I am aware. It's also immediately after a day off (and with an off-day just a few days prior). My point is I don't like Urias, Mateo or Kemp as starters...obviously you need bench guys and bench guys get ABs, but I don't want more than one of them in the lineup. That becomes difficult when you have Holliday and Mayo in AAA. Hopefully we don't have much more of this and we see Holliday and/or Mayo soon.

Yeah that's fair.  I think we all are sorta impatient with the coming talent, but it will happen.  Unfortunately we are in a watched pot never boils situation and it is just driving folks crazy.

Meh. Of course we all would rather Jackson Holliday was on the team instead of Kemp, but as long as he's on the team, I don't hate the fact he's in the lineup as much as I hate the fact both he and Urias are. I want Westburg in there everyday. I cringe at the lineups with two of Urias/Mateo/Kemp.

Today is literally the first time Westy has sat.

I hear you.  Our cultural priorities are all over the map.  Especially in competitivd environments.  Parents/coaches alike grin and smile talking about coddling, etc. when it comes to pitch counts and throwing programs.

My experience has been parents only responding to arm injuries after the fact and not being preventative.  And coaches aren't much better because many are just parents themselves (like myself).  I have have had a few parents ask for stricter pitch counts than league rules after their son had arm issues pitching elsewhere.  And we've lost to coaches who throw kids to the wolves for one looong inning or blow by game/week limits.  I have even approached coaches after the game and they knew...  There's a growing push for an independent pitch count person as well.

Can pre-puberty little league shift to being more form/mechanics?  How does the local dad/coach know what to teach?

Can puberty-aged leagues shift to focusing on developing arm care habits?  How does that work when that age iswhen clubs start getting noticed?

Can post-puberty/HS be about all of the above and still decrease/limit injuries even with the amount of unknowns and a more competitive environment?  Many of these guys are less qualified than club coaches.

There are guidelines about usage that are easy to follow if leagues choose to do so.  I ran our local rec league for a few years.  We had pitch limits and tried to encourage coaches to pitch everyone,  with the idea that as a league we would develop more pitchers that way.  It worked reasonably well.  By far the biggest difficulty was father's who believed the rules were good, but didn't apply to their own child.  It was a constant battle.  And there were mothers who would text that we were hurting little Johnny by stealing his spotlight...at 10 years old.

Agreed.  Local Dad coaching rec riding a pitcher or two for little league glory is silly.  Especially in playoffs or tournaments.  Travel ball is slightly more educated but have a 'fools rush in where angels fear to tread' to some degree.  Club ball can have quality coaching but still a ton of unknowns.

This happens sure, but parents are not kicking and screaming about don't make my kid a star when this happens.  No they post film and stats on Facebook about their kid and tell em to keep grinding and throwing harder and glory lies ahead.

It's easy to bash coaches...dad's and little league, but it's all of it.  I thought the Verlander interview offered some good insight.  And if MLB wants the games faster and thus the pitch clock, they should look for ways to incentivize pitchers like Jim Palmer.  He threw to contact and it worked out pretty well for him and for the O's.

Yes the game has changed as Verlander mentioned.  The need for swings ands misses now is huge.  MLB could alter the ball, or even the distance of the mound.  Of course, HR's sell and strikes outs by pitchers get paid.

It is an interesting problem and it will require some true give and take by MLB and the MLBPA to make changes.  I am not optimistic as these two often seem driven by now versus the future...but it is what is needed.

  5. I’m in complete disbelief. We are currently 5-4 against teams that are 16-5 in games not against the Orioles.

We have people who want the owner to step in and hold the GM accountable for this start.

We have people claiming that CoC is an Elias apologist.

Next we are going to hear calls for Brady Anderson or “Confederate” Syd Thrift to take the helm and right the ship.

This team will hit. If it gets the pitching it has so far this year things will be just fine.

How come with a new owner,  that there is no change? The owner could push Elias to bring up our prospects and find or trade for bullpen help? I don't know how doing nothing helps up??

If you didn’t learn from the last owner managing the team….i really don’t know how to help you.

I would like the team to celebrate a homer by immediately hitting another homer.  Who’s with me?

I move we close discussion and proceed to a vote.

It would also be nice to let our young players get shots against lefties so they can learn to hit lefties…especially when you say minor leaguers don’t see enough good lefty pitching.

The hypocrisy of how they go about this is maddening.

I am 💯 certain this is done intentionally to mess with your head. I feel like I heard Elias say it once. Something like:

“We want to do all of the smart things to build not just a winner for now but a club that can win in the future as well. If we can do that and also really mess with fans like Sports Guy, well that’s just a bonus.”

Love this tune. I was a fan of the earlier 1980 version on her Happy Woman Blues album on the Smithsonian label. The Car Wheels version took me awhile to get used to, but then it became my go-to as I don't know where there earlier CD is now!

I met her in '91 at a music festival in Asheville and there were only about 10 people there to see her on her stage. Everyone was watching a (then) bigger act at another stage. But I'd loved her self-titled '88 record so much that I had too see her. Was only her and Gurf Morlix. Lucinda and I exchanged addresses and we wrote each other the next year. The letter started as a form letter, but she added a personal bit at the bottom. The next album was "Sweet Old World" and still didn't get her over the hump to what she deserved. It was a long road to get to be a "name", but glad she finally did get the audience she'd sought.

This is awesome. Congrats even if it was almost as long ago as the Orioles in the WS.

I think you have to go back to Thrift, who I think had medical issues, before finding a FO I'd say was idiotic.

For instance Dan and Andy did what they could with the owner they were saddled with.

This is factual but let’s be honest. Whether it was ownership or FO we have sucked for almost 40 years.

When I read many of the posts on here, I again am reminded and realize how many internet posters are actual incels.  Complete and utter losers and rejects in life who have nothing better to do  than troll whatever internet chat board they take a liking to and endlessly MEME GIF and bash any poster that disagrees with their set opinion.    I see this on political sites (I lean way right).  On various sports sites such as this.   And lots of others.

I have read lots of posts on here personally bashing me.  From my looks to the things I do to the the things I say.  I have refrained from doing any of that.

Why?  Because that is something 15 year old kids do.  Not grown adult men with a life.

All you guys do is troll.  Everything you say is 100% correct,  (in your opinion) and nothing that will ever be presented as FACTS can change your mind.  I have witnessed it here in this thread and many others.  I have seen it on LOTS of websites that have to do with politics.  Right or left.  Rep or Dem.  Communist. ANTIFA. Pro Trump.  Anti Trump.  Right wing supremacists.  IMO this is why for the most part I stay off of social media.  As does my wife.

Why?  Because of threads like this.  So many of you guys are so lost in life and so with NOTHING in life, that bashing a poster like me.....who has been a staunch Oriole fan since I was 3 growing up in MI, gives you joy.

Nothing I have said in this thread (or the other one that the trolls took so much offense to) has been wrong.  I was right in all of my predictions in that thread from last year, and if trolls are telling me that you would rather have Urias, Mateo, Kemp, and Hays starting in place of Holliday, Mayo, Heston, and Stowers (which is exactly what you are saying)?

Then I don't know what to say.  Other than again, you are trolls.

I will try.  Hey, thanks for being a fan.

I forgive you for calling us kids, and trolls.  And I apologize for being a complete and utter, checks notes, loser.  Just doing the best I can.

The above post is, however a classic example of the pot calling the kettle black.

But yes you are 100% right, about everything.  And I'm sure your wife is proud that you think enough of her to post her pictures for such a collection of trolls and losers.  And this thread is a gift, so, thanks for being here.

And I predict that this thread may or may not be locked and you can hold me to it.

I don't like to think of it in terms of the price being too high for 1 guy, even if it is by a little bit. We only have 26 roster spots, and we have a lot of good players. I'd prefer to trade 4 guys that might not have a future here for 1 guy that is basically an ace. Every spot on our roster has to count from here on. There's more value in volume for Miami than there is for us at this point.

Im ok if there is a small overpay.  Certainly for an ace.  But just because we don't have room for people is no reason to just send em all at once.  We still might want another pitcher or reliever or bat somewhere down the road.

I'm saying if he couldn't hit it better than that, yeah, he shouldn't have swung.

He should have been looking for a pitch he could 1) Hit hard and 2) Hit to the right side of the field.  In that order.

Instead, he swings at a breaking ball, low and away, that's a borderline strike, and hits a weak ground ball.

    Bad decision.

If he doesn't swing, it's at worst 1-1 and he still has a chance to do 1 and/or 2 above.  Perhaps he gets the call and it's 2-0, and then he's in a better position to do either 1 or 2.

I can't believe the amount of discussion on one swing.  For what it's worth, I think you are all wrong,  It wasn't a poor decision, but it was poor execution.  It happens.

I think Pickles is a little bat sh!t crazy with some of his points here but the one thing I will say is that a good result doesn’t mean you make a good decision.

Correct and a good decision doesn't guarantee a good result.

  14. 46 minutes ago, Bemorewins said:

I get that it’s too early in the season to move off of guys with an established track record like Hays. My original response to the OP was speaking more to the inability of our decision makers to be decisive overall and seemingly suffering from paralysis by analysis.

However, RIGHT NOW Urias is not a starter on a championship level team. He is a decent player/starter on a bad team or a backup on a good team. Giving regular ABs to guys like him and Mateo while carrying a relative useless player in Kemp. And at the same time guys like Mullins and Hays struggle is too much. And not helpful for winning.

I hope/expect Hays and Mullins to pick it up. And understand them being given a longer leash.

But of Urias, Mateo, Kemp only ONE of them should be on the team as the 26th man. Mateo’s speed has some value. The other two don’t bring anything useful IMO.

For now, Holliday could immediately take over as the primary 2B and be fine there defensively. We could find enough playing time for Mayo as a RHH bat (DH and some 3B).

You might want to peruse BBRef and see all of the high quality people who played games for the defending World Champion Texas Rangers in 2023.  There are plenty of guys like Urias, Mateo and Kemp or Hays.  You are tilting at windmills here.  Understand that the players that are now here will have to perform to keep their role.  Like Mountcastle or O'hearn.

If you are implying that Elias' plan includes replacing and replicating star level talent at an unprecedented frequency for the history of the game. Then all I can say is I hope that is not true. And if it is, I hope somebody above him/the new owner will put a stop to that. That would be an egomaniac run amuck. I can't see that turning out well for us in the long run.

I really hope none of this is the case. And I hope that Elias is way to smart and humble to take such an approach.

You seem convinced on one hand that Elias is incompetent for how he runs the team and yet believe on the other that he is too smart to be this stupid.

I most certainly do not think he has created a position that needs an intervention from someone above him.  And no, he isn't and hasn't been perfect.  How the heck did you survive 2016-2018 without going nuts?

Still no WS flags to fly here since 1983, but getting back to getting one looks a lot like what we have and are doing.  Breathe in, breath out, it's gonna be ok.

Yes. If that player is on the talent level of a Jackson Holliday and has shown that they don’t need extra time at that level.

I think you can certainly make a credible argument that Jackson Holliday is ready.  I think most of us agree he is.  But he certainly isn't repeating AAA.  But even if we both agree and say he is an exception....there are not many people who fit this and it would in fact prove to be an exception and certainly not the rule.

  16. 2 minutes ago, Bemorewins said:

Repeating a level does not equate to 162 as it is extremely rare that you would expect top prospects to spend 162 games at each or any level.

Repeating a level means (at least to me) going back to begin the level that you ended last season at.

My point original point was that these guys have showed that they don’t belong at AAA. And more than being impressed by that, I am concerned that we are now in this situation where guy’s who don’t believe on the Orioles get to stay at the MLB level while guys who don’t belong at AAA get to stay at the Minor League. They seems to be a strategy you would deploy during a rebuild, not one that you would use win you are trying to compete for a pennant.

Opportunities must be ceased within the lifetime of the opportunity. The clock is ticking on Adley and Gunnar. How much time/how many seasons are we planning to operate in this half-in and half-out manner?

So if a prospect is called up for the last 15 games of AAA and starts the next season in AAA...you consider that repeating a level?  That's incorrect by any logical definition.
