All good stuff here.
A couple points/counter points:
In regards to Davis, if they want to get him back on track, they need to put him in situations where he can succeed and that's not against lefties. I think we all agree that Davis doesn't have a long leash this year, however I think that might be more of what we're HOPING for, not necessarily reality. But I think if Davis plays exclusively against righties, that's a good move no matter what the reasoning is. I do believe they want to get him back on track and a good strategy there is to not have him bite off more than he can chew. If that's the case, they need to feed him Gerber's.
In regards to Givens, remains to be seen if Hyde is going to manage to the save stat. Based on what he said earlier in ST, I don't think he will. What you might have seen today is Hyde keeping Givens on a short leash today because it's a long season and the bullpen is going to get a LOT of work. On the flip side, he very well might want to use him tomorrow but I wouldn't be surprised if Givens is brought in for a high leverage situation, not necessarily a save. If that's the case, I am in favor of a manager using his best/better relievers in high leverage situations, not just managing for the save.
In essence what you saw today, (I'm pissed that I missed the game) might have been Hyde playing the long game AND the short game with Givens. Playing for the long haul of a season where Givens will be taxed, also saving him for a rubber match game tomorrow. If that's the case, he played it perfectly.
Hyde finds himself in an interesting situation because, in a really weird way, he's playing with house money. There are *zero* expectations this year from a W/L perspective. So since there's no pressure to hit a win total or make a playoff run he can afford to get creative with things to see what might work. Let's be real here, no one expected the Orioles to win today so if his bullpen management backfired...so what?
I doubt Hyde sees it that way. He wants to win every game he can. He's not thinking about draft picks or experimenting at the cost of a win. He wants to build a winning culture.
I agree with your point. I just don't think Hyde would lol.

I wish Cruz would share his secret with Davis.

Texas will get another team. And Brooklyn or Connecticut.
No way does the darlings of MLB the Yankees and Red Sox allow that to happen. 0% chance. Texas isn't getting a 3rd team either.

I'll believe that when it happens. Both Tampa and Miami should lose teams before Baltimore would. Add Oakland and probably Pittsburgh to that list. That's 4 teams that should be considered for relocation before the Orioles. They aren't moving 4 teams in the next 30 years, much less by 2024.
And if the Orioles don't win a WS in the next 10-15 years, I'm not sure I'll even care if they do move by then.

Oakland (a team in the playoff hunt) has played 8 more hone games and have only drawn 40k more fans than the Orioles. The Indians have led the division all year and are 21st in attendance. Miami will barely each 1m fans. Those are all worse than the Orioles and their worst record in baseball attendance imo.

I think it poisons a team when someone gets playing time just because they are paid a large salary and their performance is awful. I'm sure that was one of many things that contributed to an awful clubhouse this year.
Or letting guys pick their positions to get more money as a FA. I don't get the Davis hate. The Orioles made the mistake...not Davis.

Guys like Trumbo aren't worth much in today's game. There will be five guys like him that are free agents that struggle to get deals. Heck, the very best version of him, J.D. Martinez, garnered little in the way of interest last year.
And he still got well over $100m. And everyone basically knew he was going to Bos.

True, but he has one year left. I would rather invest in Davis and hope a miracle happens than let Trumbo suck up at- bats for an awful team for no good reason.
If not for the knee surgery, Trumbo was a trade candidate I believe this winter. He was on pace for around 25 HR. A team looking to not invest a long-term contract for some pop at DH. A team like Oakland maybe.

He would have a $5 M/yr annuity for 22 years, be free to go to any team that would have him, and potentially make more money. If not he is a bench here warmer suffering humiliation for 4 years. Those are pretty strong motivations to me.
Making $92m to sit on a bench traveling the country with a MLB team...oh the humility.

Play hi until there is a legit prospect that he is in the way of. I would cut Trumbo first.
Trumbo atleast wasn't completely incompetent with the bat this year.

Why'd Gausman only go 5 with 80 pitches today?
Manager decided to PH for Gausman in an attempt to add more runs.

Didn't they do that with him at some point?
I know he changed his delivery to where he lifted his arms over hos head. I guess it's really not fair of me to judge Gausman. He has always been a second half pitcher anyhow.
-
Gausman is 3-1 with an ERA of 2. They have him pitching solely from the stretch I read. How come Orioles pitching coaches can't see these things?

Jones signs with the Padres for 2/18 with an option for a 3rd year.
Nick stays in Atlanta on a 3/36m deal

Let’s judge the deal based on five days. That’s a really sound way to judge a trade. Just look at how indicative Tim Beckham’s first five games were. Or first 30 games for that matter.
All I gave was an opinion of what I've seen so far. Is that not allowed? And Villar has had solid seasons before. Beckham isn't a good comparison. Have I ever kicked your dog? You seem to respond to me with alot of snark. Do you have an issue with me?

They think Schoop can play SS. Villar can’t. So it must have been for positional value and Schoop’s power potential. Plus Villar was banged up and Schoop was healthy.
So far so good for us. Way too early to evaluate the trade, but I think you can say the difference in the two players isn’t that much. Villar has more control, and we picked up two really nice prospects.
Range has never been Schoops strong suit. He definitely has the arm, but I don't see Schoop as even an average SS. But I see what your saying.
To me, Villar represents the start of getting away from that all or nothing approach at the plate and going more towards a more athletic take that extra base kind of offense.

I'm really wondering why the Brewers traded Villar. He looks like a much more exciting and polished hitter than Schoop. He brings way more to the table. Villar looks exactly like they type of player a playoff team wants. I didn't see much of Villar before he became an Oriole. Maybe being traded motivated him?

Eh. That's worst case. His 3B defense has improved so LF or 2B would likely be the ideal alternative if 3B doesn't work.
I'm hoping he can stick at 3B. OF is pretty full, especially if they get Mesa. He looks like he's going to be a premium bat, so they'll find room.

Extend?
Yes, if he shows he's a capable player. It's not like they have an up and coming 2B waiting in the wings.

I like this idea.. buy out 2 years of free agency? Offer 5/25ish. Is that in the ballpark?
That's probably in the range I would guess.

I can see Mountcastle moving to 1B.

Every team Nelson Cruz goes to, the hitters around him all of a sudden become power hitters. The bigger mystery is how he keeps passing those tests.
