This isn't the first time he's shown no command of his splitter. That one just happened to be the absolute worst miss at the worst time to the most dangerous hitter. I've said this before, if Bautista can't fix his splitter, Cano just might end up the closer come July

Mountcastle stung the ball twice last night. The first was a long fly out to the LF chasm. The other was a shot off the RF wall that was hit so hard it ended up as a single. Mateo I agree with. He has reverted back to a player with plus defense and plus-plus speed but offers no value with his bat. I think if there is any place on the diamond that gets a makeover, he may be the one who gets swapped out of a starter role.

What approach do you want him to change there? He was getting quick pitched by a nasty reliever.

Sometimes I think you have a jar with possible thread titles on strips of paper, and you pick one a day to fill a thread starting quota This is not 1970 all over again. This year's team is trying to make the playoffs after a stretch of sucky years. In 1970 the O's were arguably the best franchise in baseball. The team was a freaking juggernaut that was pissed off about losing the WS to the miracle Mets the prior year. The 1970 O's had 4 HOFers (Palmer, Brooks, Frank and Weaver), an MVP in Boog Powell, 7 All Stars (Frank, Boog, Davey, Brooks, Palmer, Cuellar, McNally... and Weaver) Gold Gloves all over the diamond (Davey, Belanger, Blair, Brooks), three 20-game winners (Palmer, McNally, Cuellar) who finished top 5 in the Cy Young voting (losing to Gaylord Perry). And... Grich (.563 OPS in 104 plate appearances) and Baylor (.535 OPS in 20) did get called up but didn't show anything special that made the O's think they were better options than the 1970 roster.

Just wondering... is there really a glaring need for either Westburg or Cowser with the current construction of the roster? McKenna is playing much better than I ever thought he would (especially after that dropped fly ball at Fenway). Maybe Vavra, O'hearn and Ortiz can be swapped out. But this team is 31-16 and rolling. I want to see what Westburg and Cowser can do, but I don't see Elias pulling the trigger unless we see injuries to 1 or 2 players on the current roster.

I can see that. But that team was just super crazy talented. I don't remember anyone on that team that I really despised.

That was more of an individual transgression. Those John Gibbons teams were annoying as hell.

In the 70s my mom taught me that the Yankees were the Evil Empire. In 2004 The Red Sox became the Evil Empire's crazy little brother. That being said, this sweep of the Blue Jays in Toronto is extremely satisfying, mostly because Jose Bautista and John Gibbons earned the status of third most disliked team.

Can Cowser spell all 3 outfield spots? Have him rotate with Hays, Mullins and Santander, have him DH other days. Put Santander at 1B once a week, have Mountcastle DH or have a day off against tough righties. It's not rocket surgery
