People seem to think that it’s a given that Irvin is the one to move to the bullpen when Means comes back but I’m not sure why that is. Wells certainly is a contender, he’s been pretty bad.

I think Irvin will eventually be in the Tides rotation so he stays stretched out as a starter. Wells to the pen.

Not sure why you are offended. You don't think this is unneeded extra pressure for the kid?

It’s offensive and stupid. You are playing arm chair psychologist with a sprinkle of a-hole. If you don’t see why your post is crappy then you need to take a long look in the mirror.

If I told your family to piss off while important stuff was happening in your life you would find it offensive. Or at least should. Don’t be a d*ck about someone’s family. And if you make crappy posts about someone’s family you should expect some push back.

It's time for Dad and the family to kindly piss off back home now. Holliday had his all star dad right behind him for three games and HOF Cal in the other front row behind him tonight.

Enough with the pageantry. Just let the kid play now and be with his team. Now he's under pressure to get a hit for his family who hasn't had a reason to cheer for 3 games. The pressure will only build now. Go home Matt.

Crappy post. Your opinion should piss off. What a total a-hole take.

The Natural is a masterpiece.  The Producers got the rights and decided to make their own story.  And they did a wonderful job.  But you are right it is totally different.  The movie is a perfect display of the Heroes journey.   The movie wanted to show the importance of being honest doing the right thing.  The book is a subversive tale.....but well done.

Well dang. I may have to reread the book after all of these posts.

I did watch Ted Lasso, and I enjoyed it a lot, but if there was any reference to The Natural, I have long forgotten it. I've held my opinion of the film ever since I first read the book, which was probably in 2006 or 2007. I loved the film as a child, but once I read the book, I just felt that I'd been lied to.

The "review" language you used in your post reminded me of this scene!  Fun stuff. The book felt like the lie to me! :)

That’s not to say the film isn’t enjoyable! But the book is masterful.

The movie was a childhood favorite for me and I was in funky headspace when I read the book. I may have appreciated it more if I could divorce my feelings for the sappy movie, which I totally admit is sappy, from the experience of the book.

It’s amazing that Westburg was able to have that game after several posters on here last night were acting like he secretly had his leg amputated.

He played great for someone with a severe hamstring injury.

Counterpoint: The book is a complicated, layered, richly allegorical work of literature, whereas the film is a beautifully shot, revisionist, dumbed-down piece of Hollywood schlock. I'll die on this hill.

Ps. Did you watch Ted Lasso? If so, then you heavily borrowed that book review!! 😀

If that’s what you think, then you’re already dead inside.

🤣Just giving you grief. The main characters in the book are all pathetic. The line, “talent is not enough” works exactly opposite in the book. In the end, Roy is a total loser, a total Casey at bat. He literally strikes out!! And the alcoholic stupor where Roy and Kim Bassinger like character hit someone while drunk driving? Yuck yuck yuck. I loved the cheesy heroism, wounded soul redemption story of the movie. Maybe I’m misremembering, I read that book on a flight back from San Jose, Costa Rica, in 1994 after literally spending two months fairly isolated in the rainforest, but I found the book very dark and the characters had basically no redeeming values. I tend to like dark stuff, but sometimes I need a wounded hero type to redeem themselves. I hated, hated the book.

That's a fair point. But when I look at what it usually takes to win this division and be one of the best teams in the sport, I think about sustaining some winning streaks and avoiding longer losing streaks through the course of the season. Like we did last year.

Every time Irvin starts against any team with even a decent offense, I think we are in trouble. I think this will be an uphill battle and the bats better swing it today in order for us to win. I have no confidence in Irvin and just don't believe in his talent.

With Wells his homer issues are very well documented, but at least I feel like we have a good chance of getting a quality start. Kremer (who was originally slatted to be the 5th starter) I know will be up and down, I there is some volatility there in terms of the range of outcomes from excellent to awful in any given start. But Irvin, rarely do you get the good/a quality start. Usually even when he is "effective" in terms of results, it comes with a ton of traffic on the bases. IMO he's just not that good.

Unless there are additional injuries, then Irvin will be starting in Norfolk in about three weeks. He’s insurance that they unfortunately had to use.

The Natural was a very gnostic religious tale.  I love the subtext of it all.  The whole getting poisoned by a Jezebel woman and only properly healed by the feminine power of his childhood sweet heart and being saved in a special "maternity" hospital.  The scene where his girlfriend is in the stands and he is slumping till she holds a round rolled up paper "very phallic" and the sun comes from behind her head like a corona and blast Robert Redford.

It's very religious but it damn well ain't Christian.  By the way the ending of the book and the movie are totally different.

The book is horrible. I literally threw it in an airport garbage can when I finished it. I was warned that if you love the movie, then don’t read the book. That was good advice that I did not follow.

Incorrect. This is all driven by the Holliday family. Elias wanted to promote Holliday to start the season, but Matt Holliday said not until the Ripkens agree to let Jackson wear number 7. The Ripkens finally said yes a week ago, but then the eclipse was coming and Matt Holliday wanted to wait until after the eclipse happened. Man, this is all so obvious.  I can't believe you didn't see it right away.

By the way, Cal being part of the ownership group was a major concession by Rubinstein to get the Ripkens to agree to this. I'm not sure how Matt Holliday manipulated the timing of the eclipse, but it is what it is.

IMO, this is a terrible move. (Worse then Kemp. Worse then sitting Cowser.)

There is ZERO chance I would bring up a Boras client with his potential, ahead of the service time window. ZERO.

Betting on Holliday to win ROY is a nice sentiment, but it is FAR from a sure thing. We will ALL be crying about this in 6 years. 5 if they trade him for his earning power.

Too many what if’s to worry about this IMO. 2024 World Series run >>> than hypothetical five or six years from now. The Orioles may suck in five years and be on the verge of another round of rebuilding. The Orioles may be super glad to trade Holliday at that point. But we know they don’t suck right now and have a lot of young talent to integrate into the team and important roster decisions to make in the next year or so. Heck Boras might drop dead from a heart attack by then or retire. Way too many variables at play that far out. Just my two cents.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. If the Orioles win the World Series in 5 games, some of you would be upset they didn’t win in 4.

    That’s total bs!!

Some posters would gripe about the lineup and bullpen usage even if they win the World Series in four games. 😎
