MLB scroll says Simeon Woods-Richardson too.    For a 2023 free agent!!

This morning saw Kyle Gibson was Padres backup - Elias might get really John Means tested these three hours if SDP happens to like him.

I would assume that Elias doesn't like Austin Martin and wouldn't have taken Martin, Woods Richardson for Means.  But that is quite the haul.  I'd be much more open to trading Means now...

I agree. I'm getting pretty tired of Valaika, and I'm not sure why they can't work on Jones's defense at the major league level.

Not sure if it applies to Norfolk, but aren't fielding percentages in the minors often hurt by the quality of the field the players play on? If so, Jones's fielding percentage might improve upon promotion just because he's on a better quality field

This is where I'm at. Yes, his defense is bad, but it's not it matters if the Orioles win games or not, so bad defense from him won't be that damaging. May as well get his feet wet, let him face MLB pitching, and let him work with the MLB coaches to improve his defense.

I can't stand it!  Losing with 2 outs in the 9th, and 0-2 count on the hitter.

This season is torture being an O's fan.

Suppuku seems like a good idea now.

Well yea... the team is horrible.

He's been putting on a defensive clinic this evening in Memphis.  A couple of far-ranging stops on sharply hit balls.  (Along with a double & a dinger at the plate!)

But but but... we have sooooo much to gain from keeping Valaika at second instead and letting Jones continue to rake in Norfolk and not get experience up here!

San Diego just went for Gage Jump. I was hoping we'd do something like that.

Is he a 23 year old tall college senior right hander? No?  Then of course they won't take him, even though everyone and their mother had him ranked higher than every single pick the Orioles have made today.

  6. Very impressive.  And as a college bat at 22, he could and should move quickly.  Hopefully will end the season at Bowie and make a contribution to the Orioles sometime next year.

I was very disappointed Lawler wasn't the pick at 5.  I was surprised he got by the Tigers, and when I saw that either he or Mayer would be available at five, I was really hopeful the O's would take one of them.

Alex Wells has had two starts in July at AAA.   Five scoreless innings followed by six scoreless innings.  He has struck out 10 in 11 innings.  With Hyde saying that Matt Harvey will not begin the 2nd half in the rotation A Wells looks like he may get a promotion.

The rotation may look like Lopez, Akin, Watkins, Means, A Wells two beginning the 2nd half in some order.

May as well.  The rotation currently includes Eshelmann and Harvey--two of the worst starting pitching options imaginable (that's not really hyperbole).  And then it has... checks notes... Jorge Lopez, Spenser Watkins, and a random opener?

Yes, anyone who is pitching well in AAA, and who had a pedigree like Wells, should be getting starts with the Orioles

On its face it sounds like silly question.   Hays has been an outfield his whole professional career.   When healthy he can play any of the outfield positions  very well defensively.    Jones has been a 2B/CF in the minors.  Has barely played left field. So why is this even a question?

IMO Hays offense so far in the majors has not been good enough to hold down left field.   If what we have seen is all there is than he likely is a 4th outfielder.

His current numbers is  251/303/431/734 in 211 at bats

His career major league numbers are 262/312/427/ 739 in 461 at bats.

Outside of 68 at bats in 2019 he has not hit enough to hold down the left field position IMO.  This is NOT to say he can't get better.  He just turn 26 so there is still room to grow.  However his Righthanded/Lefthanded splits are not good for a everyday left fielder.

This season  vs righties 187/257/324/580 vs lefties 375/395/639/1034

Career     vs righties   252/309/358/706  vs lefties 288/320/495/816

Kinda screams platoon guy.  But at just 26 its not written in stone that's where he will end up.

So why  is Jahmai Jones even a consideration for left field.  Well, he appears to be a high error 2B who's bat is ready for a try in the majors.   He has played CF but from what I have read does not have the range to start there.  But maybe he has the range for left field.

Is 296/425/500/925 enough  to say that he should be the O's left field?  No,  but it might be enough to take a look at the major league level.

I could see some kind of a rotation working in the 2nd half where Hays plays left/center/right and Jones plays left/DH/2B.   During the dog days of summer it would be good to give Mountcastle/Mancini/Hays/Mullins and Santander days off.  This arrangement would do that.  It would take at bats away from Stewart but I don't see that as a problem at this point.

Why would the O's want to promote Jones instead of having him continue to play 2B at AAA?  The answer to that question depends on what the O's think for Terrin Varra.  If Vavra return from his back injury and continues to put up a 400 OBP and play better 2B than Jones then maybe Vavra needs to prove himself at AAA in the 2nd half.

Just saying'.   Maybe the competition would be good for everyone.  What do you think?

Good post.  It did seem silly at first, but there are some legs to it.  MY hope is that Hays improves with the bat and consistently OPS at or real close to .800, and Jones/Vavra battle it out for second base.
