But I’d still never insult the guy by calling him unathletic.

Making an observation that Stewart is clumsy, poorly coordinated and out of control in the outfield should not be conflated to being an "insult."

Want an example of of insult?

    "Olberman is a douche."

Recognize that? That's an example of an insult, not an observation.

Or a poster who continuously insults others on here, such as, "So yea, you are really arent that bright." I don't see you calling out certain posters who use ad hominems repeatedly against people who participate on this site.

Obviously, reactions and offense taken all depend on who the speaker is here.

Paul Fry is warming to come Into the bottoms of the 8th in a game we’re losing 4-2. Man, he’s really key to us being competitive.

Always sell high on relievers for options that can be SP or everyday position players. Wait too long, and even the one of the greatest relievers of this century brings back Josh Rodgers, Dillon Tate, Cody Carroll, and Breyvic Valera. SMH.

Sell Sky High on Fry now.

Valera was part of the Machado trade, not the Britton trade,

It’s comical...I mean, I don’t think Wieters was a great athlete in many ways and I think it held him back some.

Wieters was cat-like in his defense behind the plate. He wasn't a very fast runner, but he was tremendously athletic.

I think you're confusing un-athletic with lack of grace.

DJ Stewart is very athletic.  He doesn't always look great, but that doesn't mean he's un-athletic.

Then I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Wouldn't be the first time we disagree. But since you described Stewart as "ungraceful," or in your exact phrasing, Stewrt "lack(s) grace," we actually agree, I would say.

    Synonyms
Ungraceful: awkward, clumsy, graceless, stiff, wooden, gawky
Unathletic: awkward, clumsy, gawky, graceless, klutzy, lumbering, ungraceful

    Source: Merriam Webster Dictionary

These two words are nearly identical in meaning.

Stewart's "lack of grace" stands out like a sore thumb compared to the average player. He is poor in spatial awareness and he is poorly coordinated. I understand people dislike when someone says something negative about their idols but Stewart plays the field like he is doing a Dizzy Bat Race.

Like Gerry Sandusky described Kyle Boller to be unathletic, so is Stewart. You can throw a football 60 yards from your knees and still be unathletic if you have two left feet and trip over yourself, like Boller did and Stewart does. Having a few gifts does not make one "athletic" or "coordinated."

I am not confusing anything. I am also not playing semantic games.

And if he lets it fall he faces the scorn of OH posters who call him unathletic.

Stewart is unathletic whether he catches it or whether he flops around like a fish on a dock.

Yeah, I saw it too.   Franco took a little too long to get rid of the ball and then Mancini got the ball stuck in his glove.

On the other play, Stewart fielded a ground single in RF and made kind of a lazy tentative throw into 2B while a runner was sliding into 3B.   Urias mishandled the hop and the runner decided to take off for home.   Urias picked the ball up and threw a one hopper to Severino, who didn’t handle it.  Poor play by Stewart, Urias and Severino.

Later in the game, Murphy challenged Mullins arm by trying to go 1st to 3rd on a single in shallow LCF.   Mullins charged the ball aggressively and threw Murphy out.

Can somebody please help Trey pick out a mitt that works properly?

Was the Stewart catch great or reckless?   The O's were up  by 5.   The ball was foul.  Is he really worth it to get hurt  at that point in the game?  He was very lucky to just be sore after hitting the bullpen roof with his head.

Stewart is a horrible judge of flyballs. As a result, he slowly ran toward the foul pop because he couldn't judge where he needed to be. A good outfielder gets to the spot quicker, at more of a full run, and is waiting for the ball. Instead, Stewart was still half-running towards a popup he should have been under and injured himself. It's not a great play nor is it reckless. It's a typical play by a bad outfielder who can't judge fly balls and could have injured himself worse because of his defensive inability.

Well, he’s in the lineup today, though I was expecting they’d bring up McKenna, especially because Stewart has been scuffling.

But that’s on Hyde, as is a lot of stuff.

I am glad he wasn't hurt.

But as a trainer, you go check on a player no matter what. You don't abdicate your professional responsibility just because a player waves you off.

Did he really wave off the trainers? I did not watch the game but appears from the highlight that was the case. I am OK with them leaving him in the game if he is checked out and has no symptoms but that should be the trainers decision, not the player's.

He looked woozy after the impact. And he has a concussion history.

    Cesar Valdez anyone?

I was thinking about him being traded at the deadline during last night's game. I can't imagine what a re-tread like him would bring back. But if Valdez brought back something of value, it would be like alchemy; the trade would be a coup!

I have the Cub/Brave game on TV#2 and they just put up a graphic of Tim Kurkjian's 5 best Jr's ever, in no particular order:

    Jackie Bradley Jr

    Cal Ripken Jr

    Ronald Acuna Jr

    Ken Griffey Jr

    Fernando Tatis Jr

Is there any way we can get JBJr off there?  Has to be a better choice, doesn't there?

Tony Gwynn Jr doesn't make the cut.  Any other ideas?

Looks like there have been four great Juniors.

The knock on Mullins was that he was a good defender with a week arm, but he couldn’t hit very well.

    I’m not sure that’s true…

Here is Luke Siler's take on Cedric Mullins from November 2017. His comment about switch hitting was prescient.

    Quote

    Scouting report (now and future)

    Hit: 45/50

    Power: 50/55

    Speed: 60/60

    Field: 55/60

    Arm: 45/45

What we know: Mullins packs some pop into a small frame.  He’s a switch-hitter but he does his best work from the left side where his quick, compact swing shows power to all fields.  His right-handed swing is a bit longer due to a late load and doesn’t generate the same easy power.  He has a patient approach at times but struggles with pitch recognition and was often caught in between during his late season slump.  He’s the best defensive outfielder in the system including the major league team.  He combines plus speed, a quick first step, good route running, and the innate ability to jump/drive for the ball.  His arm is slightly below average, but good enough for CF or LF. He has been a good baserunner in the past, but he looked very uncomfortable trying to steal bases this season, I assume it had something to do with the hamstring injuries he dealt with.

What we don't know: Will he be able to hit well enough right-handed to avoid a platoon role?  Will he improve his pitch recognition and stop getting himself out?  Will the hamstring issues continue to plague him?

What he needs to improve: He needs to figure out his right-handed swing or stop switch hitting.  He’s pretty much MLB-ready defensively.  All he needs at the plate is more time, he made the huge jump from low A to AA and did extremely well until his late season slump.  I think he’ll continue to refine his strike zone and pitch recognition with more ABs.

Summary: Mullins was pushed aggressively in 2017 and didn’t disappoint. He’s a true centerfielder and will hit for plenty of power to profile as a regular there if he can adjust to advanced pitching.  Right now, he struggles when pitchers sequence pitches well, but that’s to be expected of a guy with only 350 PA above low A.  I like his chances to adapt and I think he’ll at least be a good hitter in the better part of a platoon.  His ability to play CF well gives him both a MLB floor and the ceiling of an all-star.
