Honestly, if I could pick one area I think there's a good chance I'm wrong, it's the Odor/Martin thing. To me it makes so much sense having a guy like Richie on the bench, especially since he's been hitting. But I could see the O's trying out Odor for a few weeks to see if there's anything there. It really messes with being able to play Urias and Mateo at their best positions though, because it means one of them has to play 3B. And with Gutierrez and Owings playing well, Odor just doesn't make much sense to me.

But I won't be surprised if Odor is on the team to start. Unlike a minor league signing, releasing Odor is flushing the ML minimum down the drain.

Just a gut feeling, but wouldn't be at all surprised to see the O' release Odor in the next few days.  He's just not showing me anything positive in Spring Training.

Why on earth wouldnt the O's agree to put in an opt out. I'd happily let him walk in 3 years just for the chance of getting his prime years. He's only going downhill after 30.

Exactly!  I realize the O's probably aren't gonna get him but hope springs Eternal this time of year.

BTW, if you have an interest in Sir Paul's music, I highly recommend seeing him perform at least once. It's a great show and, at least for those of us of a certain age, a unique atmosphere. (And there are lots of fans there in their teens, 20's and 30's, singing along.)

Agreed.  Saw him in 2013 during his "Out There" tour.  Dude just enjoys performing.  Puts on a very enjoyable show.

Making a demand that overturns the 50 year status quo, and then walking back from that demand, isn't much of a concession.

50 years status quo?  Even more reason to update the process.

  5. Negotiations are a "give and take" situation.  I thus far have seen only the MLBPA make any significant "give" in these negotiations.  The union has reportedly abandoned its proposal on getting players a quicker path to free agency.  I had perceived this particular issue as being one of the main "sticking points" on the way to a new CBA.  I realize there are other major issues to be worked out.  Just wanted to make that point.

Weren’t players getting more money?  Did you see the contracts being handed out?

Yep, I saw them.  Free agents are gonna get their money.  MLBPA wants more opportunities for "younger" players to make big bucks.  As an example,  how much is John Means worth right now on the open market?  I'll guess some MLB team would pay him right now 3 years/27 million dollars.  Under the current arbitration system Means is projected to make 3.1 million for the 2022 season.  Some form of earlier "restricted" free agency is needed.

  7. Well, as long as this thread has gone totally off the rails then here's my two cents.  Baseball is sorta unique in that some players are signed at age 16 and others at 21 or 22.  I perceive that eligibility for free agency is turning out to be the 800 pound gorilla in the room in any proposed new CBA.  Why not just do away with the Arbitration process altogether.  After 3 years service time a player becomes a "restricted" free agent (sorta like the NBA and NFL).  The player's team has the right to match any other teams offer for that player.  It seems to have worked well in other sports.

Well I strongly feel that if he’s allowed to flip the switch we could contend next year. And without spending a billion dollars either.

As a fan, I would feel sorry for Mullins, Means, Mountcastle, Hays, etc. knowing they are looking at another 100+ loss season.  For heavens sake get these guys at least a little bit of help and hope.

I think they could get a top 100 guy for him.  That’s certainly possible, which is why I don’t think some of the names mentioned here are off base.

    I just wouldn’t pay that.

The MLB Trade Rumours article mentions that the Reds are probably looking for a return package similar to what they got for Jose Berrios.  Two top 100 MLB prospects from the Blue Jays.

I’m not trying to be rude but if you think that’s the type of package it would take to get Castillo then why entertain the notion at all? For two years of an okay to decent starter at the tail end of a rebuild it would be crazy to trade a package of some of your best prospects.

I'm not advocating such a trade.  Just throwing it out there as what it would probably take to just get the Reds attention.

Absolutely should be looking into him but at what cost?  I can’t see dealing any of the top 9 guys in our system for  him but I could see dealing a few guys outside the top 10.

No chance Reds would go for that kinda deal.  I'm thinking it would take D.L Hall and another top 10 prospect to at least grab their attention.
