Ugh ok…so no true savings.  There was no buyout, just a spreading out.  Still helps some but not really a big deal at the end.

I love having him off the 40-man roster and not wasting a spot there. Best thing to come out of this.

On the MLB pipeline podcast they basically confirmed that Grayson will be the #1 pitching prospect in baseball on their list after the re-rank

Get ready for the Orioles to have the consensus #1 hitting prospect and consensus #1 pitching prospect at the start of next season. Chances are it'll be the only time it ever happens for the O's, at least in most of our lifetimes.

Has it ever happened before for any team?

Front-of-the-sports-page article in today's Sun "Rutcshman stays put as others move up".

    By Meoli.

Matt Blood:  "This is his first full professional season in baseball.  We're still seeing growth occur where he is in his game.  I think once we feel like he's no longer benefiting from being in Bowie, then we'll move.  That's really what it's about - we see him still developing his consistency of his game in Bowie in a way that we think is more productive in Bowie at this point.  When that stops being the case, then we'll move him".

Meoli:  Rutschman's timeline seems deliberate for a reason.  He played at 3 levels in 2019 after he was drafted and was at the team's secondary camp at Bowie last summer working on his swing nad developing a rapport with some of the pitchers he'll work with once he reaches hte majors.  But this time at AA was meant to be his full -seaosn introduction to professional baseball.  He's played every game he's been available for Bowie, only missing two for the Future's Game".

All clearly BS. They just want an excuse to start him at AAA next season to manipulate his service clock. And if the new CBA changes service time manipulation, no big deal. They're freerolling on the chance at saving money.

The Orioles 2021 draft reminds me a lot of the mid 2010s Ray Farmer analytics led Cleveland Browns drafts.... lots of draft picks which had a lot of industry professionals scratching their heads. Hopefully Mike Elias is much more successful than Ray Farmer

Oh you mean the same Cleveland Browns that have now turned into a winning franchise?

    Great thread.

The number one message I take from this thread is that Elias believes that his job is in jeopardy if the O's don't start winning soon.  I have a lot of concerns about this draft, but the number one concern is that it screams shortsightedness.  Elias doesn't have the luxury of waiting 5 years for high school players to make it through the system.  He needs players who can contribute in a couple of years.

Dan Duquette was able to build a winning team for a short period of time here by putting the organization's resources into the major league club and neglecting long-term talent development.    I'm afraid this draft is a sign that we're going to see a similar approach in the next couple of years from Elias.

He's going to be waiting 5 years for the international scouting and development program (and the Dominican facility) to start regularly producing talent for the major league roster, though. So I don't have a major issue with him drafting players in one draft with a goal of moving them through the system quickly and hopefully having a few contribute at the major league level. And I say that as someone that much preferred drafting Lawlar to Cowser (and still wish we had).

  6. I think this draft clearly shows that Elias believes the major league window to compete is within 2 years. I also think he clearly has a philosophy that pitchers are risky, and it is more efficient to trade for them or eventually sign them in free agency. The last big takeaway for me is that he and his scouting staff put a premium on exit velocity for the hitters they target and draft when it comes to their analytical evaluations.

  7. Kevin Smith, Kyle Bradish, Michael Baumann, Bruce Zimmermann are all options for next season. None may pan out, and odds are that we'll be lucky if just one or two of that group can stick in the rotation. But next season should hopefully be a noticeable improvement with our SP candidates.

Smith gets another start today in AAA.  I'd like to see him go more than 5 innings - something he hasn't done this season, and he's only gone 5 innings once.  Is there a good reason he's got only 40 innings pitched this season?

It has to be due to the organization limiting innings for everyone after last year's shortened season.

  9. Jones should be up. We're losing games no matter what, let's take a look at what we may have for the future.

Leyba should also be up for the same reasons. Just use 2B and DH (plus LF for Jones) to get a look at both players.

I think Vavra will ultimately be the guy there. I think he's the best combination of offense and defense for the position. But let's see what Jones and Leyba can show now.

I don't disagree. Like I said, he will be gone soon. That said, also not (much) reason to get rid of him right now. Rutschman has had a handful of minor league ABs at this point plus do you want to start his service clock when we are going to lose 100 games?

Adley's advanced age for a top prospect makes that question irrelevant, in my opinion. It's more important to expose Adley to the majors and get him reps as soon as possible in order to better prepare him for when the team is actually ready to win.

So are they playing him at literally every position?  In my experience that usually means that the team doesnt really trust you at any position.

In this case, however, it more reflects the organization's emphasis on versatility with several of its minor leaguers (Vavra, Henderson, Westburg, others). Whether that's the right approach or not is another discussion, but I don't believe it's because the team doesn't trust him at a particular position.

Agreed. Gonsolin should, and probably will, get the first shot at that rotation spot.

I think we’ll end up trading Means, but not to LAD.

In other news: White Sox just lost Luis Robert for the year in addition to already being without Eloy Jimenez. I think they’ll call about Mancini and to a lesser degree Santander. But Mancini seems like an extremely logical target for them.  I don’t think their farm is that great right now. Would you trade Trey for Dylan Cease and a minor leaguer?

Depends on the minor leaguer, but I personally wouldn't want the O's to get Cease. I'd like to see us go after Matthew Thompson and/or Bryan Ramos.

They can just put David Price in the rotation.

Or even better yet (for them), Gonsolin. Gonsolin should beat Price back from injury, and he's likely the superior pitcher anyway.

Plutko's history as a starter in not that good.   If there is an injury I think Lowther is next man up.

Hope to see Lowther soon, whether it's due to injury or Lopez/Harvey/Kremer/Zimmermann being ineffective.
