Malike ridiculed me when I reacted to the news of the Orioles trading for him by saying "he sucks" but it looks like the majority of Orioles fans agree with me based on how many people are happy to see him leave.

If this is the market on a subpar free agent pitcher, the Orioles will pass and they'd be right right to do so. Just go with Wells, Irvin, Hall,  McDermott, Povich, and/or Johnson to get through the season in the 5th spot and the next man up. (Zimmerman is still an arm they have for emergencies and double headers too.)

Agreed that Flaherty and likely other free agents are getting way too much money.  This, combine with the surplus of position talent the Orioles have, underscores why a trade makes sense.

Means is the veteran in the rotation.   I still think Elias adds a starter.  It just may not be the top half of the rotation guy the he was looking for.

    1)  Trade Norby, and/or Stowers and/or Urias for a 4th or 5th starter.

    2)  Sign Lorenzen

He may be in on Cease but the bidding will probably  be very high.  Higher than I expect the O's to go.  Sounds like last year.

    Ugh lol

We used to have them come to the stadium and have a mock announcement of them batting or pitching for us with a video montage.

Carl Pavano on the jumbotron as the opening day starter several years ago as the Orioles pitch to get him to sign.  The good old days. :)

Exactly haha. That's all I'm saying really. Something has to give. Either you trade vets or you trade prospects. IMO the Orioles can't just sit on all of their assets and do neither, because at the very least they'd just be eating money and wasting value.

Sooner or later Elias will have to just say yes to something. Hopefully he doesn't back himself into a corner where he's getting pennies on the dollar.

I think a guy like Baumann is actually a pretty decent second or third piece to a trade. Young reliever who throws hard with some ML success. Elias likes trading relievers.

Right.  It's poor asset management.  Not saying Elias won't make a trade, and he has no need to tell the media he is looking to make a trade, but he really should before SPT starts.

Is that the only place we could use a difference maker?

Of course not.  I would look to upgrade 1B/DH and even potentially the outfield.  But this front office refuses to be aggressive, and Roch's blog not to expect anything in the rotation likely applies to the rest of the roster as well. Especially since the rotation has been the talk, since day 1, where we could expect upgrades.

He has 54K followers on twitter.

Every one of those followers who isn’t a bot should have to go through a psych evaluation although I do understand that some follow him because of the train wreck theory.

He's really awful, and quite insufferable whenever anyone calls him out for not having actual sources.  Also was caught plagiarizing Roch and a few other Baltimore journalists from time to time.

Looks like the Braves are going to flip Gonzales after they just acquired him. So the Braves are not out of the Cease sweepstakes after all.

Gonzales presents as SUCH an Orioles' type move.  I'd be okay with it as a depth move, but not as our "big" rotation move.  Was decent for a handful of years (albeit pitching in Seattle) before an injury ended his 2023.

IMO, the Rays are looking to get that 25M off the books.  Taking back someone like Santander kind of defeats the whole purpose.  Lots of reasons why the Orioles and Rays aren’t a good match on this.

    Fair point.

I was thinking that even if they take Santander back, they are still saving around $11M, and I can't imagine JA wanting to take on $25M without unloading salary, even if it's just for one year.  End of the day, the teams probably do not match up for a deal.

    Tyler Glasnow.

Rumors are the Rays are also being asked about Arozarena and Paredes as the rest of the league watches the cheap unfold.

I have a bit of a gut feeling between the Glasnow cheap, McClanahan absence and Wander whatever 2024 might be a bit of an off year for the Rays.    Certainly curious to see the MLB/Minors mix of their Glasnow return.

For today at least, Rays $50mm ahead of the Orioles on forecast 2024 payroll, with Tampa's Glasnow -25 on deck.

Glasnow is interesting.  One year left on his deal, $25M.  Dominant went on, but so susceptible to injuries. I'd trade for Glasnow but would not give up a ton for him.

Here is an article I wrote about the prospect of a deal for Glasnow for those interested.

Matz is owed 2yr/$25 million. There’s no way that we’re paying that let alone trading for it. Trading isn’t a bad idea and I think it’s on the table for us if need be.

You might be right, but if that's the case, it shows how pathetic ownership is that they would deem 2 years $25M too expensive for a starting pitcher.  Not saying I want Matz, but the money should not be an issue if we're talking about a competent owner.

I wish every weekday game could be a night game.  So annoying to have these mid-week day games, though I understand it is sometimes necessary for travel, logistics, etc.

It's a lot of money, but that's the going rate for a solid starter of his caliber.  Who knows what the O's would have had to pay to get him, might have been more.  Good for St. Louis for getting him for 3 years and not 4.

Do the Cardinals have a full rotation yet?   Good grief.   Seems like they are signing everyone they see.

I think so.  They are really taking the replacing of Wainwright seriously!

But I do think the rotation is Mikolas, Matz, Gray, Lynn, and Gibson.  Very middling. Would have loved Gray for the O's though.

I’m not mad about it but, in all likelihood, there goes the chance this team had in signing a potential FA difference maker.

So, it’s either more of the same bs that doesn’t move the needle or trades.

Agreed, it's frustrating because Gray was a realistic target who, while not a huge difference maker, was a marked improvement over Gray.  But can't wait to hear how we now have a full year of Means, and that is a free agent signing!

I would agree that a more conservative approach is likely than what I’m saying here but I think that’s a big mistake.

Love your suggestions.  But I agree, John Angelos is goin to soak in every ounce of good will from this season, tell us to "trust him" and continue being cheap.  Expecting Kyle Gibson Part II and a Givens type reliever.

Yep.  I know I should just let it go but I can't help it.  His idiocy is taking some shine off what we're seeing on the field and it sucks.  I'm watching these kids and keep thinking how they'll be gone in 5 years.  It makes it tough to get attached to them.  This is the team of Brooks and Cal and beloved franchise players and we won't see that again until this POS sells the team.

    He's just so incredibly awful.
