Here’s a possibility for a trade. The Braves just signed Manny Pina two a two year deal and they already have Travis D’Arnaud under contract for two years as well. So, it appears their 23-year old backup William (I’m not Wilson) Contreras is expendable. He played 52 games last year, basically at replacement level but he was a rookie and maybe has room to grow, and probably wouldn’t cost much. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/contrwi02.shtml
Oh wow. I missed this post - I had the exact same idea. Great minds... well. Anyway, Langaliers (the 2nd catcher picked in the Adley draft) is likely the Braves catcher of the future - ahead of Contreras.

Not a free agent, but I'd look to make a trade for William Contreras of the Braves. He's hit real well in AAA but has had trouble in multiple tries in the majors. Seems like he's being passed over in the Braves organization - as Shae Langaliers is now their likely catcher of the future, and they extended d/Arnaud for 2 more years and signed Manny Pina to a 2/8 contract to be their backup. And the Braves are always looking for relievers. I know ideally you'd want a veteran to team with Adley, but Adley's so mature for a soon to be rookie, that going young with the #2 catcher might work out.

Yes, as long as he's over the vertigo and eye issues. As someone who's had vertigo, that's a scary problem.

Great stuff - particularly about De Los Santos - fascinating combo of OBP, potential power, and intriguing defensively as a 3rd baseman.

Baseball Prospectus had him 79th before the 2019 season. He's never hit well at any level, but he's just 24, so probably worth more of a look than some on the O's 40 man roster.

It’s weird that people are viewing this as an attack or macabre. I’m sure nobody thinks they’re all gonna be major leaguers with successful careers.
I would/will not predict that anyone specifically of the 9 will not be successful major leaguers.

Why would I want to bet against any of them? Or even thing that way.
None is a perfectly fine answer, and I'll go with it.

I like his chances - a 6'2 guy with speed who got an OBP of .380ish - if he can add some strength to the lanky frame. He obviously has to work hard this offseason.

Gotta think that Neustrom, Haskin, and Watson will be 3 of the last 4 in the top 30. Mundy got hurt but it was late, still it stole a bit of his thunder. It’s a good thing that there are legit prospects to still dip down into the DSL for as well.
Haskin is the one that I'm surprised isn't in the top 26. He's shown very good ability to get on base, and is young enough at 22 to add more muscle on his 6'2 frame and improve on his XBH's.

He basically ditched the curveball and went slider heavy late in the year.
Do you think his curveball was a good pitch for him before going to AAA? Apologies if you've already spoken to that.

Will dollars even be the official currency by then?
The O's will run on crypt O currency.

That's an intimidating dude. Batters hit .126 against him last season at the 3 levels combined, and he's only given up 6 homers in him minor league career. Mr. Bat Misser. Glad he's on our side.

Seems a lot like Ramon Urias - might become a little better offensively. I think he and Ortiz might get promoted to Baltimore quicker than some of their more heralded infield prospects.
-
And remember, 2023 could be the debuts for Heston and Cowser in the Baltimore OF.

Yeah, I don't see it either. I would have personally stocked their vending machine for three years to get that deal done! But if they're open to dealing Meyer in a Mullins trade, I think I'd have to work really hard to find a combination of players that works.
Because our system appears to be so deep, I think we can sweeten the pot to make a Mullns trade get us quite a haul of top pitching prospects. But I could be wrong.

The hope is he can be a poor man’s Kyle Schwarber after Mancini and Santander are traded. He’s obviously slated for a reserve role until then. However, after that I think he has a chance to blossom until Stowers and Neustrom are ready?
Destitute man's Schwarber - at best.

Maybe they meant Baumler's a better athlete than Luke Greinke; Zack's brother. Luke was a 12th round pick of the Yankees in 2008, but injuries quickly ended his career... in baseball. Yeah, they probably meant Luke.
-
To give an idea of how athletic Greinke is, he's won 6 GG's and 2 Silver Sluggers. If I remember right, he was used as a pinch-hitter in one of this year's WS's games - and got a hit - sharply to the opposite field. He had 8 XBH's in 2019, 3 steals in 2018. Oh, and he can pitch.

I can't NOT keep picking Bradish at this point... lol.
Ha, this is my 3rd straight time picking him.

That's the first I've heard that his defense is elite. I think the strikeout to walk ratio is a big red flag with Watson though I think he's still viewed as a possible fourth outfielder.
Yeah, I have Hudson Haskin ahead of Watson.
-
I like both of these picks - even though I got them wrong. I have to admit - Mayo doing so well probably affected my view of Baumler - as did the fact that Baumler was one of the few pitchers they really seemed to like.
-
I went with Vavra and Bradish for the 2nd straight time. I thought I was wrong then. Now, I think there's a much better chance I'm right - but still not feeling confident, because my gut says Baumler is the next best prospect. .

There is a little bit to this. I'm not sure I would say "discouraged," but as guys get closer it's easier to evaluate and access what they will be at the major league level. It's pretty obvious at this point that I have doubts have Bradish and Baumann will stick as starters since they have pitched at high levels than Rom and Pinto.
I value potential starters more than guys I feel will end up being relievers. If I feel a guy has a chance to be an everyday guy, I'd rather him in my system then a guy who is probably a 40 to 45 level player. Now these guys like Basallo and Hernandez may flame out and not even become 40-45 level players, but in my mind, there's a lot more 40 to 45 level players available which makes them less valuable than a guy who could be a regular or better.
Do I feel super great about putting guys on this list this high when I've never seen them play a game? No, but sometimes you have to look at the entire package and give some trust into the scouts who thought they were worth the money they got and the scouts who have seen this since.
Again, I'm not saying anyone else is wrong if they have these guys lower, but I will say if I thought there were every day guys at high levels they would be ahead of them.
Saying that, I still have a very generic look at some of the 2021 draft picks and don't feel great about evaluations until after they get a full season under their belts.
But that's what makes this process interesting to me.
That's gotta be the hardest thing about evaluating teenage players - weighing the ceiling vs most likely outcome.
As far as starters vs relievers, yes starters are more valuable, but the difference gets smaller every year. When you find a guy who can be a dominant reliever, I think that's sometimes more valuable than a 4th or 5th starter. But I get that finding starters is much harder than finding relievers - and that has to fit in the equation.

Lol, I went with Bauman and Vavra. Why not?
It sounds like Bauman isn't likely to stay a starter in the bigs. But then again, I don't know if Bradish is either.
Clint Frazier?

Frazier is a former 5th pick in the draft, Baseball Prospectus had him as baseball's 16th best prospect in 2017. He's consistently OPS'd in the .800's in the minors and is regarded as a very good defensive OFer. He's been held back because of a significant neurological problem that's caused vision problems and vertigo. Having just turned 27, he has some potential. The key for him appears to be overcoming the neurological problem. He may not make it, but he's a much more interesting choice than Stewart, imo.
