  1. I wish I had any valid thoughts on what to do here.  I've got no proof or anything.

If it were up to me, I would send him down.  Just doesn't seem ready to me.  I get needing to transition and get work in at the big league level, but I worry about having too much failure at this level.  I think he needs to take what he has learned and apply it at AAA.  Do it for a while and get better.

Do I think this is the best path, I have no idea.

its not 1995. You cant afford to waste a roster spot on a guy this unathletic. Unless hes prime Jim Thome with the bat. Just DFA him. Reminds me so much of the time and at bats wasted with Jesus Aguilar (and Brett Phillips) in 2022. Call up Mayo, let him struggle as DH.

    Prime Thome was sick

  3. Can someone please explain to me why our best hitters can’t hit anymore.  Seriously.  Snarky comments welcome, but I really want to understand wtf happened.

I think Cust would have made it to third there.

Poor effort and hesitation aside, Eloy looks like a 53 year old man running out there.

Didn’t Cust eat it rounding third?

I was going to say I agree but in 2025 but then I realize no Burns, no Bradish  possibly no Santander. That playoff window is going to start getting tighter and tighter.

Fair, but you would hope we see some sort of improvement or solid play from Cowser, Holliday, Mayo, Basallo, Gunnar, Adley, Westburg, Kjerstad, Grayson, etc

And the reality is the struggles are happening because our best players are sucking. Burnes, Henderson, Kimbrel and Adley haven’t been good..Santander had a rough August outside of some homers.

When your elite and best players struggle, you are going to struggle to win.

To me, this is it.  Sure we can complain about a little of this and that, but at the end of the day, the best players on this team are not playing well.  They all have a history of playing well to some extent, but aren't now.  If these guys were just playing a bit better, we probably have 5-7 more wins over the last two months and the team doesn't feel so bad.  Does Elias control these guys, maybe indirectly with the coaching staff and approach, but I dont understand why they played well and then fell off.  Not sure I can blame Elias very much for that.

The injuries to pitchers feels so rampant that I worry our pitching lab (or whatever) approach is contributing to it.

I think this is excessive and I don't blame Elias, but I also hope the adjustments or optimizations we're asking pitchers to make isn't introducing mechanics that lead to injury.

I definitely think there is a possibility that our pitching lab is contributing to it.  The focus on spin rates especially.

I would hate to be the guy that had to tell McCann they were sending him to the IL.

It was easy with Chris Davis because he was so demoralized. I don’t think you could get away with sending Adley or Burnes to the IL for minor discomfort. Burnes looks like the kind of guy that would fight you if you tried for something minor. Not only is he vying for a big payday after this season but he seems ultra competitive.
The best you could do, in my opinion, is give Adley a day off before an off day and ask Burnes if he would like to get an extra days rest in between starts to stay fresh down the stretch. I wouldn’t ask him until he redeems himself because I would imagine he is chomping at the bit to get back out there and do better.
I don’t know, that was one big long ramble but all we can do is pontificate because we don’t have all of the information and aren’t in the thick of the discussions being had between players and staff.

    Fair points.

Does anyone know if Brunes has had any sort of Velo dip recently?  If no velo dip, than an IL stint makes little sense.

Burnes biggest problem is he knows the offense is trash and he can't afford any mistakes which makes him have to pitch too scared. I don't care how much of an ace he is he's human. That said, I am having second thoughts about DR paying him $350 million dollars this off season to keep him.

As for Adley, he definitely needs a 10 IL stint. I think his fall off a cliff and Westburg being out are the 2 biggest things impacting this offense.

Yeah very fair.  Adley and Westburg's situations have definitely had bad consequences.  It interesting to see the debate on who or what is to blame for the teams performance over the past few months.  To me, its starting pitching injuries, poor bullpen play, Adley, Westburg, homer happy/poor situation hitting offense style, defense (especially a few weeks ago).   Just finding a way to turn Adley around and getting Wesburg healthy could go a long way.  Add Grayson and Eflin and maybe this board would get some optimism back.

  10. Yeah, on the Adley front, I think the lower back tweak should be enough to allow a short DL stint.  I'm just not sure the benefit of fighting through a minor injury, only to plany really poorly.  I would rather him heal up/rest up and come out fresher for the last 20 games of the year.  He's just not providing much benefit to the team right now.  Exit velocities seem awful.

Understood on the Burnes front.  I'm not knowledgeable enough to understand why he's had his brief fade, whether it be tired, working things out, bad luck, adjustments needed etc.  Thanks for the thoughts.

  11. This could be a very dumb idea, just wanted to throw it out there.  Thoughts appreciated.

Does Burnes' arm need a little rest?

Does Adley's body, back etc need a little rest?

Would it be best to sit them out during late august and have them come back fresh in early September.  I don't know what it is, but it does not feel good to have two of your best players fading hard here.  Again, could be a bad idea, just seems like they could use some rest to get a little fresher.

He looks like more out of shape than usual. Wonder if he has injuries that have hurt his training?

We will probably hear about some stuff after the season.

    Agreed SG.

The one thing I will say about Basallo is that Adley was a can't-miss offensive and defensive catcher, and tore up the minor leagues. If people think Basallo is going to catch and somehow out-hit Adley in the MLs, they are delusional.

I would prefer they move Basallo off C now and preserve his ability to hit.

This is something that is very very fair.  To be honest, I haven't considered this, but it is dead on.  Same for Wieters, right?  You see these guys are great hitters in the minors, but it is very hard to guarantee that it translates in the pros.

Wieters last posted an OPS+ over 100 (101) in his age 29 season.  So its not like catchers always have the longest prime either.

  14. I think everyone is a bit disturbed by the last 6 weeks of play and the injuries, but this is a pretty decent team.  Lets get to the tournament and hope for a little luck.  Everyone else is dealing with the same.  The defense can get better and that should settle things down.  Looking forward to some minor improvements.
