Saying we got lottery tickets diminish your argument. 18 year old DSL guys are lottery tickets. Players that slot into the top 30 of the number 1 farm system in baseball are not. But, whatever meets your narrative I guess.

Using subjective non-consensus top 30 rankings is fitting your narrative. What are the odds these guys become quality MLB players? It’s not like we got top 100 guys in return with a high likelihood of making it to that level. Maybe they will. The likelihood isn’t real high though.

I hear you but wait and see what Elias does. He’s pretty deliberate and they gave Hall a pep talk a few weeks ago. Since the he hasn’t been producing. I doubt the are going push Gray Rod. The same folks calling for these moves are the ones saying Elias wouldn’t trade Mancini or Lopez.

For what it’s worth, I’d still rather have Mancini and Lopez over the lottery tickets that we got. It basically comes down to 2022 value vs future value. I’m not sure we got any future value out of those trades. Maybe some guys that can flourish in the pen, but none of them have been dominating their way through the minors - the TJS guy is the only one with good numbers and he’s old for his league and on the shelf now. With that in mind, losing Mancini and Lopez is easier to accept if we backfill them with our minor league talent. With Vavra getting consistent at bats and performing well in his SSS so far, we’re not missing Mancini’s production.

No chance I am if we have a legit playoff opportunity and studs to contribute.

This is the only correct answer to this. You play to win the game - if we continue to push for the playoffs and Gunnar, GrayRod, and Hall can all help that pursuit, you call them up. Besides, what team wants to face a couple of top end arms in the playoffs that there is little MLB video on?

  4. As much as some of you would like to just roll over and die on the 2022 Orioles, it doesn’t look like we’re going anywhere. These guys continue to fight night in and night out, even with the FO giving up on this season. We’re going to the post-season, we’ll beat the ALC winner, and we’ll see what happens from there. I was at Camden Yards for every home playoff game in 2014 when we went through Verlander, Scherzer, and Price. This feels similar. Just gotta win one game at a time.

Not really thrilled with the return. We could have done better with another trade partner, in my opinion. Or would have preferred getting only Balazovic or Canterino from the Twins, which wouldn't have been too much to ask. Again, in my opinion.

All of these moves are shrewd and you just don’t see it.

Remind me again how we’re not punting 2022 oh sage one.

    I don't think they're done.

To anyone that doesn’t think we’re punting on the season, here it is from Elias himself. Clearly not all us can be as “shrewd” as Brooks The Great, but I’ve watched the Orioles long enough to know when the team brass has thrown it in for the season. May as well move Santander and Lopez now too since we’re punting this season and looking to next. Let’s evaluate everyone knocking on the door at Norfolk.

I think you are putting too much emphasis on "clubhouse leader" when it comes to how the team does. Do you think there is one single guy in that locker room that is not happy for him to be going to a contender like the Astros? Do you think there is anyone that is caught off guard from this when even Mancini said he thought he was playing his last game as an Orioles in Camden Yards?

Besides, ask around here and there are guys that will tell you that Odor is the heart and soul of this team and it would implode if he doesn't start. :D

If Elias trades Santander and a couple of BP pieces like Lopez and Tate he's "punting" this season, but as long as he's setting up this team to be good next year and beyond, I'm ok with those deals.

This year is a bonus. While I'm enjoying them playing .500 baseball after being terrible for so long, I'm also realistic and looking at a team with Odor in the starting lineup, Nevin and Diaz on the bench, and their top two starters on the IL.

Elias is doing the right thing and keeping his eyes set forward beyond 2022.

You read my mind on my next comment, Tony. If clubhouse chemistry doesn’t matter and isn’t a thing, what the hell is Odor still doing here?? I’d have put Vavra, Westburg, Gunnar, a bag of balls in the lineup for him 2 months ago.

Did we really "punt" the season by trading a DH with a .750 OPS and 10 home runs?

As for Johnson being 25 before he pitches again, see Tyler Wells on how that could turn out?

Solomon comes with enough high side that I like this deal. I'm less enthused about Diaz being recalled, but let's see how the rest of this trading deadline works out.

I still think Santander is going to go.

There’s more to baseball than what shows up in the box score. Taking out your clubhouse leader on a team that is collectively outperforming the sum of its parts feels like we’re punting on the season, yes. Hopefully I’m wrong, but that’s what it looks like.

Sure, Tyler Wells is a nice story, and hopefully he turns out that way. I wouldn’t punt this season on that chance though. Like I said, the return was more than I expected. I don’t think you can fault the return, just the decision to sell to begin with.

  9. 6 minutes ago, Brooks The Great said:

You severely overrate Mancini if you think trading him and replacing him with Diaz (or more at bats for Vavra) equates to punting our season. This was a great trade, and we're starting to deploy and evaluate our minor league depth at the major league level. All these moves are very shrewd, but you can't see how they are.

It’s not a matter of not seeing it. The end goal is to contend at the MLB level, not just absorb prospects. We play in a division with juggernauts that will field competitive teams most every year, so even if we have a good team any given season, it may not be good enough. We’re already contending this year. You’re living in la la land if you think Diaz will outperform Mancini the rest of this year. This is the epitome of trading a bird in the hand for 2 in the bush.

  10. Looks like a better return than I was expecting… I’d still rather have kept Mancini though. Trading Mancini and calling up Diaz is an indication to the team that we’re punting this season. McDermott looks like a guy that might be a future pen piece, but may also never make MLB. Johnson looks like a good prospect, but will be 25 by the time he pitches again, has never pitched above A+, and will be coming back from TJS. We’re only 3 games out in August, just completed a 16-9 month of July, and there’s a substantial chance that we punted our season for a pair of guys that never even make MLB.

McKenna is awful, man. He's a pinch runner.

McKenna is kind of an ideal 4th OFer. Can play CF, great defensive replacement or pinch runner, not too bad with the bat. I don’t think he’ll ever hit enough to be an everyday starter, but I’m not sure what else you’d want from your 4th OFer…

Not if your goal is long term. If you trade Mancini, Santander can move to DH. Or you can deal Santander and make room that way. I think who Elias can get the right deal for.

Only 3 teams left in the Soto mess. Once it’s resolved the losers will be looking for a second option.

Thinking that a .761OPS DH is going to deliver us a useful prospect is absolute fantasy land. We already have a lot of good depth in the minors and don’t need another lottery ticket at this point. We’ll be going into next season with 3/5 of a rotation made up of 2 guys that have never pitched in MLB and a guy coming off Tommy John. We’re currently getting good production out of about a dozen waiver claims and Rule 5 guys. Any chance they could regress next year? Punting this season when we have a decent chance to make the playoffs to return a lottery ticket makes less sense than believing a .761 DH will net us someone to “help us long-term.”

    Isn’t that a month away?

5 is all you need anyway. If they get 5, that leaves 12IP between 7 pen arms every 3 days. I think they’ll survive. Not to mention we’re yo-yoing that 7th spot anyway. Beau Sulser served that role yesterday. It was Vespi before. We can always DFA and recall Baumann if we need to have someone just eat innings in a losing effort.

Seems like they've been quite successful for an extended period, doing exactly what you say they can't do.

Has it occurred to you that it might be intentional?

Some people can only root for the team while maintaining a general lugubrious demeanor and pink bow tied to their tail.

  15. 2 minutes ago, Roll Tide said:

Today is a good example of the problem. Voth can’t throw more than 80 pitches. Exits after 5 ….. happens nearly every night. Hyde need to stretch these guys out. Can’t get 4 out of the bullpen 4 out of 5 days.

Once rosters expand, we’ll get Wells back and call Hall up. It’s not like we have to go much longer without having additional arms.

  16. At some point, it’s fair to re-assess where our SP really is. We’re 100+ games in - you are who you are at this point and the record just keeps getting better month to month. Folks are waiting for the bottom to fall out, but the staff has been made large adjustments to who some of these guys are, like Watkins learning a new plus pitch this past off-season. Bradish is currently sporting a 7+ERA, yet looks like he has the best pure stuff of all of them. There is a chance the SP gets better than it has been.

  17. We’re not going to get a return worth trading Mancini. What are we expecting - a good reliever type? We’ve taken Mateo, Urias, Perez, Baker, Krehbiel, Watkins, and Wells all from waiver and Rule 5. I don’t think Stowers can out-perform Mancini this year. We have no replacement for Lopez - I don’t even know what that idea is floated. Bautista can close, but the strength to our pen is how deep we are in dependable options. We don’t have another Lopez to call up and provide that. We’ve shown that the analytics and coaching can pull guys from obscurity to prominence; so why are folks so keen to give up our small playoff chances this year for a C level prospect? Keep the band together and enjoy the next 2 months.

If Mateo and Urias continue with this offensive improvement, how quick are you looking to replace them as starters with the young guys at AAA?

I don’t think you can. Urias has been worth 2.7WAR in 63 games now. Had he not missed time, he’d be on a 7WAR pace. I don’t know how long he can maintain that, but you can’t just take that out of the lineup.

Mateo has been worth 2.0WAR through 87 games and will be better if the bat maintains the recent uptick in production.
