  1. I had his baseball card a lot.   I didn't start watching baseball until '75, so I missed Hood as an Oriole.   I didn't realize he played as long as he did.  Good for him.   I see he was part of the trade sending Boog to Cleveland for Dave Duncan.  I do remember Duncan.   In '76 there was an exhibition game held mid-season between the O's and their AAA team from Rochester.   Such a crazy thing would never be held now.   Duncan got hit on the hand by a pitch and he let everyone in the ballpark know he didn't like it.   He used language my parents did not approve.

  2. I'm in the opposite boat.  As a true cord cutter, I don"t have masn, don"t have any live channels, so no FOX or TBS.  I do pay for MLB TV where I watch O's highlights, live games of other teams, and MLB content.  I'd gladly pay more for live Orioles games.  I hope this changes in my lifetime.

  3. I'm not freaking out over McKenna's play.  The dude made a spectacular play earlier in the game.  If the Orioles want to win games, how about not giving up 7 runs in the first 8 innings?   The starting pitching is mediocre.  The bullpen is missing a couple of arms and maybe due for some regression.  Unless they turn this around there will be many 10-9, 9-8 games this year.

According to ESPN, Team don’t want to do an offer sheet. They want to make a trade so that the Ravens can’t match.

That's fine if the Ravens want to trade him.  I doubt that they do unless the return is super  high.  They will just sit back and let some other team make an offer which will be matched.  Unless Jackson threatens to sit out or asks for a trade, there will be no trade.

Am enjoying the information/discussion on here and compliment those of you who are much closer to this than I am. Much earlier I voted tag and trade but not this particular route. I think the Ravens are playing "Chicken" with Lamar and themselves as well. I can see the Lamar play but hope they have some sort of fall-back point if it backfires on them. We better have an elite defense if Lamar drags this out and goes elsewhere and we are left with .......... Is Dilfer still around? 😃 Seriously, given the givens, I'd love to read some of your thoughts as to just what the Raven's plan may be if worse case occurs, and Lamar drags this out and then leaves. Maybe that's another thread? It's hard for me to think any professional organization wouldn't have all possiblities mapped out. But then ......?

I too would be interested in such a discussion.  Available guys aren't going to wait on Lamar.  The Ravens I'm sure have mapped it all out, but i have no clue what the plan is.  Looks like all the top college QBs will be out of reach.  They don't have room to sign anyone with Lamar in limbo.  They have to decide when to cut bait and move on.   But then, with two firsts on the table what does that look like?  A trade?  I think, unless a suitor comes forth, he might wind up playing under the tag like Cousins. Then we get to do this again next year.

  6. What's more important to these old-fogey owners who won't be alive in another ten years:  go all-in on a championship run or leave a legacy to the other billionaire owners of keeping salaries down?   I am betting it is the latter.   Plus, with many of these teams they are in position to roll the dice on the next Lamar on a rookie deal.  If they hit on that they get the best of both worlds.

I also think teams are going to be wary of negotiating on the Ravens' behalf.   It's going to be tricky for a team to submit an offer Lamar will take that the Ravens won't match.

  7. FYI ,  T-Mobile usually gives out a free year of MLB- TV as part of their Tuesday deal promotions.   Of course,  you have to be a customer of either their mobile phone or home internet.  I just signed up for their new home internet service, just so I could get mlb-tv for a year.  If I don"t like it , I will cancel, but that won't affect the MLBTV service until it renews next year.

  8. I love these entire playoff games on YouTube.  Just yesterday I stumbled on the 1986 Red Sox/Angels series.  I started watching and couldn't stop.  Just a great series as was the '86 Astros/Mets.   The funniest thing was the series' announcers were Al Michaels and Jim Palmer.  We all know what those guys sound like today.  Going back in time I hardly recognized them.    I also started the intro to the 1981 division series (yes, division series due to the '81 strike) between the Royals and A's.  Palmer also was the color guy for that one.  You can tell he was rather new to the broadcasting thing.   Today, he is as professional as it gets.

  9. The Ravens will have no problem sending Brown down to the practice squad.  Huntley would get claimed in an instant.  Not that I think Huntley is all that.  I believe he is Tyrod Taylor II,   a serviceable backup but not full-time starter.

Fwiw, I liked Howell last night.  He seemed like he was playing covered in grease.

  10. What is the protocol for these things?  Do guys still get to wear the chain, hat, or blazer if they hit a Homer while their team is losing 10-2?

I like it as far as props go.

We can agree to disagree but your wrong. Lamar’s sacks that are beyond 3 seconds include missed wide open receivers and instances where he could have easily thrown the ball away to avoid the sacks. In advance, I’m not talking about all of his sacks. Just the ones where he had reasonable time to get the ball out. If you don’t think Lamar wants to run the football this is probably a wasted conversation. There is no doubt that he prefers calling his own number.

I agree.  Having any conversation with you about Lamar is a wasted conversation.

  12. Interesting points.  I wonder how Rays' players did post-Tampa compared to how they fared with the Rays organization.  Seems like most of the guys they developed did pretty well elsewhere when employed by non-Rays teams.   If this is true, it would suggest your described usage is more beneficial to the development years of the player.  That kind of reminds me of how the old O's used to use pitchers in Weaver's day.   Pitchers were eased into the rotation by building up their experience in the pen.  Guys like Flanagan, McGregor, Ed Farmer (I don't know why I thought of him).  Seems like a better approach than throwing Dean Kremer out there for maximum innings at an ERA of 7.55.

His biggest problem is that he doesn’t really want to throw. He wants to run.

Not true in the slightest.  His biggest problem this past year was holding on to the ball too long while looking for an open receiver.  If he took off divisively like he did in 2019 he would have put up huge run numbers again.   And he was in MVP form early in the season.  I think he got hurt earlier than revealed.  Don't know what player he'll be next season but looking forward to finding out.

  14. I remember sitting in jr high school during those winter meetings dreaming of a huge rumored trade between Baltimore and California.  It was supposed to include some big names on both sides.   Ended up just being this trade.   Very interesting article.  I did not know the O's pursued Reggie again.  The Templeton thing is just bizarre, especially since Baseball-Almanac says he was traded for Ozzie Smith on 12/10/81.  I'd say St. Louis did okay on that trade.

Ford helped us win it all in '83, but DeCinces had a longer and better career after the deal.
