  1. Back in short rants for the second time today... I hate sharing a way-too-thin office wall with a co-worker who doesn't know what he's talking about. I hate listening to someone authoritatively give out incorrect information because he's way overconfident in his very limited knowledge of his job. He did just start here recently, but if you don't know something say you don't know and ask someone who does, don't just make it up and seriously if it's your job to be the staff liaison to a committee made up of five people, know their names... do NOT tell someone to go look in the minutes of the last meeting if they want to know who the people on the committee are, look them up your own damn self if you can't keep track of five measly names!

  2. +1

I got stuck behind two separate people going 35 in a 45 on the way to the dentist today. It was misting. Misting! I wanted to kill both of them. They were in the left lane, too! The left lane is where you go 45 in a 35, not the other way around.

Maybe we should have a separate Driving Rants thread.

Hmm... you rant about Amtrak, you rant about driving... do you like bicycles? Maybe you should start a multi-modal transportation rants thread. Of course that would just give me a chance to rant about how messed up the whole transportation planning system is... :cussing:

  3. Jay Greene and Darryl Proctor. I could rant about their UMBC careers being over, but instead I'll just say how proud I am of all their hard work and the fact that they're going to graduate in a timely manner and thank them for making me a college basketball fan the last two years for the first time in my life.

    Go Morgan tonight!

    • Conference championship games at 11 am

    • Bars that don't open until 11 am

    • Cold rainy days

    • Small town St. Patrick's Day parades that start at 10 and are over by 10:30

    • D.J. Riviera's hardship waiver

    • Condom thieves (I will stop ranting about the last two provided Binghamton loses today)

  4. Retrievers Win! Retrievers Win! The #6 seed in the conference tournament, down 11 points to the #3 seed with 5 minutes to go, forces OT and wins it 79-74! I'm so glad the Retrievers finally got good and made me like college basketball even though I generally don't like indoor sports.

  5. I was more referring to the Super Bowl, but did hear that UMBC was hosed a bit again tonight. Weird, I wonder if Monroe's antics are costing the team a bit.

Maybe. I hope he doesn't have to tone it down. His antics make me . The refs should just get a sense of humor ;). Sadly the conspiracy theorist in me thinks it could have something to do with the fact that he's one of two black head coaches in the conference. We have gotten hosed on an amazing number of calls lately, and something just didn't seem right to me about the way they walked away from Monroe after ejecting Gilliam, then took Jay Greene aside and explained it to him instead of the head coach. Now granted, Monroe was being restrained by his assistants and Greene was perfectly calm, but something was just odd about it. I probably missed some of the context by being in a bar with no soundtrack for the game, but the whole scene was just bizarre. I wish I had been able to hear the post game presser after that one!

  6. People that whine and blame refs/umpires whenever things don't go their way.

    :cussing: refs/umpires :angryfire:

Seriously, I have had quite enough of America East Conference refs lately!

    :o

  7. Coming back to work after being away at a conference. It's ten times worse than coming back from vacation. There's more work because most of my department was out of the office instead of just me, and I didn't have fun last week to make up for this morning's misery.

  8. Glad i'm not the only one who's going through a bit of Phelps overload. I wanted to post that for weeks, but thought I'd get destroyed a la my "like" for Derek Jeter. Thanks for the support.

Trust me, there are plenty of kids who grew up with him in Towson who feel as you and I do and then some. There are some pretty entertaining Facebook groups on the subject. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be gratuitously rude to people.

  9. Awww

    Do you like kids?

I'll like them just fine once this particular group goes back to school on Monday. :new_wave::mwahaha:

Michael Phelps: Less talking, more swimming. I never thought it'd be possible to have swimmer overkill, but it's happening.

He can't swim right now, he's too busy playing poker with strippers and "building the Phelps brand". :rolleyestf:

  10. My office's IT manager, who is a huge Miami Dolphins fan, just walked into my office to talk trash about the Ravens and caught me red-handed reading the OH. He didn't seem to care at all. They said they assume "we're all adults" when it comes to internet policy, but I've always been a little nervous about the computer guy or any of the bosses seeing me wasting time on the interwebs. I guess it's ok now. :thumbsup1:

  11. Multiple co-workers bringing their school age children to work for the entire Christmas break and allowing them to run around the office like a pack of wild dogs

  12. This is not an anti-rant, but forget what I said above about Jake Wasco playing more... and all the Retrievers. :angryfire:

They are relegated to the short rants thread until further notice. Or at least Jay Greene is. The rest of them aren't exactly short, but they all need to be ranted about somewhere! :cussing::cussing::cussing: (Maybe not Darryl Proctor.)

update: OK, Matt Spadafora is also off my rant list. To the rest of them... :cussing:

update #2: Nevermind about Spadafora, I'll keep my mouth shut from now on, at least if I have something positive to say. :(

  13. Watching Greene, at first I couldn't understand what was so great about him. Slow, decent but not great shooter, short, unathletic. Over time I noticed something: he never makes mistakes. Proctor is similar. Not going to be a human highlight reel, but he'll do the little things that add up to big things.

I liked what little I saw of Wasco in the American game. I would be intrigued to see more of him. He seemed like he was more willing to go inside and battle for rebounds than the other big men (except Proctor), Fry in particular.

I think UMBC could be a team I can follow and enjoy watching. Their steadiness would be a relaxing change from MD's ridiculous hot and cold streaks.

Greene is David Eckstein (but maybe with more of Dustin Pedroia's attitude... the scrappy little punk you love if he's on your side and HATE if he's not). Proctor has many of the same qualities except being little and white, which unfortunately leads to him getting a little less attention. But what's awesome is that they're everyman. "Lunchpail" players. They play all 40 minutes and are still busting their butts at the end and working to make the players around them better. How many great athletes with perfect bodies are there out there that can't do that?

UMBC isn't immune from cold streaks, but they very rarely (I saw a little bit of it at the end of the Towson game but it was very uncharacteristic) look like they don't care, which is what drives me crazy about watching a lot of high level athletes (like the O's).

BTW I couldn't agree more on Wasco, from what little time he's gotten. I'd really like to see him added to the rotation. It's not like Fry's a huge scorer so taking him out would cost a lot on the offensive end. And I really do think he plays better when he's rotated out a little more. Sometimes I think Coach Monroe needs to realize that he's very lucky to have a couple of players with the physical and mental toughness to play hard for 40 minutes, but most players can't come close to that even if they're naturally superior athletes.

Haha I said I wouldn't start a thread about last night's game because nobody would care, but now I've hijacked the anti-rants thread. Sorry everybody... but the Retrievers really are worth anti-ranting about! :D

  14. I went to the UMBC-American game expecting to see the kind of team that made the NCAA tournament last season. I was disappointed for the first 30 minutes, then not disappointed, then disappointed again with three minutes left. Does Justin Fry think he's a guard or something?

Also, I watched part of the Nebraska game as well. When they're good... they're good.

Ouch. That one belonged in the regular rants thread. I was at the Toledo game the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It was the first time I've seen them in person since almost 10 years ago when I was a student there and that was one of the great UMBC games (actually the first half was not great but the comeback was awesome). Then a few days later they go and completely lay an egg against Towson (after I make an arse of myself talking trash on the OH). They're not the same team without Brian Hodges, Ray Barbosa and Cavell Johnson, but the young guys have potential and Greene and Proctor are great senior leaders. Hopefully today's 21 point performance will be the start of big things for Gilliam and the win will be momentum for the whole team.

As for Fry... :noidea: I want to like him and I keep seeing flashes that he can be good, but then he keeps looking so overmatched at the most inopportune times. I liked that Wasco was getting in there a little the last couple of games (and even the freshman walk-on Burrier a little bit) and I thought either the extra rest or the competition was making Fry play a little better when he came back in. But today, no Wasco and Fry was only a factor in a bad way. Oh well. They won! :boogie:

  15. UMBC 66 Nebraska 64 :clap3::thumbsup1::beerchug1::2yay-thumb::smile11::boogie::disco::new_beer::notworthy::grouphug:

With apologies to Frobby, the Retrievers are beautiful to watch when they're hot. They were kind of painful to watch in the second half, but in the end a 2 point victory is more fun than a 20 point one anyway.

  16. I'm curious to know why you consider Teixeira a jerk.

As a matter of speaking, that's just a way of expressing my resentment of anyone making that much money in a world where people are starving to death.

Of course we all have personal opinions based on different things we've heard through our social networks over the years... but I wasn't intending to get personal. Although I wasn't really thinking, I was ranting. I'll be more careful not to namecall in the future.

  17. Actually, that doesn't seem like a sexist reference, it seems more like kiddie crushing to me. PEDRO LOVES BB! PEDRO AND BB SITTING IN A TREE! :D

Um, it takes two to sit in a tree and frankly I'd rather sit in a tree with Mark Teixeira.

But yes, I was comparing the way Pedro responds negatively to a lot of my posts that aren't in any way directed at him to a little boy who pulls a girl's hair as a way to get her attention. Not a sexist behavior, just an annoying one.

  18. Please don't bring up the sexism issue b/c that couldn't be further from the truth and it's kind of insulting.

Everyone on this board understands you hate on Teixeira -- you don't want him here.

There's no need to ram it down our collective throats.

I didn't say anything about sexism... I just think you're mighty interested in my posts for someone you don't like. :laughlol:

I'm not interested in people on this board knowing what _I_ think. I just want there to be something resembling balance between vapid "OMG we must sign Tex at any cost!" posts and posts advocating SOME other opinion. When you're not on the popular side of an issue but you believe you're right, sometimes you have to get a little louder.

  19. Thanks for posting that, nobody knew you felt that way.

    Seriously, enough.

Why is it that when I post on the OH lately I feel like a little girl in kindergarten with some really obnoxious boy constantly teasing me and pulling my pigtails?

  20. This whole Tex thing is sure bringing out the trolls on the board. I haven't even read the whole thread since about 4 PM and there were quite a few. Who are all these random people who seem to have just registered to ramble and rant about Tex?!

Last year they were talking about trading Brian Roberts to the Cubs. During the season OH doesn't provide much information you can't get through the mainstream media or by talking to your friends at the water cooler so most of the people here are here because they enjoy both the Orioles and the board format and are pretty serious about discussing the O's. Hot stove season is when all the fairweather posters check in, but it's also when a lot of good new posters who will stick around discover us for the first time. Most of the bad ones will have gotten banned, exhausted their 500 free posts, or otherwise checked out by the time spring training starts at the latest. In a way, the new posters are kind of like minor league free agents... most we'll never hear from again, but some will end up being virtual Jeremy Guthries.

  21. Hernendez (or the variation that I've seen before but not today, Herendez)? Quirez? It's almost like people are intentionally disrespecting the Spanish language by spelling easy names wrong!

By the way I'm not feeling so good. I hope I'm not getting the dreaded Texeria (or Texiara)!
