Elias and Sig obviously love their prospects. With that said, they actually have experience in trading for Verlander (thought to be in decline at the time) and going on to win the World Series. Even with it being six years later, if they determine that he's worth acquiring, with how protective they are of their prospects, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Verlander is not AS dominant as he was, but he'd still be leaps and bounds ahead of anyone else we'd run out in Game 1 of any playoff series IMO.

Maybe I'm crazy but I think the bigger issue would be prospect cost versus money. Mets will eat a fair amount of the money if the prospect haul is worth it. Ideally they'd meet in the middle and not move anyone higher than Norby, and take on the needed salary to get that deal done? I don't think Norby would be the only piece of course but I'd hope that he'd be the top piece, but that may be just as unrealistic as these Mets fans predicting Holliday + Kjerstad + Mayo coming back for all I know.

True, but he's not the only one linking more teams than Houston/LA to Verlander. Rosenthal just posted his update for The Athletic this morning: - O's on the periphery of talks with the Mets regarding Verlander (listed after Houston/LAD) - Thought to be linked to Lorenzen, but their exact pitching targets are unclear - MLB watching the Orioles with considerable interest - Tigers likely holding out until the last minute for best and final offers on their pitchers

I still can’t believe they’re in on Verlander. It would make more sense to me that this is being leaked to give them additional leverage with Detroit, although they’ve supposedly avoided leaks in the past. I’m guessing they have the best offer on the table for whoever they prefer between ERod or Lorenzen, but it’s not as good a return as Montgomery got so Detroit is waiting until the clock runs down. Maybe a little risky given how badly they need a starter but we’ll see. Just a hunch.

But until they make “that move”, whether it’s a trade or FA acquisition, I don’t know that we can continue to give them the benefit of the doubt. I understood the trades last year, and could even see the logic of not spending high on last years FA pitchers. But with their current league leading record and a glaring hole in the rotation, there’s really no excuse to not bring in a difference maker with their abundance of resources.
