Just what I think. I liked Ortiz better than Westburg. Perhaps the Brewers did also. I like the trade, but Ortiz could have easily started at second or short for the Orioles in 2024.

I think it's pretty obvious that the Orioles valued Westburg > Ortiz based on how they handled their promotions / playing time.

Nobody is going to listen to part owner Cal Ripken Jr regarding the Orioles shortstop position. Got it.

You honestly think a largely symbolic ownership share is going to give Cal the right to tell Elias and Hyde how to deploy their roster? Insanity.

Gunnar is likely going to be close to full time at SS, but that has absolutely nothing to do with Cal.

Quick Question: Is the $1.7B for 100% of the O's/MASN or is it the 40% that they've been discussing? I have assumed that it was the price the "new" group is paying for 100% of the team/MASN. Also, does it include the portion that the family will keep? I don't really care but it seems like an abvious question.

I'm pretty sure it means that the team is valued at $1.7B in the deal so they are paying 40% of of that right now.

To me, it looks like getting to the post-season was enough for them. Maybe they're happy with that and consider it to be a successful season. I certainly do. But I don't think that Texas is the better team. This series looks like a wasted opportunity, especially when nothing for next year or beyond is guaranteed. They will have to do A LOT to win 101 games next year. I wouldn't count on that happening.

What about how they played makes you think getting to the post-season was enough for them? The team went down 7 runs and battled the entire way.

Sometimes a young starter implodes and sometimes you lose games, but questioning if the team actually cares about winning is absurd.

I'll be pretty shocked if Ortiz is on the roster.

I also think they might not do a super heavy Right vs Left lineup, since Heaney may not be in the game more than a few innings.

    1. SS Henderson
    2. C Rutschman
    3. Rf Santander
    4. 1b Mountcastle
    5. Lf Hays
    6. DH Hicks
    7. Cf Mullins
    8. 2b Westburg
    9. 3b Urias

I like the idea of DHing Hicks and then being able to flip him with O'Hearn or Kjerstad later in the game when we're up against a RHP. I'm honestly expecting to see Mateo start, but probably prefer Westburg + Urias.

Shouldn’t Biscotti step in here and cancel the concert? It’s Wednesday, there is rain in the forecast in the morning. If this was a Ravens playoff game and Angelos was doing this, all hell would break loose. I bought my ticket package end of may for home playoff games.

To all the people with Maryland Stadium authority attacks, I know. As a partner you have say.

What does you buying a ticket package for home playoff tickets have to do with the concert or the time of the game? No one is going to prevent you from using those tickets - it's not like the game is going to get cancelled or played on the road.

I have to say, that would be pretty great.

Not that the stadium won’t be rocking anyway, but that building would absolutely explode if they got a whistle, a light show, and one last heater (and Adley hug) from the Mountain.

And as you said, it would be a great opportunity to properly give him his flowers for an unbelievable season, where he flat-out carried this team on his back at times.

I've been saying this is the move and I 100% agree with you. Felix deserves to have that sell out crowd screaming for him to start off the series.

Jones wasn't inducted into the O's hall of fame yet.  I'm sure he will be someday.  But yea Nick was there to help celebrate Jones for his retirement ceremony/festivities.

Oh you're right. For some reason I thought both of those things happened, but it was just his retirement.

I want to see Nick back at Camden Yards.  Has he officially been back since he retired?  He was a big part of the O's getting back to the playoffs.  Sad to see him go to the Braves, but it was probably the right choice.

He was back recently for Jones retirement as an Oriole.

What was the O's record in City Connect jerseys?  I went to 2 games this year wearing it and they lost both games 8-1, so It likely will live in my closet for the rest of eternity never to be worn again...

I will also not go in person or watch on TV- I think they are winless when I do.  They seem to win whenever I am not looking so I will be content to not look until the games are finished.  I've even "peeked" on my mobile phone and converted games we were winning into defeats...  I literally watched just one inning of this year's All Star game where Felix Bautista blew the save.

Any other silly superstitions people have out there?

They won 101 games this year. You didn't watch any of them?

It just is what popped into my head for why he wouldn't be at the party.  I don't know his status; it was just my speculation, as I recall a similar incident with Josh Hamilton many years ago.

Well, that's obviously not the case because he literally just did this same thing a week ago.

  12. 2 minutes ago, Pickles said:

I think he just wasn't in the celebration party.  I was wondering if it was a sobriety issue.

He was at the celebration a week ago. They interviewed him and he was talking about how much he enjoys the champagne celebrations and watching the young guys experience it for the first time. Where are you getting sobriety issue?

I would take exception to the nobody like John Angelos.  I have have never met the man and my only point of reference for liking or disliking him is how the franchise has been handled during his ownership.

    Under his ownership:

The Orioles have ascended to the best record in the American League

The Orioles have the number 1 farm system in baseball

Estranged Orioles like Adam Jones and Eddie Murray have been embraced

The present looks great, the future looks great and the past is being recognized.

This is all I could want from the owner of my cherished franchise.  He does not have to be my friend I have enough of those.

The future is going to look significantly worse if Angelos doesn't spend to keep some of our homegrown talent. He's made a point of saying it will be really hard for us to do that and that the fans will have to pay for it (despite the fact that the team has been massively profitable while he's spent virtually nothing).

He's also playing games with the city I live in -- while they're offering him a fantastic deal -- because he's obsessed with squeezing every last penny out of every situation. He cares way more about profitability than winning, which isn't a good trait for an owner to have. Maybe he ends up spending to keep the run going, but I'm not holding my breath based on how he's acted so far and the public comments he's made.

Agree completely.  While Sig and Elias aren't perfect, I could not expect any better than what they have done...  Basallo, Bradfield, Mayo, Norby, Ortiz, Holliday.  Just such a good job.  Moving the LF fence back.  Plugging the holes with decent vets.  Really worried that Angelous drives them away.

Elias and Sig's results have been about as close to perfect as you're ever going to get. Every front office makes moves that don't work out, but they're on a massive heater right now when it comes to drafting, development and building a winning baseball team.

He can always go down if he isn't performing, and you can gain your extra year.  They have Gunnar for 5 more years and Adley for 4 more.  I think the calculous starts to change ever so slightly next year.

I'd expect Holliday to perform well enough to stick with the team. I'm not sure if he'll be ready out of camp, but I think a year of control during his prime is way more valuable than 2 weeks of games when he's figuring things out at 20. I know everyone hates service time manipulation, but our owner is way too cheap for us to ignore the benefits.

  16. 12 minutes ago, emmett16 said:

They overpaid for their LHH 2B last year.  They can upgrade over 2B 2023 stats internally and save $$ with Holiday.  Barring injury or a disastrous performance in ST, I don't see how he isn't the starting 2B on opening day effectively replacing Frazier's role on the team.

Unless I've missed something about the current ability to manipulate service time - you don't see how the Os might value an extra season of Holliday at 25-26 over a few weeks 20?

  17. 39 minutes ago, Frobby said:

Talent is not all that matters.  The experience needed to realize that talent also is important.  Nobody doubts that 22-year old Jackson Holliday would better than 26-year old Joey Ortiz.  But will the 20-year old Holliday, who’s played a handful of AAA games, be ready to be better right away?  That is the question.   And he’ll get a chance to answer that question next spring.

Even if he looks ready they could easily send him down to AAA for a few weeks to try and gain an extra year of control. It might not end up working out, but that extra year could be absurdly assuming he lives up to the hype. It's not like we don't have plenty of options to hold down 2B and as you said it's totally possible that Westburg or Ortiz could be better in '24.
