  1. Good for Rom. He's had a good year in AAA. I remember thinking "This guy doesn't have the stuff to be a ML starter" about Zach Davies when we traded him and he ended up having a solid career.

  2. I've started comparing him to Martin Prado in my head. Similar profiles of glove first at 2B/3B/LF but solid hitter and well-known as a great clubhouse guy. Prado had a 27.7 WAR career which would be an awesome outcome for Westburg.

  3. Westburg is getting underrated due to the young talent level on this team. On many teams in baseball, he'd be the most exciting young player they had.

In 32 games, he's been worth 0.9 WAR (and 0.9 fWAR). His peripherals look solid and that's a 4.5 WAR pace over a full year.

I'm not saying he's a 4.5 WAR player long-term, but he's fast, he's a solid 2B/3B defender, and he looks like a league average hitter. That's a very valuable guy to have.

The scorer actually had an emergency in the first few innings and had to leave, no joke, so there was some shuffling around. Also the umpires were not doing their job in regards to player substitutions, so the stat crew was playing from behind a few times.

Thanks for the info. Do you work for the Ironbirds?

He'll get a year of service time no matter where he finishes in the ROY, since he was on the OD roster. It would only make a difference for him if he had been called up a few weeks/months into the season, like with Adley or Michael Harris II last year.

That's interesting, thank you. I misunderstood the rule. I thought a whole year was granted, not just completing the year.

Why? Wouldn’t they just replace the players graduating for free agency and arbitration?

Angelos's Razor says "The cheapest possible future is the most likely one."

So I agree. I think it's more likely Hays and Santander are traded.

Where would we get a Comp pick?

IIRC, we get an A one year (Beavers last year) and a B the next year (Baumeister this year). So next year would be A.

The O's would get a pick if Gunnar finished top 2, right?

He gets a year of service time if he finishes Top 2.

We only get the pick if he wins (and was on the OD roster).

Did you notice that Elio Prado had 3 as well.   I don’t recall seeing one OF with 3, let alone two different outfielders, especially with one team, each have 3.

They just switched the assists to Prado 😄 Who knows what happened? The official game scorer in Aberdeen might have had one too many tonight.

I think that Santander will be traded in the off-season and the RF version of Frazier signed.  Waiting for the outcry from the Hangout.

Hays, Cowser, Kjerstad, Mayo, Mounty, O'Hearn, Westburg, and Stowers can compete for 1B/COF/DH ABs if Santander is traded. No need for a FA.  I'll go on the record as saying I want him back next year for about 10M, but I would not give him a multi-year deal.

  10. Here are some1B/COF/DH FAs from last year and what they got guaranteed.

    Abreu - 58

    Haniger - 43

    Rizzo - 40

    Bell - 33

    Pederson - 20

    Mancini - 14

    JD Martinez - 10

They're not playing well. As a group, they're barely above replacement level this year. I think Tony should end up in the 35-40 range if he keeps this up, and I wish him the best of luck wherever that is because it won't be here.

  11. August Update

    Lock

Kjerstad - Nothing needs to be said here

    On the Bubble

Pinto - 3.81 FIP as a SP in AA at age 22 is strong. Rom made it to AAA at age 22 last year to get protected, is 50 strong innings in AA enough for Pinto? Some say he has a reliever profile anyway, so maybe a team tries to stash him if he's unprotected.

Handley - .250/.412/.425 in July. If he's as a good defender as advertised, he could be protected as a 3rd catcher. On the other hand, most teams only keep 2 catchers on the 40-man and Mike almost never keeps 3.

Haskin - Out for the year with a hip injury. Could a team take him as a backup OF despite < 100 PAs in AAA?

Brnovich and Brandon Young - They're back and have a chance to pitch their way on to the roster if they look good.

    Outside Looking In

Wandisson Charles - He dominated AA and I got hyped, but he's walked 11 guys in 9 IP in Norfolk.

Garrett Stallings - I like Stallings. I think he's a Spenser Watkins style depth starter. 4.59 FIP in AAA as a starter.

    -

Things are getting fun now. I would protect Kjerstad, Pinto, and Handley if the season ended today, but I could see any of the bubble guys getting protected or left off. We'll have to see who makes a push over the next few weeks.

I thought looking at it awhile ago there were a ton of SP’s who would be available. Ton of expiring contracts for SP’s on non contenders.

I see the market right now as roughly:

    1. Montgomery
    2. Stroman
    3. Snell
    4. ERod
    5. Flaherty
    6. Lorenzen
    7. Lugo
    8. Hill
    9. Clevinger

Did I miss anyone? Verlander has a lot of rumors too, but he's on a 2 year deal. Stroman might be off the market with the Cubs hot streak. I think any of 1-8 makes the Orioles better, to varying degrees.

  13. I'm personally proud. Manny is a HOFer and it was absolute pleasure to watch him come up and start contributing to the first playoff team in many years. He's the best Orioles since Moose left.

I'll never forget throwing behind the runner at third, his insane defense early in his career, or the walk-off grand slam.

What a day for Holliday to get pulled from the starting lineup, fire up the speculation. It has since been reported he is sick.  It did make me think though… who would you trade Holliday for?

Off the top of my head: Acuna, Franco, Carroll, Kirby, and Strider. I'd guess there are about 15 guys in baseball I'd trade Holliday for taking into account service time and our cheap ownership. Adley and Gunnar are two of them. It's a good time to be an Orioles fan.

Pitch number 3? That used to be kryptonite for him.

The first week of the season we (myself included) were celebrating Mounty laying off a bunch of sliders in the dirt. Then he lapsed back into hacking at them. I'm not optimistic that this will last.
