Arguing about how to compare the effect of two independent variables on a baseball message board seems like a fool's errand. Let's agree to disagree. Sorry to have wasted your time.

Again, that’s not what Drungo was doing. You didn’t waste my time. I think you guys were talking about different things.  The discussion was the statistics of “consistency”, and that is really comparing variances, not trying to determine explanatory variables or relating variables.

That is painting in very broad brush strokes. I'm not certain I would draw the same conclusion as you have. Standard deviation is a measure of how dispersed data is rather than how one variable relates to another. I think in this case a better assessment would be a regression analysis where you are looking at the impact of one independent variable, walks or OBP on a second independent variable, runs or wins. And thats assuming a linear regression, which may not be accurate.

Huh? Drungo nailed it. If you want to compare variation in two samples or populations of data, then comparing coefficients of variation is absolutely the way to go.  Comparing standard deviations is ok, but not as good. Maybe you misread what he was talking about doing? I don’t think he was talking about relating two variables at all.

I’d love to see my yearly post count over the last 15 years.  I don’t think I slowed down much in the dark years.  Of course my retirement in August 2022 was well-timed to coincide with the Orioles’ rise so my count has probably increased since then.

Don’t want to stray too far off topic, but how has retirement been for you? I’m still eight or so years away, but many of my slightly older colleagues are starting to retire and it’s been interesting watching the variation in what they are doing and how they feel about the transition.

The Orioles' opponents to date have an overall win % of .523

The Orioles' opponents in games not against the Orioles have a win % of .547

The Orioles' opponents in games against the Orioles have a win % of .324

The Orioles' success to date is far more about the Orioles than their opponents.

The next 9 opponents have a combined win % of .457 (includes a double count of Toronto, against whom they will play 2 series.

The Orioles have the best record in baseball against teams with > .500 winning percentage. .737 against winning teams. That’s about as good as it gets.

Gehrig also rode on trains during road trips and sports medicine didn't really exist.

There were also 28 scheduled double headers in 1938. Hard to compare because the eras were so different. Both streaks clearly super freakish.

p.s. Apparently there were 41 scheduled double headers in 1941, but Gehrig was done by then.

But what happens down the road when the fanbase doesn't really include people who're not making six figures? Or since nearly all US sports are doing this, that a significant percentage of the population just doesn't regularly go to live sports because it's outrageously expensive? Like I mentioned, me, the wife, and two kids going to DC United on Saturday and the total bill will probably be $350, and that's with discounted tickets and if I can park at Ft. McNair next to the stadium for free.

I totally hear you, not really disagreeing, and it sucks. BUT, I'm not sure that it really matters in terms of fandom. The vast majority of NFL fans won't attend an NFL game in person in their life. Another chunk might attend one or two games in their entire life. I know die hard college football fans who have literally never stepped foot on a college campus. Sports are kind of weird that way IMO. Almost by definition, as the sport gets more and more popular a smaller and smaller percentage of the fan base will see a live event. Taylor Swift can somewhat address that "issue" by going on insanely long tours that sample a crazy broad geographic range, but not so much in sport. Attending a professional baseball game is an almost magical event to me. The nice stadiums really are the cathedrals of our society in a way and it's just a special experience. I wish all fans could experience it. But a lot of them never do and yet maintain extreme fandom.

Sorry for the semi-random post. I'm in pontification mode.

    I guess thanks?

This is like when the Gen Z kids say they think I'm cool and I can't tell if they are joking.

I’m not hitting on you or anything, but you are a big part of the OH community and definitely an interesting poster. Heck, I’ve even streamed music based on your recommendations to the board.  You go nuts every now and then, but that happens to most of us on here from time to time.  😎

Other than the fact that he mocked Him. Roy said Those players for a decent pitcher, who could be Dillon Tate or something of the equal. Are you going to get CB, no but you're  going to get something north of a coffee maker. Of course he was being Fictitious, and I Did qualify my post as not that it means anything. You're right Its just a message Board and part of what this board does is reminisce about Oriole Lore which many times being about players from the 60's, 70's or 80's. Roy is the only poster Ive read that's knows Miami Stadium. The only thing I asked the board and maybe its the the wrong thread, Do you know the significance of that Stadium or the city of Miami for that matter. I'm 62, still work, Kids in there 20's ask me today? Why are you're an Oriole Fan, You must be from Baltimore, what I tell them is, no I'm not from Baltimore, I'm an Oriole fan because I grew in South Florida. Roy knows, Do you

First, Roy gets treated with kid gloves by basically every poster on the board. Roy is a very emotional poster/fan, everyone enjoys that he posts, and of course hopes he continues to be a part of OH. But basically every other poster would have far, far stronger pushback on the ideas that Roy posts. If you read the board, then you know this. Let’s not treat Roy like he needs to live in bubble wrap. I think he can handle somebody challenging his ideas. If not, then don’t post the ideas. Second, Roy’s post didn’t have jack to do with Orioles spring training back in the day.

Irvin has far more ML  innings pitched and therefore far more veteran status than Means

That’s an interesting factoid. Some of us forget that Means has really only thrown two “regular” ML seasons.

The walks will come. We have some very discipline hitters who make consistently good swing decisions.

Yes, the team OBP/walks is a bit of an illusion right now. The top six hitters on the team have OBP between .360-.382. Santander and Mullins have very low OBP right now.
