  1. Gametime: 7:05 pm Forecast: 64 degrees, mostly sunny Promotion: Autism Acceptance Night; former Orioles' beatwriter and official scorer Jim Henneman is throwing out the first pitch Roster Move: Jackson Holliday optioned to Norfolk; Ryan McKenna recalled from Norfolk. To make room for McKenna on the 40 man roster, Daniel Banuelos (who had been in Norfolk) is DFA'd. 2. Perhaps he's saying that a mental reset / change of scenery can be helpful to someone. Perhaps he's saying that it is easier to work on mechanical changes in an environment where the games don't "count" as much and you aren't feeling like you are letting your teammates down if you struggle. Maybe development doesn't completely trump winning at AAA, but the ratio of the importance of the two is skewed very differently than it is at the big league level. There's a luxury of being able to experiment and tinker with things at AAA without any pressure that if something doesn't work, or takes a long time to work, you will be sent down.
  3. Yep. To do that, though, they pretty much would have had to have decided before Sunday's game in KC, because right afterwards the team flew from KC to California, and there would be no sense in Holliday making that flight and then flying to Norfolk. And someone (travelling secretary) would have to arrange a flight from KC to Norfolk for Holliday. So those wheels would have had to go into motion Saturday night at the latest, and maybe they weren't ready to pull the trigger that soon. Making a guy fly by himself from KC to Norfolk while the rest of the team celebrates a win and flies in the other direciton can't be fun. I remember when a lot of people felt it was classless that the Mets fired manager Willie Randolph in the middle of a West Coast trip.

    Statistical oddities

Joey Gallo has 40 strikeouts and 1 single so far this year.
  5. If they lose tonight and get 4-game-swept by the Yankees, I would be annoyed if they show up here and suddently start acting competitively. I'd really like to see them get a W in NY tonight, somehow.
  6. A few ideas: McKenna has been around for a long time, Roch probably knows him pretty well. Maybe he likes the guy. It is a fact that Hyde (and likely Elias too) like to have a good mix of RH and LH bats, and take LH/RH splits very seriously. We see it in their lineups, and in player moves, all the time. It is clear based on the multitude of comments that come out each time a lineup is posted, that Hyde/Elias put a lot more stock in LH/RH splits than the majority of fans here do. Whether you agree with them or not, the bottom line is it DOES matter to THEM, a lot. And with Hays down, and now Burdick gone, our MLB/AAA pool of potential outfielders is VERY lefthanded, which means that McKenna probably has more value to them than he does in most our minds. And Roch is just reflecting that value in his blog. (When Hays got hurt, I wasn't 100% sure his replacement was going to be Kjerstad, I thought there was a chance, based on past behavior of Elias/Hyde, that it could be McKenna to get another RH bat in the mix). Perhaps Cowser has, or will, convince them that he can be an adequate backup CF if something happens to Mullins. I don't know if that has happened yet. But with Hays out, and Mateo so far not passing the eye test as a CF, it's possible that McKenna is still the #1 answer if something were to happen to Cedric. Which gives him more significance than some other 4A guy who can be DFA'd 3 times in a season like Banuelos and pass through waivers or be easily replaced.
  7. Wednesday: 6/9, 33 rarity points, 6 Orioles (the most possible: no Milwaukee 300 HR hitter hit for the Orioles, and obviously no single team player for Cleveland or Washington played for the Orioles). Jesse Orosco 0.9%, Ken Singleton 0.5%, Eddie Murray 1% Rick Dempsey 0.1%, Jeffrey Hammonds 0.2%, Hank Aaron 18% Tyler Freeman 0.6%, Victor Robles 4%, Cal Ripken 8%
  8. I asked in the game thread, was trying to remember. Is that the first ever walkoff review delayed-celebration win in Orioles history?
  9. Is that the first delayed celebration / victory ending on a challenge in Orioles history?
  10. We got Yenny for the 8th and Kimbrel for the 9th. Probably Coulombe for the 7th. I still feel really good, though it would have been nice to get two thirds scoreless out of Webb but he failed.
  11. I wonder if McCann put on his catcher's gear after batting and getting the hit and coming around to score, and now there's a possibility he might have to take it off and hit again this inning?
  12. It says "Injury Delay" after the Santander HBP. What part of the body? How bad does it look?
