Just one man's opinion, but I think that's overblown .... magically, I guess, the perception of horrible stadium-area crime stops on those days when those huge crowds come in for Paul McCartney and the Ravens.

    Risk vs. reward

Seeing a Beatle vs. one of 81 baseball games.

When I go I come in off I-95 onto Key Highway and come towards the stadiums from the Locust Point side.  No need to deal with downtown except being in the park.

All I know is I heard an Oriole broadcaster mention Tottenham Hotspur, which is something I never thought I be able to say. #COYS

I don't care what @Moose Milligan says, he's going to love-hate this post and probably only mentioned soccer to spin me up.  But I get up at 7am and fire up the Spurs match or the TSV 1860 Munich match and it's awesome.  Just to annoy him I might post three paragraphs on Jimmy Greaves, Glenn Hoddle and Danny Blanchflower.

The in-stadium experience is as good as any sport, the athleticism is great, the strategy is layered and nuanced.  Just like baseball outsiders think nothing is going on, but everything is going on, everyone on the field has to intuitively know what their role in the system is. And once you've watched a good game that has 45 minutes without a commercial break you'll find it hard to go back to other sports.  American football is jarring... flip over on TV... I thought Maryland was on, oh that's right, they are, there's just a thee-minute commercial every four minutes.  If you turn to soccer you know what's on? Soccer. Weird, right?

"Layered and nuanced"  This is why I hate soccer.

  3. The Orioles should be putting an absolute premium on left handed hitters in the lineup from now on.  Play to your home park a little.

I don't post much but I've stated that I love the new wall.  All these jacked up hitters for years hitting flyballs that had no business being HR's.  I'd rather see more balls in play.  Want a HR?  Earn it.

Initial reaction isn't great, but we got 4 arms for a guy who we, IIRC, picked up off waivers and rehabilitated into a good (not amazing) closer.

I think the role of a closer is a bit overrated and I don't think Lopez was an elite one.  Also, it's not as if we don't have a guy (Bautista) who looks like he could step in and actually be elite.

Lopez was looking amazing and he had a few hiccups right before the All-Star Break and he's blown a save after the break, too.  I think we sold high on him.  That said, for his sake I'd like to be wrong and I hope he has continued success in Minnesota because he seems like a good dude.

As far as the return we got, like I said...4 arms for a guy that, 6 months ago, no one thought anything of.  And all of a sudden people are acting like we traded prime Eckersley for spare parts.

We have to see how Lopez does in his new digs and we have to see if any of the arms we got today turn into valuable pieces.  This isn't one of those trades you can jump to conclusions on, despite the fact that that's exactly what sports message boards are for.

I like the way you think Moose.

Not everyone in here is in love with the return on this trade but I feel like the consensus is we definitely got back more than “lottery tickets”

I'm calling them lottery tickets but you're right, probably a bit more that that.  4 pitchers with some promise for a guy who routinely had an ERA over 5 or 6.

What has Zach Britton done since being shipped away?

    Ok with the deal.

The Mancini one hurt a little but I understood it as well.

Ok, just getting caught up on this thanks to being in meetings this morning.

My take: Povich is the headliner and although I have not gone and watched him yet (I'll do that tonight) all reports is that he's adding velocity and becoming a guy. A three pitch lefty with a good change can be an effective 4th/5th starter and if his velocity continues to tick up or the Orioles are able to get more out of his change, we have ourselves a future rotation piece.

Cano is a Cuban so he's a little old but he was dominating AAA with his 95 MPH sinker, slider , changeup combo. I need go watch him but looking quickly at his baseball savant numbers he looks like a guy who misses bats with his slider and changeup but throws his sinker way too much in the middle of the plate. Cano may need to iron some things out, but he has plus movement on his changeup and horizontal movement on the slider. If he can command the sinker better he could very well be another arm in the pen.

Rojas is a short-lefthander who appears to have plus command and good K numbers while Nunez looks like a short-righthander who could be a late bloomer with crazy K numbers.

Overall, no huge prospect, but four guys with promise for Lopez.

Now, I like Lopez as a reliever and I know the Orioles would have had him for wo more seasons. But if there is one thing the Orioles have a lot of is right-hander relievers.

Bautista clearly becomes the closer, Tate fills his role with Krehbiel picking up some of Tate's roles.

This opens a spot, hopefully permanently for Vespi to be another left-handed reliever besides Perez.

So what I see if Elias adding needed pitching depth to the organization for a reliever that we have the "horses" to cover down on.

I need to go watch Povich video tonight, but if I has the potential to be a middle of the rotation guy or even a 4th guy, that's worth 2 years of Lopez in my mind and when you add in the other potential, I can't be too upset at this trade.

Pretty much agree in general.  Let us know when you get a look at Povich and the other guys.

  7. To me no news is good news on the trade front.  Let this play out since almost none of "our guys" will fetch much of a return.  If anyone I'd move Lopez.

Buy a SP in the offseason.  Spend the money.

And Ubaldo was one of the reasons the Birds claimed that WC spot in 2016. He pitched pretty well in the second half, and went 3-1 in September during our playoff push. He had his moments with the O's... but they were definitely outshone by his overall disappointing performance here.

No one knew at the time how the Ubaldo signing would turn out.  It didn't work mostly.  By all accounts he was a good guy and a good teammate from everything I read.  Sometimes things don't go as expected.

I'm wondering if you know what AAAA means...

That said, anyone who could reasonably fit that term was almost assuredly a part of a major event at OPACY.

Too good for AAA not quite good enough for MLB roster.  Played organized baseball from 1977 until 2018.  Yes I am old.  Thanks for the patronizing comment though.  🙂
