I think the bigger problem with the critique you were responding to is that they really did need “quantity.”

I’m generally a huge believer in the notion of “quality over quantity.” But with the way this pitching staff has been decimated with injuries — and guys falling off at the most inopportune time — the answer here unfortunately was not just to go get one or two top guys and really raise the ceiling of the team. They needed multiple starters and multiple relievers to patch the holes that have been ripped in this roster by all the injuries.

And we know that because of exactly the point you raised: both Eflin and Dominguez have been 100% pure “quality” since they got here, but it hasn’t been enough. Eflin has gone 4-0 with a 2.13 ERA and Dominguez has a 1.74 ERA through 10 appearances — you could have traded for Skubal and Tanner Scott, and you would not have gotten any markedly better performance than that. In fact, both of our guys have been better than those guys since the deadline.

But we’re still only 12-11 since the Hays trade started our deadline dealing, in large part because our pitching staff boasts a collective 4.90 ERA in that time frame, despite the efforts of those two. The guys not named Eflin and Dominguez have combined for a 5.52 ERA. Shooting for “quality over quantity” was never going to fix that.

It sucks that we’re here. It’s devastating that 7 of the top 13ish pitchers in the organization are currently out with injuries, and it hurts even more that two others are basically unusable at the moment due to ineffectiveness (Kimbrel/Irvin). But this is a problem that couldn’t have been solved by just bringing in a Skubal/Crochet or a high-end closer — they needed to seek “quantity.”

Totally reasonable and fair points. Nice post.

I guess we weren't done when I originally posted this, but I guess we are now.

Since the OP, we added a mediocre #5 starter, but no additional BP help...

Ugh... I was hoping for a lot better...

I think we are "done" in multiple senses now, unfortunately....

I think Rogers is better than a mediocre #5 starter. Not much better, but better than that description.

The Padres gave up the #44 overall prospect.  Neither Povich nor McDermott were close to that high, I'm not even sure they have ever cracked the top 100 (though I think Povich may have briefly.). Kjerstad is the closest to that #44 though a bit higher.  So it likely would have been Kjerstad plus some good but not quite top 100 guys.

That's fair. For some reason I thought Povich and McDermott were ranked in the top 100.

One of the pitchers San Diego gave up (Snelling) is a top-50 in all of baseball prospect. Norby isn't in the top 100. Povich and McDermott aren't either. Kjerstad was.

That's fair. For some reason I thought Povich and McDermott were ranked in the top 100.

I think a comparable package would have been Kjerstad, Norby, McDermott, Povich

How so? I liken the pitchers SD traded to Povich and McDermott, and the hitters (two infielders ranked 5 and 27) to Norby (5) and Wagner (27).  Might actually be a bit heavy on the O's side. Where does Kjerstad come in?

Exactly. I don't know how that would compare for us, but it seems like maybe it would have been McDermott, Povich, Norby, and Wagner or so. People on here would not have been happy with that.

@riprulz8 @PeteCanes thanks for the downvotes, care to share some feedback on why you take such an issue with the post?

I did not downvote you, but I can see why some may have. You are seemingly complaining about trading Joey Ortiz, when the O's brought in arguably the best pitcher in the AL this year in Corbin Burnes.  As for Norby and Ortiz both, they could certainly be starting infielders in the All-Star game.  They could also be below-average starters and not last in the league for another 5 years.  It was a hyperbolic post blowing Ortiz and Norby's value out of the water while way underestimating what the O's got for them (especially Burnes).

    2022-2024: 4.92 ERA, 4.36 FIP, 4.34 xFIP

That’s a pretty substantial sample, in the sense that it comprises about 60% of his career MLB innings. Hard to locate much data in his profile over that period of time that suggests anything other than a fringe rotation guy.

We’re an awfully long way from 2021 at this point. If they can help him rediscover 94-95 on the fastball, maybe there’s something there. But it seems a whole lot like a once-electric arm that no longer has the same juice.

If they’d gotten your guy Nardi in this deal, I’d feel so much better about it. Even if they had to add another middling prospect to do it.

He didn't really pitch in 2023 (4 games). He was rough in 2022 and has been pretty meh this year though.

Kikuchi is a rental, Rogers has two and a half years of control. Not at all similar.

Plus, the return Toronto got for Kikuchi is way stronger than Norby and Stowers. Now, I do not love this trade since I am not enamored with Rodgers and I'd like to think they could hvae done better for Norby and Stowers, but the Astros trade was far worse.

Bad gamble by ME thinking he can get a return to form. High price, and won’t help.

and now we’ve lost two significant pieces…and we need a 2b too

I mean - Norby and Stowers are not significant pieces... and they have Holliday and Mayo waiting in the wings to help in the infield.

In your honest opinion, can the O's get to the WS this year with it's current roster? If not, Elias must sign a number 1 starting pitcher today by 6pm or trade Burnes.

    "sign" Skubal? Huh?

  12. 3 hours ago, Safelykept said:

How would Holliday not be enough? NO.

I've seen posts articles (I think it was Verducci?) that suggest Holliday plus is necessary for Skubal.  As highliy touted as Holliday is, Skubal has proven his worth in the big leagues and sorely fits a need for the Orioles.  I think I would begrudgingly move Holliday for Skubal, and I expect it would take more than just Holliday.

I would go after Montgomery if I were the O's.  He is a lefty, has pitched in the AL East, and also signs with no draft pick compensation.

I think there's a better chance Mike Elias comes down the orange carpet in a tutu on Opening Day than the Orioles signing Montgomery.

I love Tim. I met him at Dempsey's (now called Superbook) after the Orioles lost Game 1 of the 2014 ALCS to the Royals. I mentioned that I was doing some sports writing at the time, and asked him if he would be willing to do an interview with me about the Orioles during the offseason. He graciously agreed and gave me his contact info. The transcribed interview was published by Tony here on Orioles Hangout, although the article may no longer be up. Tim Kirkjian is pure class.

    Agreed.
