I get that he's a beloved guy, a veteran presence, and has worked with our staff for a year and a half roughly, but at some point the juice isn't worth the squeeze.  If a 57 OPS+ bat and worsening defense is not poor enough to move on from, what is? Regardless, I feel most are right... Elias will hold onto him.

I quoted myself, because I wanted to share something with you all.  I have memory issues.  Nothing full blown or anything, but I don't recall things nearly as well as I once did.  I mention this because it occurred to me that I posted a very similar thing about McCann last year, and he performed notably better in the 2nd half.  At least I believe so.   It's not that I feel I'm exactly wrong about McCann, but rather that he showed himself to be better just last season and could do so again.  I hope so.

Memory issues are nothing to be ashamed of, though I'd be pretending if it didn't bother me.  I've been dealing with this for maybe five years or so, though it gets worse every year.  At 59, that's younger than most that have such issues.   I'm sure in a forum as populated as this one, there could be others going through what I am.  It is what it is... it's life, and I hope you're all doing your best with it. :)

He makes Hays seems like the model of health.  I can't see the White Sox parting with him except for a huge price.  For Beavers, McDermott and Willems that seems like a more than fair trade but they would laugh at it.

I had posted Kjerstad straight up for Roberts, but felt spreading out an offer over multiple prospects may serve us better.  You may well be right about laughing at Beavers, McDermott and Willems.

  4. Do you feel Urias and/or McCann have run their course here?  Would you be pleased to see either released/traded and potential upgrades brought up/in?

Urias is a quality defender, especially at 3B, and despite his awful start to this season, had a 112 OPS+ in 2021, 105 OPS+ in 2022, and 99 OPS+ in 2023.  He'll turn 30 in two weeks, and has shown to be a better hitter in the past.  Not a good hitter, but certainly better.  I'd personally be pleased to see an upgrade.

McCann's defense seems to be regressing, and he's awful at the plate.  The soon to be 34-year old had a 76 OPS+ in 2021, 55 OPS+ in 2022, and 80 OPS+ in 2023.  Thus far this year it's a 57 OPS+.  A couple of big hits here and there are nice, but he is upgradable.  Would Maverick Handley, a rookie, be an upgrade?  Maybe, but I'd suspect Elias would look for a more seasoned backup catcher .  This all assumes Elias would even entertain moving on from McCann.

    Your thoughts?

I'm sure they are, he's their best player. The issue is and remains that in 5 years, he's only played in 100+ games one time.

He is a scary injury risk, no doubt.  He seems similar to Austin Hays... always hurt.

Here's the full list of injuries Robert Jr. has suffered throughout his first five major league seasons:

    Hand — Aug. 18, 2020
    Illness — April 27, 2021
    Hip — May 2, 2021
    Groin — April 21, 2022
    COVID-19 — May 24, 2022
    Illness — July 15, 2022
    Wrist — Aug. 12, 2022
    Hand/Wrist — Sept. 15, 2022
    Wrist — Sept. 24, 2022
    Hamstring — April 29, 2023
    Hip — May 23, 2023
    Calf — July 10, 2023
    Finger — Aug. 9 2023
    Quad — Sept. 2, 2023
    Knee — Sept. 24, 2023
    Hip — April 5, 2024

The upside is immense, but parting with Holliday is highly unlikely, as it should be.  The White Sox may not get the return they want.  What I'd give up is a tough consideration.  Was thinking Kjerstad, but perhaps a more reasonable offer would be something akin to Beavers, McDermott, and Willems.

Are there comparable players with a little less upside and control and a better health who are reasonable OF targets for the O's?

Not really.  The only other guy of interest to me is Angels RF/CF Jo Adell, and the 25-year old may finally be putting it all together this year after being considered by many a failed former #4 overall (2020) prospect.  His defense, though, is questionable.  His speed, arm, power, and athleticism are not questionable.

Robert doesn't strike me as a player Elias would seek out. A guy who's basically never been healthy who we'd have to pay 20 million a year?

He's making $12.5 this year and $15 million next season. He'll make $20 million in 2026 & 2027, as a team option.  That's not chump change.  Again, a risky option to acquire him, though if he doesn't perform, we can let him walk after next season.

  8. Luis Robert, when healthy, is a likely impact player and former GG in CF.  The 26-year old however, has had injuries throughout his career, and is starting rehab just now to begin his return to action for the White Sox.  Even so, he'd be the best and most realistically available trade target the O's could hope for, IMHO.

The right-handed hitting Robert is under contract through '25, holding $20 million team options with $2 million buyouts for '26 and '27.  So, if you take the risk on greatness, you could have the 2023 All Star for three more seasons beyond this one.  Acquiring players in their prime is rare, but under these circumstances, it is doable.

What to give up is the highly debatable question.  If Elias were to entertain the possibility, it would likely be after Robert returns and shows he's healthy and performing well.  So, I'm guessing the trade deadline.

  9. These Orioles are good.  Very good.  The results are ongoing.  IMHO we're strong in all sectors of an organization: Players, Scouting, Coaching, Front Office, and Ownership.

    1. We have a multitude of star-level and potential star-level players along with a solid veteran cast. As well, we have some excellent prospects on the verge of helping us.
    2. We have scouts with a good eye for talent
    3. We have quality coaching throughout the system
    4. We have a top-tier front office (which includes our international efforts)
    5. We now have ownership that should be able to re-sign our own guys and even add (gulp) quality free agents, and let the front office do their job. While it's fair to say that Rubenstein has proved little thus far, I expect him to be a good owner.

Most of the puzzle pieces are in place, but many would agree there is more to do to win a World Series.  What gives me hope is that the resources are in place to make these improvements (bullpen, etc) and a smart GM that can fill our needs.

Anyway, I'm feeling good and hope you all are, too.

  10. I'm not sure if it's just a short-term slump, related to the injury, or just a natural age-related regression.  But I've not been comfortable with this pen since Bautista went down, during the entire off-season, nor thus far this season.  If we get Prime Kimbrel, then yes, it makes a big difference.  Yet, even with that (not likely) the other bullpen options, outside of Cano, Coulombe, and maybe Perez, are not good enough to make for a quality pen.  Reinforcements could arrive soon from the starter pool, but regardless, that's for another discussion.

  11. One interesting career stat is Mounty's notable difference when batting clean-up.

    Batting 2nd   (303 PA's) .271/.340/.487/.827
    Batting 3rd    (448 PA's) .273/.315/.488/.803
    Batting 4th   (670 PA's) .230/.297/.383/.680
    Batting 5th    (306 PA's) .312/.356/.520/.876
    Batting 6th    (145 PA's) .289/.317/.504/.821

Norby OR Stowers might not be enough.  Both together would be affordable and a legit package for a really good reliever.  I would want someone better than Kopech if it's both together.

Right, that's what I meant by the slash.  It's a lazy way or just using an already short word (or) LOL!

Going back to Oakland, I also like Lucas Erceg. His page is all red, so everything is good, except his age and SSS.
I really think both teams would prefer prospects who aren’t MLB ready now, but a year or so away. Why waste pre arb years on a terrible team? Especially because of this stupid new draft lottery system. The only way to improve is to have a good farm, and we have the distant prospects to satisfy that. The only team that wants our ready-now guys is someone like KC or Cincinnati, maybe Az.

    Or NY, laff laff.

I like him a lot too.

  14. I imagine Kopech would cost more than Norby/Stowers. Perhaps notably more.  There are many teams that would be in on acquiring him, so IMHO they are not taking back an older (26) AAA guy like Stowers, though he still has decent value.  What it would take is hard to figure, but I'd think Beavers would be someone they'd be interested in.

  15. Assuming health for this staff is a big ask, however, if healthy, what would you expect the staff to look like moving forward?

    My best guess would be:
SP's:  Burnes, Bradish, Rodriguez, *Irvin, Kremer

RP's:  Kimbrel, Cano, *Coulombe, Wells, *Perez, Tate, Suarez, *Means

EDIT: As good as Means looked in his debut, it will be interesting to see how Hyde works these six starters into the rotation.  A good problem to have.
