That's an intruiging one.  What about Eddie Rosario as well?  He made $8 mil on a 1 year deal.  Not sure he can play center, but Hays probably can, and then we could trade Mullins for a decent haul on the pitching side.  Or Mancini/Santander.

Rosario must be on cloud 9 right now.  He's not regarded as a good defensive OFer, but he he made a great catch in the 1st inning last night - preventing extra bases for Tre Turner - one of the Dodgers soon to be free agents.  He's a pure hitter - though he is prone to bad streaks and did not play well with Cleveland.  Rosario's walk-off liner went 105 MPH and Cory Seager (another soon to be free agent) understandably could not handle it.

  2. 25 - Jake Meyers, Cody Bellinger

I'd be interested to hear folks' thoughts on Bellinger.  In 2019, he was beyond great - he was the MVP - an absolute phenom - and was also an outstanding defensive OFer.  Then, last year slipped to a .789 OPS, but it was a short season - so not a huge deal.  This year - a .542 OPS and a series of injuries.  And he's almost a year younger than Mullins.  He's under team control for 2 more years, but already made 16.1 million this season.  With Mullins not even eligible for arbitration until after next season and making next to nothing - and the Dodgers having so many free agents, it'd be a coup for them to get Mullins - allowing them to keep more of their free agents.  A Mullins for Bellinger plus prospects trade would have been unthinkable even a year ago, but now...?

  3. The Braves OF prospects - Pache, Waters, and Harris - are all interesting CF prospects that had somewhat disappointing  years - though given their young ages - are still quality prospects.  Pache is the defensive phenom of the group, while Harris and Waters still could stick at CF.  Being honest (I'm a Braves fan), despite all that talent, I don't think any of them are sure things to become better than average MLBers.  I think Harris has the best upside of them.  Re Braves non-pitching prospects, I think Langeliers (catcher) and SS Vaughn Grissom are both better prospects than the 3 OFers.

Oh what a world we live in.

If he’s injury prone, he will make less money than if he has merely been subject to the Vast Incompetence Network that is the Baltimore Orioles: Because then, of course, the new-and Competent- team can easily fix the problems and Hunter will be once again elite… and very wealthy.

My wife says I’m naïve because I’m too honest, and I don’t see all the potential for evil in the world. Let me tell you, I am in the violin business, and if it can be seen, I have seen it. So with the greatest respect for you, I must lean towards agreement with @Ruzious and  @Aristotelian

On the other hand, Harvey was talking to Roch. Despite his failings as a writer, Roch has enough experience to clarify Harvey’s meaning, And as a management employee, it is his job not to share information that is controversial or would make the organization look bad.

Unless he’s really falling down on the job, he would not have shared this information unless he was confident it was non-controversial, So that tilts the scales back towards Frobby.

On the other hand,he’s not a very perceptive writer, so he may not have noticed, which is at least a penny on the scale in the other direction.

oh well… Nothing else to talk about.

    How about them Dodgers??

The Dodgers cheated.  Go Braves!  :)

Actually, it was an amazingly bad call for the last play - earning Scherzer the save - which he looked to be ecstatic to take - can't blame him - but the 1st base ump somehow called an obvious check swing a swing to end the game - and it was 2-1.  It's like some of these umps are asking to be replaced by machines.  Did I digress there?

Sorry, I don’t see it that way.   It’s not unusual for someone to have a gym-related injury from doing an entirely appropriate exercise.

No need to reply, because I’m sure you aren’t going to change your minds.   We just have different ways of looking at the world.

Just one more point.  I don't disagree with what you said there, but I'm not sure it's on point for this discussion.  He obviously knew he was talking to a reporter, and I think he knew the way many (if not most) people would interpret - rightly or wrongly - what he said.

  6. 3 minutes ago, Frobby said:

To be clear, he didn’t.   He said he thought the oblique injury might have come from a new exercise he tried.   He never blamed anyone, never said a word about anyone on the staff.   Never said anyone did anything wrong.   The thread title is a little misleading, because Harvey didn’t make any comments about the strength and conditioning staff.

It's interesting how people can read the same thing and come up to completely different conclusions.  I couldn't disagree with your conclusion more.

Well, Elias DID fire two guys in the strength and conditioning department last week.   And in addition to Harvey's perhaps misinterpreted comments, we also heard that Zimmerman's injury may have been related to weight room activities.

So putting 2 and 2 and 2 together MIGHT come up with 6 here, but it's all speculative I agree.

And really no remedial addition is necessary.  He essentially said the injury was caused by the exercises they had him do - and I assume he said this to Roch - knowing that it was going to be publicly reported. That's the dictionary definition of throwing someone under the bus.

A good coach never forces, only guides and suggests and monitors.
I don’t remember whether Arietta was forced to throw a particular pitch or was denied the use of a pitch, but restrictive coaching was also a problem for him.

Its difficult to identify specific problems because a given pitcher has different needs, but stories like this indicate that there is no underlying philosophy of guidance: rather there is one of dogmatism and forcing square into round and “I know you better than you know you.”

In my field, even experienced colleagues tend to suffer from this odd arrogance, and I have often wondered if the coaching staff needs to change their concepts of how best to coach.

I mean... your general observation might make some sense, but it seems you're jumping to conclusions about the Orioles' situation.  Comparing Arietta's situation to Harvey's doesn't make any sense to me.

  9. Lee seems significantly better than Carter Young - both offensively and defensively.  And a lot of mocks have Young ahead of Lee.  I expect that will change - if it hasn't already. Young would be a nightmare pick for the O's, imo - strikes out way too much and might not stay in the infield - much less SS.

  10. Yeah, we're not going to get anything of value now for Santander.  For some reason, teams won't want the rejects of the worst team in baseball.  I'd rather pass on getting scraps for him and see if he can get himself healthy for a season - even if that's not likely to happen.  And it's not as if he's blocking anyone for the moment - especially if they don't keep Mancini.  They'll find a place for Stowers when they think he's ready.

Was going through some of weams' things and ran across these three stray pics with the date Feb 1986 on the back.

The (?) signed balls are kept in the "shrine" next to a more recent photo of the three of them decades later.

How fun is this? A fan for life.

That last picture... is as good as it gets.  Words can't do it justice.

The young Cal pictures - maybe I'm seeing things, but if you put bangs on him, he looks like a young John Lennon.  Eddie Murray still looks like a star.

What makes me feel the best is the three level comment. He could’ve gushed and not said that. The question is are those three levels Aberdeen, Bowie, and Norfolk?  He could be on the Stowers trajectory.

Well, he better not start next season below Aberdeen.  That would be disturbing.  Frankly, I'd hope they'd start him in Bowie next season.  Remember, if you believe Blood, the O's had him ranked as the top prospect in the country, so they should move him up very quickly.

I still think Galvis is a no brainer bring back. If he’s too rich for us then we bring in Iglesias.  Also, it gives a vet presence to a tool at guy like Mateo.  We need someone to hold down the fort until Westburg and Gunnar are ready in 2023.

I think it might end up being Ortiz at SS in 2023 - since we don't know if Westburg or Gunnar will stick at SS.

  14. One thing that seems interesting watching what the Braves have decided on in these short series - going with pitchers that throw hard.  The Braves didn't even activate Richard Rodriquez - who was effective in getting batters out but had a very low K rate.  Their relivers they're using aren't great, but they generally hit 97 MPH and have good sliders (or 1 other good breaking pitch), and so far - that's been effective - as their pen hasn't given up a run in the 1st 3 games.

As far as starters, it's all about having 3 guys you can rely on (Morton, Fried and Anderson) who throw hard.  Even if Soroka was healthy, he might be just their 4th starter in the playoffs, because he doesn't throw as hard as the other 3.  I think they're excited to go with Ynoa as their 4th starter because he's another guy who throws 96-97 - even though he is wet behind the ears.

Do you think we take a look at Mike Foltynewicz? He was in the Houston system while Elias was there. Certainly not the kind of guy I want to go after, but Elias might look at him for depth on a minor league deal. 35 HR in 139 IP, and a drop in velocity in 2021. What's not to like!

He's actually kept his WHIP reasonably good after his fall from grace with Atl, but the homeruns have been a killer - he's not exactly made for Camden Yards.

Have to love getting something for Galvis beyond a PTBNL or cash. Not sure what the Phillies are doing over there. The farm needs some relief prospects and hopefully they move this guy aggressively. AA seems like the move to me.

So is Burch considered a prospect?  He made it to Bowie and had very good SO and W rates at each level - though didn't accumulate many innings.

  17. AJ Cole's on the list.  He's never pitched a whole lot in the majors, but he hasn't been bad - gets 9.1 SO's per 9, a mid 90's fastball, 4.51 career ERA, nothing special but might be a useful arm.
