The Orioles are stocking the farm system so that they will not have to pay players past their prime.  Those players will simply be pushed out and replaced by younger cheaper players.  Longer term deals to guys over 30 will not be a thing.

    How do you figure?

We had an empty farm system with no core players at the MLB level. Them "stocking" the farm system is how you rebuild. Of course we're not going to be LAD handing out 500M  contracts, but we definitely aren't going to be TB/OAK that just let's every guy worth a pay day walk out the door if guys show they're worth it.

    Re: Alberto.

He is one of the better players on a team that is at best mediocre. Why would we want to extend him? Isn’t Gunnar our future second baseman? Or whichever of Grenier/Hall can’t handle SS?
As the team improves, individual players remain the same. If he’s really going to be good enough to help a contending team, he’s more valuable to us as a trade piece, And if he keeps this up, I would be surprised if he finishes the season with us. Assuming the season finishes the season.

Meanwhile I am enjoying him very much and I also enjoy Ruiz and the other improving players.

You're not going to have a team full of top end players at every positon. He looks like he could be a quality player. Gunnar isn't going to be ready for several year, and who knows if he even works out. Prospects are super volatile.

If Alberto can continue to be an average to slightly above average or better player I'd love for him to be a long term piece until he gets pushed out.

I added a thread to discuss...rant about it.

Why does it have to be PTBNLs? With Velazquez fine ...but Bleier is a valuable piece imo

I don't need to rant about it. Middle relievers, while Bleier has value, isn't worth losing sleep over. It's also evident that we are in a pandemic and the way traded used to go down aren't the same. So who knows what level a player a PTBNL will be.

It will surprise me if they do.  Course, he has to clear waivers in the National league and with Detroit.... and not be traded.   A lot of hurdles.

    That's a whole different argument.

Point being, if Elias likes the idea of him as a potential low cost/high reward piece I'm sure he'll put in a claim/take a hard look.

You are stretching so far to prove something that doesn't exist.

    What?

As I've said, if you seriously think these comps that draft analysts are throwing out means they think they'll be who they're referencing I'm not sure what to say...they clearly aren't.

They just try to give comparable notable players the general fans know about that have a similar style of game+build. You really think Callis is saying Baumler is gonna be Greinke?

Compare him to someone more realistic.  Greinke was drafted out of high school number 6 overall.  So he is surely a bad comparison. I mean I am not sure why you are arguing this point.   I have never heard a guy drafted in the fifth round compared to a Hall of Fame type player who was drafted that high out of high school.

Like I said, I think you're missing the point. He's far from the only player taken that gets comparisons to elite level players while not being a top 10 pick.

Mayo was compared to Austin Riley who is a top end prospect in baseball due to strengths/build. That's all these are. I think you're taking the word comparison to literally.

Then why the comparison.  If you are saying for example that a guy the Ravens drafted in  the fifth round was a more athletic Ray Lewis people would laugh at you.  This is a laughable comparison.  A guy who is a more athletic Greinke wouldn't last until the 5th round.  I am not sure why you can't understand this.

Because that's how draft prospects work and people find comparing similar skillsets/frames etc. to players that have made it?

We see it all across sports. That never means when those comparisons are made they "expect" said player to turn exactly into them.

Ok, dude. He was a steal based on the Orioles perspective.  Lets be clear about that, dude!  It's possible that no other team considered him a steal. Under your definition of a "steal"  there are probably 29 other teams claiming they got steals in this draft. So there, dude.  Also, I don't carw how stupid you sound dude. I'm still willing to hear you out.  Cool!

How stupid I sound? You just said they gave him the slot amount for close to a Comp pick/high 2nd round amount and are going off on a tangent because someone compared him to getting "another 1st round pick".

Maybe don't get so caught up in semantics and realize guys like him fall who have high asking prices and age+tool wise, for where we landed him, it is a steal?

    But go off.

  9. 5 minutes ago, RZNJ said:

So, the slot amount for the #42 pick in the draft was 1.77M.  Theoretically,  any team who thought this kid was a 1st round talent would have just picked him which leads me to believe that most teams had him rated as a second round talent or lower. I'm not saying he's not a great pic. I'm just saying that calling him a 1st round talent is the company line.

    No one cares dude.

After the top 10-12 picks all MLB teams value on players is completely different than other teams. The "big board" media outlets aren't true value either. The MLB draft even more so than any other sport is a complete crapshoot. So even if he did get the slot amount of a 1st rounder it wouldn't mean any more or less as to his chances hitting. He was still a steal and wouldn't be an Oriole if we wouldn't have went underslot early.

Yeah, I don't get the Helton comparison at all. Helton's power was largely due to Coor's Field. If he had played anywhere else I think I think he would have more of a .300 / 20 HR type of player. Also, Helton was a gold glover at his position. I don't think anyone is projecting that for Kjerstad. Schwarber's a much better comp IMO.

He has better foot speed and is a better defender than Schwarber, even if that's not his calling card.

Schwarber offensively would be a beast if he could hit LHP, so I'll happily take the bat profile.

And that's fine if they did.  They say they will have him graded higher.  But I really don't believe that.  Do you?

    I don't, no.

I do believe that they had him higher than you may view him/a lot of draftniks though. Pair that with a very comfortable $ # they probably have with him that a couple others likely wouldn't take and...
