Certainly way too early to start saying bust or really being concerned, but his start has not been what was hope. Hopefully next year this time we will have no concerns.

Oh definitely too soon. I'm not worried yet.

None from me. He was drafted to be an impact hitting catcher, if he's not dominating A-ball pitchers at 22-years old I'm going to have concerns that his bat may not play the way the Orioles thought.

That's fair enough. Hopefully he hits. I was torn on who I wanted the Orioles to pick. Rutschman or Vaughn.  A bust #1 overall pick would be devastating to the rebuild.

Vaughn significantly out hit him in his pro debut as well. I'll start to get worried if we're a few months into the season and he's still not hitting like we expected, but the one thing that has been consistent with Rutschman since he's been a pro is a lack of hitting minus a 10-game stretch in Aberdeen.

People can talk about all the great BP and his good looking at bats all they want, at the end of the day, he's a college 1-1 pick and the expectations are for him to produce at an impact level.

Vaughn was considered by many to be the most ready impact bat, but Elias is on record as saying he thought Rutschman had the better bat. Obviously it's very, very early and I'm not saying he won't still turn into that guy, but he's failing his early tests and looks.

I'm honestly a little shocked by his lack of offensive success so far. We kinda looked over it last year because of the mono, but he's been bad this spring against some minor league competition and he was bad when he got to Delmarva after that 10-game hot streak. when it seemed like he was finally recovered from his mono.

It's spring training, and it's doesn't matter overall, but it would be nice to see him get some hits giving us a glimpse of what people should be getting excited about.

Am I worried, nope. Have I been disappointed so far, yeah, because I expected a guy who was going to be close to being ready and we have a guy who hasn't really hit anywhere in the pros outside of that 10-game Aberdeen stretch.

I really hope this is just some kind of rust or something we don't know about it and when he starts the year this year he starts hitting and doesn't look back. But if we're a few months into his season and he hasn't hit yet, I'm going to be officially worried.

I know he didn't catch any, but this year he will be learning new pitchers and getting used to catching in the Pros. How much leniency does he get with the bat in that regard? Should he get any adjustment time for that? Does that really have that huge of an affect on his offense?

You mean four time All-star, 11 year ML player Matt Wieters?

What's your point? It wasnt a knock on Wieters. But he was pegged an All-Time type hitter, and he tore up the minors. What you do good or bad in the minors doesn't automatically make you a HOF or a bust was my point. And I dont consider Wieters a bust.

Not too worried, but I’d be happier if he were hitting like Andrew Vaughn (.364/.553/.727 through yesterday in 16 PA).

In all fairness, Vaughn was considered the best bat in the draft. It's really his only skillset.

I’m a little concerned not just because of this spring but the combination of last year in the minors and this spring. He hasn’t shown anything at the plate. I did see some video of some good looking bp sessions but that’s the only positive I can think of.

You know who tore up the minors? Matt Wieters. It's way too early to be concerned about him.

Fair enough. All I ask is that you give her a fair shake instead of assuming you won't like her announcing because she's a woman.

I listened to some of her clips...she sounds awful...as an announcer...not as a woman.

Hey, Merry Christmas dude. You've made your point a few times. Let's move on.

Is it snowing where you are? Do you hear sleigh bells?

Tis the season of 4 new Rule 5 names. How could anyone not be thrilled with that? @Moose Milligan

This happens all of the time. We usually kiss and make up.

Tis the season to be marry... you know any girls named mary?

I did have information, I knew that the Angels had traded him to the Giants.  That was the totality of my participation in the thread to that point.  You asked about stuff I hadn't been talking about.

And since you had no information...you continued the conversation by being condescending and accusing me of trying to insult you. Which I took issue with. Even after I said I wasn't trying to insult you, you basically called me a liar.

I'm still trying to see where you admitted you were wrong.  You admitted to not being informed and then you, frankly I'm not sure what that second post was about.  Asking me if I "personally" know what Elias thinks.  Just seems like you were lashing out at that point.

I admitted I didn't know about the trade...then I asked if you knew if Elias considered Wilson a worthwhile prospect to take on salary for. Since you're so much more informed than I.

  11. This is pure speculation by Connolly. I seriously doubt the Angel's would have dealt a highly touted prospect just to get rid of Cozart. Then Connolly uses his speculation, to try and make a case for something that isn't there. I see no evidence the Angel's would give up a top draft pick to get rid of Cozart. I also see no evidence the Orioles wouldn't take on money to get a prospect, if that prospect was indeed available.

Seems Connolly has taken a playbook from Ken Rosenthal. If nothing's there...make something up.

The truth is, often the most meaningful work isn’t exciting to watch, and gets very little attention.   Let’s say Matt Blood hires 5-10 minor league coaches who understand the front office’s vision, are on the same page, and know how to implement it effectively.    That could have huge consequences for the long term success of the franchise, but we’re never going to know it.    Let’s say Koby Perez hires 3-4 really plugged in scouts to help him beef up the Dominican operation, or hires a guy who oversees the construction of a first class training facility.    Let’s say Sig Mejdal hires some 23 year old kid who’s a really brilliant analyst who comes up with new information that helps us gain an edge.

Most of those things are more important than who we pick up off waivers to replace the guy who holds the 40th spot on our roster.   But it’s the latter we’ll be discussing because we don’t have much information about the other things.

I agree. Elias has already made alot of good moves that won't register high on the Richter scale. I know the Orioles won't be big players in the FA market. But I'm excited to see what international moves he makes and how he assembles the 2020 squad and what personal touches of his own he puts on the franchise.

I like naming Holt as pitching director. I am very excited to see what is done this winter.

I doubt there will be anything to get excited about.

This will be Mike Elias first full offseason with the Orioles.  Just seeing how he approaches it will be interesting.
