pieces that are a bit older or not resigned.  My only concern is that if there is decent movement which one(s) will we regret in hindsight (see ERod, Hader, etc.)  What an incredible reason for concern.  Either way, let's win the World Series so we can start a great conversation.

Man, if we had decent ownership.....

Bradish's pedestrian 13.7 in zone Whiff is probably what holds him back a bit when you start talking TOR. Both his slider and curveball are plus offerings, but his fastball is a well below average offering because of the lack of movement both vertically and horizontally and why he's throwing that more effective sinker more. His change has been an ok pitch for him because he's able to land it more often than not and surprise guys with it since he only throws it less than 10% of the time.

His 33 percentile chase percentage means he doesn't garner a ton of chase, but when they do swing out of zone, he gets a top 14 (among major league starters) WHIFF rate of  53.9%. Without missing a ton of bats in the zone though, he's working off of soft contact which mostly comes from his breaking balls.

To me, Grayson Rodriguez is the guy with TOR potential while Bradish to me is a solid #2 or #3 guy.

It has been so long since we actually had a real #1 outside of numbers I am not even sure what the definition is.  I have seen other teams' true #1's pitch against us but not here.  Back in my day of 4-starters an ace was the guy you thought would stop the losing streak at 3.  The guy the other team did not want to face. I really can't remember that feeling since Mussina.
