  1. I agree with what a lot of @forphase1 wrote.

I said it in the other thread, but I am disappointed with the overall approach at the plate with this offense and saying they've got the highest runs per game in the AL is like saying Colton Cowser is at an .831 OPS.  It doesn't tell the entire story.

If we're at the halfway mark and we're still at the highest runs per game in the AL, well then I think that's a little different.

But I also think we've been conditioned over the years to complain.  And let's face it, it's been a long time since any of us have seen continued winning baseball.  It's hard to look at hindsight and be able to accurately remember what you were thinking in 2012 when the Orioles started winning without those memories being colored by good feelings.  It's hard to remember exactly what you were thinking in, like, July of 2012.  I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of us were waiting for the other shoe to drop.

But getting back to the whole "highest runs per game in the AL" bit, if you hear that you'd expect that team to be bludgeoning other teams to death and that's just not what's happened lately.  Lately, it feels like they've pulled wins out of their asses and just gotten lucky.  Adley walkoffs are exciting, but that's not a recipe for success and if you watched that game in its entirety, it didn't feel like a 107 win team and it hasn't felt that way during this drought of runs.

Like I said, Colton Cowser has an .831 OPS but it sure doesn't feel like it.  It's nice that the Orioles have the highest runs per game in the AL but it sure doesn't feel like it lately.

Agreed. His K rate in the first half of last season was 8.6 and the second half was 10.2. This season he's at 8.2 so far.

It's not awful, but it's also not stellar.  That said, he's been the best starter we have for sure.

They need to score some runs for him.

If the Ks and missed bats are going to trend down, those numbers won’t continue.

I don’t expect this to happen but still, have to look deeper into things imo.

That's entirely fair.  I do believe in K Rate.

Of course, but you don't think we had some prior conversations with him and some ideas about load management for this season were discussed?  Load management will be good for Burnes and us.  We need him available for the playoffs.

I don't know if it works that way or not.  He wasn't a 10 and 5 guy, it's not like he could have vetoed the trade.

    After he got here?  Probably.

Yes it should.  Also, maybe Burnes agreed to come to us if we played nice with load management in his walk year???

Well he was traded to us, I don't believe he had a say/so in the matter.

We might see this.  However, I think Hyde likes having good hitters at different parts of the lineup so that opponents never have an inning they can coast through.   I’m not too fussed about it either way.  Studies have shown that batting order makes very little difference in run scoring.  I do think there’s logic in getting your best hitters the most at bats, by putting them at the top.

Well someone needs to show Hyde the batting order studies.

I'd prefer to have Westy closer to the top to get him more at bats.

  7. In case anyone wants to see it...1983, Joe Morgan/Ozzie Virgil I'm assuming Phillies fans thought that they were a team of destiny on that day.

Broadcaster takes a swipe at Frank Robinson's managing skills, too.

  8. Wow, thats some wild company to be in.  Pinch hit grand slam from Ozzie Virgil?  Pretty sure that guy wasn't a big time power hitter.  Walkoffs on Sandy Koufax and an inside the parker from Reggie?  Those are games I'd love to have seen.

This might explain the Orioles clear change in approach.  If you see a pitch you like on the first pitch take a big fat rip at it.  League average SLG is .550 and the O's are at .700.  So there's some analytical wisdom behind going up and hacking.

Yeah, that's true.  Pitcher wants to get a first pitch strike, they want to put something over the plate or near the plate.

I think you can do both, though...I think you can take a rip at the first pitch if it's in the zone and if you miss or check your swing...well, you can still have a productive at bat.  You can still work a count.

So basically the Orioles are Babe Ruth on the first pitch.  If that's the case, then why have they been in a 2 week slump?

Haven’t seen anyone give credit to the fans for not reaching over and trying to catch Adley's homer.  Not sure what the ruling would have been, but they clearly pull back.

This ain’t New York and that ain’t Jeffrey Maier.

What do you mean, you think he will be traded? He has two options remaining so Elias/Hyde can keep playing this game for a long time.

He ain’t long for here. Unless he starts mashing right away or something.

Couldn't agree more. Stowers hit lefties well and finally had an opportunity to bat. Instead Hyde brings in one of our worst hitters. I know Hyde loves his vets but that was idiotic and honestly if I'm Stowers, I'm not too happy right now.

If you're Stowers, you're happy to have two or three weeks in Baltimore again cause this is probably your last go-round here.

  13. I was excited last year because it looked like we were building an offense that could work counts, take walks, drive up starters pitch counts and provide consistent runs.  Yeah, there were some dry spells last summer but they seemed few and far between.

Watching this offense right now is borderline insufferable.
