Just turned on SportsCenter and ESPN was talking about deadline deal winners and losers. ESPN thinks the Orioles are the biggest trade deadline losers because they didn't add the arms they needed. Said Jack Flaherty has command problems and has lost games all by himself the past couple of seasons.

Like Cardinals fans said, Orioles got fleeced.

While Elias is an excellent evaluator of talent, what I'm thinking is that behind the scenes, either Elias is handcuffed by Angelos (who vetoes deals based on player salaries) or Elias has a long way to go before he becomes a highly skilled negotiator.  Probably the prior, if we can say that last year's 2022 deadline trades were good.

I'm sure they said it, but I find it funny, since Baseball Tonight was praising the trade yesterday on the deadline show.

The sample sizes are so small one could argue we don't know what the likely outcome is.  Maybe his clutch stats are his actual level of talent, though admittedly doubtful.  In any event, let's hope that the psychic benefits for him and the fear that pitchers have given his reputation this year in these situations allow the wave to continue!

Or it could be that he's hitting better in clutch situations this year but that being clutch isn't actually a real thing.

    Fine.

Swap out Cease and E-Rod with other pitchers that were rumored to have been on the market.

I've said it before, I'll say it once more for everyone in the cheap seats:  I don't think Flaherty moves the needle for us all that much.

Perhaps not but I don't think any of the players traded really did that. Maybe Giolito or Sewald but we don't know that Elias wasn't in on those pieces. Maybe they were and he felt they were asking for too much.

Even if you're that high on your own prospects you can't play 4 shortstops.  There is almost no situation where the Os can extract better value out of Ortiz or Norby than they could if they used them to acquire Montgomery.

I don't get this argument. Just because they have a surplus of prospects doesn't mean you trade them for anything, just to trade them.

Do you mind giving a little clarity on the first part? Like where did you see the Astros #1 prospect being rated within 40-50 players of Jackson Holliday?

I didn't say he was. I was admittedly being simplistic but obviously they were looking for value for an elderly, not nearly as good Verlander. I personally wouldn't have given up anything of major value for him. I don't really think anyone on here would have. My main point in responding was that the poster seemed to be taking Elias to task for not getting Verlander.

  6. I don't think they should but at the same time I really don't care. It wouldn't upset me, yet I wouldn't really celebrate it either.  I think the Orioles are right in the sweet spot of retiring numbers. It should be exclusive and not done for every Tom, Dick and Harry that played for you, like the Yankees or Celtics.

Angels just got Giolito and Lopez from Chicago.

Sorry I just don't get this. They're 3 games over 500 and like 4 games out of the last wild card spot. They trade away good prospects for rentals, when they know they aren't going to resign Ohtani.

He has gallowed a bunch of inherited runners to score and his OPS for July is pretty bad. Overall I agree he has been more average than crushed.

Pretty much this. The real issue is that we’re always seemingly in close games.

Bautista was due for a bad one and he had the foresight to get it out of the way in a game that didn't count for the Orioles except for costing us home field advantage when we get to the WS 😉

    I don’t think that’s a thing anymore.

I just can't wrap my head around how people try to come up with reasons and scenarios to keep Mateo. I have nothing against him, and he really seems like a decent guy, but he has no value as an Oriole.

I wouldn't be terribly upset if they DFAd him or traded him but I think he definitely has value as a bench guy/pinch runner/defensive replacement.

I think if Seattle had a new player coming up that somehow acquired the nickname "The Ironman" people here would be pretty miffed/offended.  And rightfully so.

Let our Felix have his own nickname.  Just my .02.

Perhaps if it was a legit nickname that was actually being bestowed upon said player. This is just the Orioles Twitter account (and I guess Kevin Brown at one point) trolling. No one actually refers to him as King Felix and no one is actually trying to make that nickname happen. Talk about making a mountain (no pun intended) out of a molehill.

Part of the reason for that is because fans are disillusioned by their favorite players always moving on too quickly.

They have no one they can identify with their favorite team and cheer for.

Could be. Or it could be that no one attends the games and the team doesn’t make any money to be used to pay their favorite players. Since 2000 they’ve averaged 11th in the AL in attendance.

Well, if you look beyond the last year and a half, they've placed 2nd, 2nd, 1st, and 3rd in their division between between 2018 and 2021, 3 times going to the playoffs. They are historically bad this year, but they have overcome their budget odds and crappy stadium to still be more successful than the Orioles have, so I think this is a bit of a simplistic shortsided take.

And yet they still can't get anyone to come to the games. Since 2013, the highest they ranked in attendance was 9th in the AL. The vast majority of the time, they're dead last.
